Sideshow was written by the team that created Dreamgirls. I saw it on Broadway ten years ago three times before it closed. It lasted only 90 performances. .. Sadly, people on vacation from Iowa don’t pay $ 100 a ticket to see a musical about circus freaks. Though I have seen dozens of musicals on and off Broadway, Sideshow has remained my favorite. It is a tear jerker full of darkness and nobility. .. the true story of Daisy and Violet Hilton, conjoined twins who made it from the freak show to vaudeville to Hollywood and the movies, unfortunately in Todd Browning’s ‘Freaks.’ Imagine my wonderous surprise at how terriffic the current(and rare) performace at the Lyceum is. The Hart sisters play Daisy and Violet to a tee and there are standouts in the supporting cast too: Jake, Terry, Buddy. .. and the Master. There are only a handfull of performances until the end of November. I urge you to go see this thing. I started sniveling in my seat half way through the first act and was positively soggy by curtain call. I’m sure you’ll have a similar experience.
