I visited my old hangout when I was in college. The price seem to went up. I got the sweet sour shrimp with fry rice. It look real good when the food arrive at my table. I’m not sure whether it is my taste bud. The vegetable carrot seem to taste old. Everything else taste ok. The mixer of hot chili seem to make it taste good. The crowd seem less. When i was in college It was busy. Maybe because all the new restaurants surrounded them.

When I was going to UofH, I like to come here to eat for lunch or dinner. The special stir fry noodle is so delicious. The price is not bad. I love all the dishes I tried so far.

General tso was crap. They nickle and dime with everything and charge for refills. Typical cheap asian restaurant. Go to café 101 next door

Whoever gives this place a good review is not human. I guess the only reason they’re still open is because they’re cheap and located on a college campus.

I ordered some food to go here and was pretty dissapointed. Although it was cheap and can be a great deal for a college student, to me it wasn’t worth it. I got the wonton soup and the chicken lo mein. The wonton soup was just not good. The broth tasted off and the wontons were meh. The portion size for my lo mein was huge, but again the food was just subpar. I felt a little sick after eating it. The outside of the restaurant smells terrible and the inside is pretty sad looking. All in all, I would pass on China Star. Maybe I’ll give it another try in a few months.

Owner is very rude and does not like to smile at her customers. Horrible customer service and the restaurant definitely needs to be renovated. Looks gross! Food is okay.

Chinese Star has really good food! The owner is this cute little lady and she’s so nice! You definitely get a lot of food for such a low price, I highly recommend it to the broke student that is craving good, quality food.

Both my wallet and tummy are very satisfied. You cannot beat the prices here considering how much they give you. The general Tsos chicken is actually better than most asian restaurants I go to that charge double he price. Beef and broccoli was delicious and the egg roll was tasty.

Keeping in mind the mentality, you get what you pay for this restaurant works. The cheap prices come with a catch, that being you are not going to get quality gourmet food. You are going to get the oily, suspicious looking piece of meat that may or may not make you sick afterwards. Goodness knows what goes on in the back of that kitchen. Whatever it is, l still find myself going back here on sporadic occasions. It satisfies that need for a good, heaping dosage of artery clogging Chinese food.

The food is terrible and they continuously have a number of egregious food safety violations. The food always tastes old, like it has been left out for a long time. Overall really not good.

Chinese Star is a staple for all broke students who had, have, and will attend the University of Houston. At one point or another, if you ever call yourself a Cougar you will end up here at least once, but possibly a lot more than just once. It used to be located in a smaller place, now it’s taken over what used to be Pizza Hut buffet(yes, you youngins! You didn’t know that place used to be Pizza Hut, did you?!) with more parking space. The owner of the restaurant today is still the same owner from almost 20 years ago. And although I hadn’t been back here in forever. She still remembered me and my sister(who was also a Cougar). Considering that here have been tens of thousands of students who had come and gone after I graduated UH, that’s kind of impressive(Or, I’d just been here way more times than I care to admit!) Now they have WIFi. Now they accept cougar cash(or whatever their on-campus form of payment is called.) I’ve seen people come here for a cheap first date or to grab a quick lunch. I’ve tried many things on the menu from the chicken wings, lo mein, fried rice, chicken and shrimp, soup, and whatever you can think of — they’re consistently greasy and yummy. If you’re a student at the University of Houston, go ahead and visit this restaurant. You will, eventually, anyway. Thank you Chinese Star for helping me through my years at the University of Houston. GOCOOGS!

I have been here several times through the semester, frankly the food is not that good. The food is exceptionally oily and because of it it loses a lot of the flavor. Majority of what you taste is the oil. The vegetables are crisp and a little under salted, which is great, but when you find beef in your vegetarian order you start to wonder. The restaurant itself is incredibly dark, and the tables are falling apart. The biggest selling point for it is that they take cougar cash.

Amazing… I live in tomball Texas and drive here just to eat their general chicken… mouth watering goodness… like being in heaven. I graduated back in 99 and still today I crave the general chicken. Must try for yourself!!! Let me be more specific on my review instead of saying how great the food is. The chicken is coded with flour badder and deep fried to a crisp, then the sauce is added and tossed. with dried pepper flakes, along with garlic and onions and some sauce. I’m not absolutely sure but part of that sauce has to include ketchup. It had a very small hint of tang to it and I think it’s due to the tomato paste. I could be wrong. I get mine extra spicy and with extra onions. I should have asked the owner today when I was talking with her about Unilocal app. She didn’t know about customer reviews but I’m sure she’ll read them now.

I tried this restaurant because I was jonesing for chinese food and didn’t want to go far, it’s located close to my work. I ordered the chicken and cashews with hot and sour soup to go for lunch. It was ready in 15 minutes, the pick up was fast and friendly, and I was in and out. The restaurant itself is very basic and I heard bad things about the cleanliness but I have yet to actually eat inside. The food was great, a little greasy but the portion was big. The hot and sour soup was decent. All in all it was an ok meal, I’ll try different places first before going back. Lunch menu is too limited for my taste.

You’ll find this place right across from Calhoun lofts with its own parking lot, and inside you’ll find the nice asian lady at the counter who’s seen my face more than enough times. First of all this restaurant has a «home-like» atmosphere to it, something that café 101 down the street doesn’t have. Not gonna lie, it may look a little dirty(that’s cause it is, just a little) but the food is not too bad at all. Well it depends on what you order. I’ve tried quite a few things but I’ve decided that the shrimp and chicken is my go-to dish. The food here is pretty greasy and I can taste the msg in the meat, but honestly that’s what makes it Chinese star. It has that«unhealthy but delicious» taste to it. A lot of people will tell you that this food isn’t that good and makes them sick, but I just them to grow stronger stomachs. I’ve never gotten sick eating here, but then again I usually get the same thing every time. Oh and they also have $ 7 pitchers — you can’t go wrong with that.

I can’t believe they’re still around(which is a good thing)! Still the same menu, almost the same prices…15 years since I graduated. Get the chicken & shrimp combo if you happen to come across this little gem.

The price is cheap and food comes with huge portion. It tastes very nice and the place is clean as well. I tried General Tso’s Chicken with fried rice and it is way very delicious. This place is absolutely better than Kim Son Restaurant at UC Satellite near there, which also sell Chinese/Vietnamese food.

Chinese star has been a staple of my diet for the entirety of my college career here at UH. The chinese star lady is there every day and treats my friends and I like family. Food is good for a cheap Chinese food meal. *you can use cougar cash *7 $ pitchers is the cheapest beer on campus *chicken and broccoli and the c16 are the best

If you’re a UH student then you have to try Chinese Star(aka China Star) at least once. It’s not authentic Chinese food but that’s what makes it so good!(and way better than Panda Express and those other mall stalls) This place has been serving hungry Coogs since 1990, and 21 years later you can still see long lines forming during lunch hour. Many students come here for their lunch special which consist of Kung Pao Chicken, Beef and Broccoli, Fried Rice, and Egg Roll all for $ 5.95. It’s not a bad deal for all that food, though, too greasy for my liking. I always come here for their«spicy» General Tso’s Chicken with fried rice. For $ 7.45 you get a large plate of them that is enough for two people. Just order an extra bowl of fried rice for a dollar and the total will come out under $ 10 bucks. The Orange Chicken here is also good if you aren’t a fan of General Tso.
