The experience we had at Soul was both good and bad. Good in that they play smooth, funky tunes while you eat along with some Soul Train episodes. Bad in that the food was quite disappointing. We were expecting some perfectly cooked soul food, but instead we got fusion soul food that was over-spiced. Chef Sean’s spin on soul food with island influences is fine. The over-spiced food is not. I don’t know if this matters, but I will mention the fact that Sean was not there when we were dining, so perhaps the blame can fall on the other chef, however there should be some sort of quality control in the kitchen. I ordered the Feta Mac ‘n Cheese and some of their famous cornbread as a side for both of us. The bf ordered the Jambalaya. The mac ‘n cheese was over-spiced with salt and garlic. Now some of you may be thinking, «How can you ever have too much garlic?» because I know I’ve thought that before, but trust me; you can definitely have too much garlic when it comes to this dish. Even though I disliked the over-powering taste of this dish, I ate as much as I could stand because I was hungry. The bf disliked his jambalaya. I can’t say as to why since I didn’t try it, but I was bummed out that he barely ate any. The cornbread that everyone raves about was also a huge disappointment. When it comes to great cornbread the flavor has to be slightly sweet, and the bread nice and moist. The moisture was there, but the sweetness was ridiculously overdone with some sort of honey butter drizzle on top. Even though we could see where the chef had drizzled the drizzle(that should be a name of a rap group) the rest of the bread tasted as if it had been soaking in honey butter. Such a turnoff. My bf and I absolutely LOVE cornbread, and we both gave each other that look of, «You don’t want to finish it either, huh?» That’s just sad. Unilocal 365#-038/365

I was having a craving for some Soul, so hubby drove all the way from Ahuimanu to Kaimuki to get some for me! I was so sad to hear that today was there last day open at the restaurant. (Soul Patrol will still be at it’s same locations) He ordered his favorite Fried Chicken & biscuits and Gravy, and I had the Mac N Feta Cheese w/Collard Greens(although, I was yearning the sweet potato pancakes) so I ordered a side of Cornbread. I hurried, and set the table with Fine Chinet and silverware, and a few brewskis on ice, patiently awaiting his arrival with my Soulful take-out. It plated like perfection, plentiful and filled us up to where we felt like stuffed Oompa Loompas… as comfort food does. I still had my piece of Cornbread, thinking I’ll have just one bite, and save the rest for later… OMG, the first bite was like smooth honey butter, it was truly the best CB I’ve ever had! Unfornately I got lost in the moment, and had only one bite left for hubby ;0 Sean Priester,(formerly Executive Chef of Top of Waikiki) and the owner and Master Soul Chef’s creations will still be served on Thursdays at Kailua Farmer’s Market, and other FMs on the island. If you happen to run into the Soul Patrol, check-in and take a ride on the Soul Train, you will not be disappointed, and tell him MINI Mary sent ya!

Sad, sad, sad… Heard last night that the restaurant is closing this week. Soul Patrol will be the only way to get Chef Sean’s soul food until he possibly opens a new locale maybe in downtown sometime around September.(This is how he consoled me and the group of fans that stood there with sad-dog eyes, holding our plates of food). Great fan of the veggie chili(and I am NOT a vegetarian) and collard beans. Bf loves the chicken and cornbread. Couldn’t quite afford the shrimp n grits like I wanted to last night, but that is my favorite!

I was very excited to try the food at Soul. It was the fried chicken and waffles man. Who doesn’t love chicken and waffles? Well, I’ve had them in various places around the mainland from Roscoes to Sylvia’s(that’s across the continent, ya’ll) so I think it’s fair to say that this isn’t my first time. Anywho. I wish it tasted the way it smelled. It smelled sweet and buttery and cinnamon-ee but it didn’t quite taste like that. The waffles were great(hot). I just wish I got more syrup. I wanted to love the fried chicken but I just couldn’t. They were just too salty. I could only eat one of the two thighs that were on the plate. Sorry. I really REALLY wanted to love the food. Maybe I’ll try the collards and corn bread next time.

Update 4⁄15: This used to be my happy Southern food place. Recently, the quality isn’t quite up to par. It seems Chef Sean is stretching himself thin. His prep cooks are not properly trained in seasoning. The food lacks flavor. He is cutting costs at the expense of quality and attention to detail. Soul is just plain sloppy. I’ve ate at Soul many times, so I notice the difference in taste and quality. Heck, I remember when Soul first showed up at the Blaisedell Farmer’s Market back when it was just 6 vendors and he was sampling his black eyed pea chili to anyone that would walk by. I became a fan. FASTFORWARDTOTHEPRESENTDAY //// This isn’t based on just two events — these are the two recent events that broke the camel’s back. //// Event 1 — Brunch: Excited, ordered crabcake benedict, chorizo huevos rancheros & seafood gumbo. UNDERWHELMING. MUDDLED. FLAT. Not even a savory or seasoned(salt and spices) component. Left horribly disappointed but naively loyal. — — - Event 2 — Blaisedell Farmer’s Market 4⁄11: Chef Sean was there cooking mac n cheese. I had hope. Fail. The food was put on a paper plate with no separators, so the cole slaw liquid mixed with the bean chili liquid and made the bottom of the fried chicken squishy. His famous bean chili lacked flavor and tasted more like can tomato. The cole slaw was cut too thick and long. The flavor of it was moot. His famous fried chicken lost the honey sweet sauce he used to put on top. It was just regular fried chicken. Corn bread way too much salt and butter. The whole plate failed. My sister and I couldn’t even eat half of it. We threw it away. THEEND.

I came here with my friend a few weeks ago because we wanted to try it. Initially, when my friend and I drove by, the parking lot was full, so we went elsewhere. So, my friend was wondering about this place, and we found a parking spot because it was kind of empty at 1:45 p.m. The place is quite small. Rocky asphalt, a bit of outdoor seating, and a little more indoor seating. Décor inside is a very… homey feeling. I like it a lot. Especially with the green circle in the middle of our table. There is also television that plays an endless amount of Soul Train. Brings me back… Groovy. There was one waitress at the time, and she was welcoming. Friend and I decided on what we wanted quickly. I ordered the Fried Chicken and Waffle while my friend ordered the Jambalaya. We waited about. 10 minutes or so for our food to come, and when it did, we were excited. Fried Chicken and Waffle– Two fried chicken and one fat(horizontal) waffle. Chicken was hot and I absolutely love crunchy chicken skin. Mmm. The downside of this plate though, the chicken was very salty… More salt than I anticipated. Sadly, there was not enough waffles to combat the salt, and resorted to water. The waffle was warm and delicious though. Downside, the honey was already poured onto my waffle, but it was still good. I finished everything and my belly was super full. Total for this $ 11.99… Jambalaya– Friend says it’s delicious and it’s one of the best meals he had. I tasted it, and it was pretty good. I forgot how much was this, but it was more than mine. :(He couldn’t finish it all though, so he took it to go. Oh, friend ordered sweet tea to go too(it’s refillable!). He believes it’s mighty good. I would say it also if I was a fan of too sweet things to drink.(I don’t like drinking something with a lot of sugar, it gives me phlegm. I even stopped drinking soda!) Service was good for me since there was almost no one there and the cook also came by and asked how was the food with an enormous smile on his face. Made me smile. Place, a little cramped. Parking, small and a little annoying. Food, decent. Price, a tad bit too expensive… Three stars. P. S. If you want chicken and waffle for more bang for your buck, I suggest going to Pancakes & Waffles. Trust me.

I had brunch here with some of my friends and at first it was a bit hard to find. This little restaurant is located on the corner of Waialae Ave. and St. Louis Dr in Kaimuki. There are ample parking across the street. For 2 hours you pay $ 3 at the parking meter(only accepts exact change or credit card), not bad. Food was good! I had the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict and it was served in large portion and my friends had the Chicken, Egg and Biscuits, which was also served in large portions. The owner was nice and attentive and same with the waitresses. The only drawback is the expensive price for the food. The meal plates are $ 14 and up. Otherwise I will be back here to try their other dishes.

I wanted to love this place… sorry. Bought a Groupon certificate to try this place… went with a fellow Unilocaler… order the«signature dish» chicken and waffles… Two very large pieces of chicken… juicy, but oily and the batter was sliding off… it was ok(actually I make better fried chicken) Waffle was really flat and thin… not much flavor. I asked them to put the sauce on the side because I love crispy waffles… this was more like… hard than crispy. Sauce was ok. I thought it was kind of pricey…$ 12 for the chicken and waffles… everything else was more expensive… People were nice. Sorry Soul… but think I’ll pass in the future…

Unilocal Challenge 365 # 76⁄365 So it’s a Thursday; winding the week down… read a review by Mark Y and I decide! SOULFOODHERE I COME. Now, I’ve been there before but it was Mark’s review that pushed me off the edge. For me, there are a couple downside issues: 1) Soul is in the Kaimuki vicinity. I work and live in town and am lazy to drive even a couple miles(for lunch), 2) The parking is an issue and those who have read my reviews know that parking is A HUGEISSUE with me… 3) The entrance and exit to the parking area is a NIGHTMARE! BUTFOR A GOODMEAL??? I decide to make it an early lunch to fight off the parking issues. I get there at 11:15. They open at 11(hours: 11 – 9 daily) They have a rotating menu so check the menu before you leave. Their website posts the rotating days I am guessing. Nope! Don’t want the plate combos(their combos come with some chili and is a complete huge! meal) Instead I order: May I have 4 pcs of buttermilk chicken? 3 pcs of cornbread? bowl of chili, veggie please? order of cole slaw? oh, and pecan pie! «WHAT? No pecan pie? Sorry, every other day but not today!» Okay, then may I have sweet potato pie? Piece? «No, the pie, not a piece of pie, the PIE» The buttermilk chicken is deep fried; drained relatively well from the oil which I was impressed! They lace with with a honey drizzle; That honey drizzle added a sweet touch to something deep fried. Cornbread? EXCELLENT Sweet Potato Pie? EXCELLENT– they offer a whipped cream topping. I took it on the side because I didn’t want my pie to be mushed up with the melted whipped cream. You know, the pie tastes just as good without the whipped cream also. Great meal! didn’t have a problem with entering, parking and exiting the parking lot…(lucky me!) A definite must try if you’re into southern cooking.

OK I’m the 290th review of Soul, but I’ll add my 1 cent! Soul food in Hawaii? I’ll take that. I grew up in the South though my fill of Southern food was probably less than other people because of my Asian deal. First encountered Soul the food truck at a music festival. Ordered the vegetarian chili(with blackeyed peas!) and cornbread as well as hushpuppies. Delicious! My pal enjoyed his mac n cheese with bacon. For my second encounter, I visited the brick-and-mortar restaurant location on Waialae Ave(so conveniently located after my hike from Lanipo to Mt Olympus). Ordered the«Sassy Southern Vegetarian Chili» — Chef Sean’s special Southern Style Black-Eyed Pea Vegetarian Chili served with Cornbread, Buttermilk Cilantro Cole Slaw & Rice(per the online menu). Most definitely not vegan, but vegetarian so that’s an alright exception in my book. My omnivorous hiking buddy also enjoyed the vegetarian plate. Ginger lemonade(or was it limeade?) great! Sweet tea was good too! Parking is a little iffy in that area, but I lucked out since I went during non-peak-hours, so there some available spaces in the adjacent lot. There’s paid parking across the street if needed. Soul I will be back!

Located on the corner of Waialae and St. Louis. I went with a group of 9, place isn’t that big so it gets a bit intimate. Parking is limited in the front, but additional parking is across the street in a gravel/dirt lot for $ 5 flat rate(caution for ladies with heals). I have been hearing about this place and been wanting to try it buy didn’t want to go alone. One night a group of my friends got together and checked it out… it was the best thing to do. We ordered one of everything! The fried chicken, corn bread, black eye beans, pulled pork sliders, ribs, lobster mac-n-cheese and many more I can’t remember… If you’re trying it out for the first time, do order their fried chicken and the corn bread. I could do without the lobster in the mac-n-cheese. And yes, to the sweet tea! With all the big eaters I was with, we had food left over. This place is a must try!

I needed something to warm my SOUL today. This did it but broke the bank! I must be the last person east of UH that hasn’t been to this little tiny hole in the wall. When I first approached the building, I wasn’t sure exactly what I was looking for, but it was right next to the Tropicana shave ice place at the bottom of Waialae Ave(Sabrina’s, Fat Greek, etc). Room Service in Paradise(941-DINE) delivers food from SOUL, so there was a driver picking up a large catering order when I got there(good to know if you don’t want to find parking in this tiny lot): They take PHONEORDERS, iDcard($ 5 off $ 25 or more), but most importantly CREDITCARDS(but not AMEX). Thank goodness they accept credit cards because my bill was huge today! I had to pick up food for everyone: BUTTERMILKFRIEDCHICKEN&CHILI $ 12 was delish-crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside with parts of the CORNBREAD stuck on the skin made this my favorite dish so I ordered two of them so I didn’t have to share, but I thought the chicken was crispier and sweeter at the first Street Grindz event. The collard greens, chili, and coleslaw were a nice touch: JAMBALAYA $ 20 with seafood, sausage, chicken and rice was good, but $ 20 is pretty steep for this dish. I’ve made jambalaya before and it’s a pain in the ass, so I guess $ 20 isn’t bad if y ou look at it that way. CHICKEN, SWEETPOTATOANDKUKUISPICYPORTUGUESESAUSAGEGUMBO $ 14 is good too, but again I thought it was a bit expensive. Here’s another dish I’ve made in the past but burned the roux or just didn’t have it come out quite right, so $ 14 is worth it if you’re really craving some authentic gumbo and not the stuff that you buy at Safeway in the hot food section. CAROLINAPULLEDPORKADOBO $ 8 This is a good and at least the price is right. The bread was a little bit hard, but the pulled pork was soft and tender. They were waaay too generous with the Buttermilk Cilantro Cole Slaw on this sandwich, and I thought I ordered it with sweet potato fries but when I got home, there was no hint of any fries. Oh! Get the SOUTHERNSWEETICEDTEA $ 2 This place is down home Southern cooking, but costs more than you would think by looking at this hole in the wall. I had a $ 22 Groupon, but still ended up paying $ 44. Would I go back? Probably on a Sunday morning for the crab cake benedict or for those shrimp and grits that Kyle and Ryan T quickly pointed out to me.

I love you, Sean Priester. I seriously think I am going to start a Soul fan club. Who’s with me? If you’ve ever tasted chef Sean’s heavenly fried chicken or scrumptious corn bread, you’ll know what I’m talking about. This food is the very definition of comfort… and chef Sean is a genius with a beautiful smile and such a welcoming attitude. When you eat at Soul, you feel like you’re a guest in his home. The collard greens, mac n’ cheese, shrimp and cheese grits, jambalaya… it’s all heavenly. You seriously can’t go wrong with anything on the menu at Soul! The restaurant is BYOB, but in case you forget your adult bevvies, chef Sean offers up a really delicious and super refreshing ginger drink. Don’t miss it! Fortunately, the teeny Wailae restaurant isn’t the only place you can find chef Sean’s yummy creations. You can also find Soul tents or the Soul truck at the KCC farmer’s market on Saturday, during the workweek on Bishop Street, and at various other spots around town. Follow chef Sean on Twitter(@PacificSoul) to find out the latest locations of the Soul Patrol. I’m also a huge fan of the biodegradable containers the food is served in, rather than nasty Styrofoam. Go to Soul… right now, if at all possible. Your tummy, heart and soul will thank you. I promise. ;o)

HOLYMOLYMAC and CHEESE aroni! SOUL is all you need for your mind, body and soul! Food was SIMPLYDIVINE, comforting and will make you wanna keep going and going back for more! On a total spontaneous lunch adventure, my friend Ryan R. and I decided to lunch at somewhere we haven’t tried before. I suggested Soul after reading about it in the latest Honolulu magazine and reading Unilocal reviews on our drive over. It was a perfect choice! I wasn’t too hungry that day so we decided to share a few items. Our shared menu items: *Mac and cheese ~ WOW is all I can say! I love me some cheese and this definitely was not lacking any cheese. The special for the day was a crab mac and feta cheese, but we were told to try it without the crab. *Pulled pork sliders ~ Delicious pulled pork served with a buttermilk cilantro coleslaw on a biscuit. I’ve wrote a few reviews before on how much I love pork… this is another pork dish that satisfied my pork cravings! *Sweet tea ~ I’ve had sweet tea a few times before and am not really a sweet tea connoisseur, but… I can definitely say that hands down… this is THEBEST sweet tea I’ve had! Refreshing, tasty, sweet with just the right amount of sweetness. A must try! *Fried chicken ~ By this time we were pretty full, but after perusing the menu more, I noticed that we could order the fried chicken that we kept reading about, without having to order it as a meal. OoooohMG! This fried chicken is TODIEFOR! Excellent execution and big hats off to Chef Sean! I took my time eating and enjoyed every morsel of this chicken. We enjoyed this a lot and actually did a little«Cheers» with our chicken pieces. It’s almost as though each piece of chicken is treated like a rare gem and delicately seasoned with some added love of honey butter… yes, I said it… HONEYBUTTER! My palate believes that butter and bacon go hand in hand with anything! :) The skin was crisped perfectly with just the right amount of seasoning and finished off with honey butter. Meat was nice and moist. I could eat anything with this honey butter on it! Chef Sean came by our table to say hello and make sure we were doing alright. Giving some aloha and gratitude to guests is the way to do it. Super cool guy! I definitely want to keep coming back and will refer this restaurant to all of my friends, not only for the delicious food, but to help a local business owner and business excel, especially for a Chef who cares about his guests dining experience! Cheers to SOUL!

Simply the best dang chicken ever!!! I don’t like corn bread, never have… but Sean, I don’t know what you put in those babies because all I ever do is dream about it now! I loved the cozy indoor dining area with the perfect art pieces on the wall. Did I mention the best dang chicken ever??? Thank you Soul Café!

Anonymous: How was Soul? Me: SUPERGOOD. I got the fried chicken and chili combo. 2 pieces of buttermilk fried chicken, corn bread, cilantro coleslaw, collared greens and vegetarian chili! SUPERHUGEPLATE. NOMNOMNOM Anonymous: How was it different from KFC? Me: … !!! –_____– This just goes to show Hawaii severely needed a good southern food place. Thank you Soul!!! The chicken and chili plate is ENORMOUS, all for just $ 12. The chicken was nice and crispy, and it was slightly sweet from the buttermilk. I don’t normally care for coleslaw, but this cilantro coleslaw was surprisingly delicious! A little sweet and did not include a lot of mayonaise. The collared greens were also super good, albeit a little salty. But it had a lot of flavor and I think it was made with kalua pig… er I think that’s what the chunks of meat in it were. Cornbread+ maple drizzle=awesome. The weakest item on the plate was the chili… I expected it to be more flavorful but it was a little bland… maybe because it’s vegetarian? My bf got the gumbo which was very chunky(portuguese sausage), which is good if you don’t want a more soupy/stewy gumbo. It was on the spicy side though so be prepared! We also ordered the papaya, avocado and feta salad! It was really good(it was not a southern dish at all but that just goes to show there is variety here) but it was $ 13– more than my chicken but definitely an ample portion. We were completely stuffed after. The only reason I’m marking it down is because it needs more tables and the service is kind of slow! We sat outside which wasn’t a problem but also we needed more water(spicy gumbo) and it was super busy(Saturday night) so we were having trouble getting it. Chef Sean makes up for his lag with his charisma though. BOTTOMLINE: I just want to put on a southern accent after eating here. I feel like I’m at Paula Deen’s getting a home cooked meal! SUPERDELICIOUS and reasonably priced comfort food! Just be warned that you might have to wait for a table on busy nights. I’ll be baaaaaaack ! Next to try: Seafood Jamablaya, short ribs

I just had a Carolina pulled pork sammich($ 7) from The Soul Patrol’s booth over at the Merchant Street Marketplace(2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month) in front of Davies Pacific Center on the corner of Merchant and Bishop — it was fantastic. My friend Reid warned me that the Carolina style pulled pork is not mixed in BBQ sauce like most other pulled pork. It’s more of a vinegar marinade. I was game and while I didn’t know what to expect, it totally worked for me. The servers took out a sandwich roll and just lumped a stinkin huge pile of pulled pork onto it. Then they loaded like what would have been a large cole slaw at KFC on top(I’m not kidding, it was a huge mound). A nice touch was that they used a decomposable container and bag to hold my food. I sit here with a belly full of Carolina pulled pork. I’m completely weighed down but that was really satisfying. Chef Sean has his truck working around town, but he now has his new restaurant over at the gateway to Kaimuki, that Waialae and St. Louis little food island across the street from City Mill. I hope he does well. In the meantime, I’m coming back for some more 2 Tuesdays from now.

Chef Sean Priester is a former head chef at the renown Top of Waikiki. Since then, he has opened his own lunch wagon and has his own stand at the Farmer’s Market. His newest achievement has to be Soul, a small restaurant across the street from City Mill near the University of Hawaii at Manoa. We love this place for three reasons: the great, wholesome soul food, the soul ambiance, and the chef himself. Inside the restaurant, the mood makes you feel like you are actually in the South. He accomplishes this with the colorful orange walls and jazz music. Chef Sean also goes around and greets his customers to make sure that everyone is satisfied. Of course, all that’s left to talk about is the food. We ordered the pulled pork adobo sandwich and the meat was doused with a wonderful tangy sauce that moistened the meat to perfection. On top on the sandwich was buttermilk coleslaw, which added some sweetness and savoriness. The bread had a firm consistency, like that of french or challah bread, which was able to keep all the juicy, tender meat inside without that messiness that is often associated with meat sandwiches. Soul also has their daily specials. Now mind you, these can be quite pricey, but it our opinion, it is well worth it(~$ 15-$ 20). The special that we had that day was the seafood jambalaya. Normally made with chicken or sausage, the seafood adds a different flavor profile to the dish. Mixed with a healthy portion of rice and vegetables and a blend of spices, this dish is literally to die for. Chef Sean’s seafood jambalaya wasn’t too spicy, but seasoned to perfection. He was very generous with his seafood to the point that every spoonful of his jambalaya contained at least one piece of succulent shrimp. Eating this without something sweet to drink would be a challenge, but luckily, they also have their own Southern iced tea. For just $ 2, you can get this bottomless drink. It wasn’t too sweet or too bland either, but very refreshing and a wonderful culmination to a satisfying meal.

Diary of a Secret Unilocal Agent: Mission Fried Chicken Headed down to the Honolulu Farmer’s Market on a mission. To satiate a fried chicken craving via Chef Sean’s soul food booth. Dressed in civilian clothing I bought a few heads of lettuce and three tomatoes in order to blend in with the crowd. Ordered their fried chicken plate for $ 10 which came with two pieces of fried chicken, corn bread, vegetarian chili, cole slaw and rice. I did my best to keep a straight face as I didn’t want to seem desperate. I in fact was desperate to try this fried chicken because I had been thinking about it for weeks since seeing the booth on my last trip to the Farmer’s Market. I paid cash so there was no paper trail that would lead back to me or my oily fried chicken fingers. This plate of soul food would be a worthy adversary but little Samoans always win when it comes to conquering food. I took my first bite of the deep fried chicken and giggled with delight. I proceeded to take bites of corn bread, slaw and filled my mouth with vegetarian chili. I was in Soul Food heaven! So few times in our lives do we experience elation via a plate of food and this was one of those times. Damn, I may need to give up being an agent because I was letting the delicious sides compromise the mission and cloud my judgment. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a good piece of cornbread. My fried chicken craving had been well satiated. Mission accomplished. My next mission? To go into a fried chicken food coma and watch ‘Lost’ on Hulu. This review will self destruct in 5 seconds unless you send me a compliment and mark it Useful, Funny, Cool.
