I watched in dismay as the penguin flew down Kapiolani Blvd. It had bobbed and weaved through traffic, tailed me periodically, and spit unkindness in my direction. I am not sure why the driver of the Kona Ice truck targeted me with his road rage the other day, but I am certain that I will not be silenced by his crude attempt at intimidation. There is no function important enough to put other drivers and pedestrians at risk with your irresponsible and erratic behavior. As a mobile business, you should be aware that you are a constant advertisement for your entity. When others in the community see how you disrespect other drivers, it will impact your business. Please take this into consideration, and – in the future – think before you act.

Don’t confuse Kona Ice with a «shaved» ice truck — because it’s not. If you do, you’re likely to be a little disappointed(like me) since their ice is crushed, not shaved, resulting in a completely different texture and consistently. Having said this, Kona Ice is a fun treat. They have a cool machine that crushes the ice in one second(literally!) and a nifty contraption that packs and shapes the ice in another second(again, literally!). There’s also a dispenser on the outside of the truck that allows to you choose and add your own flavors. Because of these, you don’t have to wait in line very long for your ice treat. Option of adding ice cream to your order. However, they forgot the ice cream in my friend’s order :-(

Kona Ice /Shave ice truck: I tried their shaved ice on my friend’s party. You can put flavor by yourself or ask the server to do it all for you. I loved mine with ice cream inside. I had 3 cups!!!

I got to try Kona Ice since they were one of the few food stands at the Honolulu AIDs Walk 2013. They technically weren’t a stand though, they’re a shave ice truck! That actually has more than eight pour your own syrup built into the side of the truck. That is genius, but I hope they cover it up when they’re driving! Like a lot of shave ice places the ice was soft as snow. The syrups were way above average. Clean and bright is the only true description that pops into my head. They have some exotic flavors. I had tiger’s blood which I forgot exactly what it was, but it was good! I added ice cream to my order which they did not charge me for. Not sure if that’s standard. The ice cream was a delicious vanilla that I could tell was far above the average ice cream you typically get. As for the worker’s they were very friendly and professional. The truck is absolutely adorable and hard not to spot since it’s so colorful. The prices were a tad more pricier than most places, but the quality of the ingredients seem worth it. I would definitely try other flavors if I ever see them around again since it was a perfect treat for a humid sunny day.

Kudos to Kona Ice for being part of the St. Theresa School Family Fun Fest yesterday. Being this Fest was our first, it was great to hear that school made money with no upfront investment. With nice warm weather coupled with active K-8 students enjoying Extreme Fun attractions, no doubt there was a line snaking around Kona Ice for most of the afternoon into the evening. We look forward to having you back Laura!

Kona Ice has been serving their tropical shaved ice at several eat the street events. Although basic and a little pricier than other shaved ice stores,($ 3 for a small Keiki size of basic shaved ice, and $ 5 for the large, but $ 1 off if you have the Malama Card), it’s the only truck that sells shaved ice at eat the street, so it’s a delight for my kids, especially on a hot sunny day. What’s neat is that you can help yourself to the different flavors on tap, but there’s not much flavors or other toppings to add with a small serving for a high price.

We booked Kona Ice for a company event and it was great. We got free ice cream in the bottom and sweetened condensed milk on top. The shave ice was soft and the flavors were great. Everyone had a blast putting their own flavors on from the self serve station outside the truck. The local Hawaiian music was a plus and the Penguin mascot was a hit with the kids. We’ll definitely have them back and some of the employees are planning to hire them for their kid’s birthday events.

What’s not to like about bring-it-to-you shave ice! I’d love Kona Ice even if Laura weren’t a friend of mine! :)(That makes it even better :)) No ka oi!

I really enjoyed the idea of a mobile shaved ice truck! This truck is flashy with the unique art, strobes, and upbeat music. We happened to see this truck driving around the neighborhood and decided to try it out. It is a bit pricey, but the flavors are great! They put a lot of syrup which is a plus for me… hate it when you hit ice that has no syrup on it.

MOBILESHAVEICETRUCK with FLAVORSONTAP I didn’t realize this was a franchise which actually started in Kentucky 5 years ago. Now they’ve expanded into 41 states with 220+ trucks that are reminiscent of the ICECREAMTRUCKS that used to roam the streets back in the day. Only difference is this one has gone through the PIMPMYRIDE treatment and plays jammin music and serves shave ice. All the kids at the park yesterday stopped and ran to this truck when we HEARD it(yes, we heard it long before we saw it): This mobile truck roams all over the place, but you can book it for your next outdoor party, sporting event, or festival, especially on a hot day. PRICING for parties: $ 50 for 20 keiki(or 15 regular or 12 king kona) $ 100 for 40 keiki(or 30 regular or 24 king kona) FUNDRAISING: They do a % of sales back to your sports team when you hire them to stay during your games etc. Or you can sell prepaid cards. Call them for details. TENFLAVORSONTAP The kids get to «decorate» their own cup of ice with the 10 various flavors on tap on the side of the truck or many more flavors inside the truck, including li hing! For the shave ice yetis out there like me, this ice is not as fine as Waiola, Shimazu, Ailana or Your Kitchen and the flavors aren’t homemade, so if you are looking for that, do not look here. If you need a COOL idea for your next event, this is definitely a conversation piece — my kids had a blast while they were making their shave ice masterpiece. We found enough quarters to buy the $ 3 keiki cup(with ICECREAM on the bottom!):

The idea is great: Shave ice that arrives straight at your doorstep, accompanied by bouncy tunes? Yes, please! But the reality is a major disappointment; the shave ice is mediocre at best. We paid $ 4 for a «medium» shave ice that was served in a small cup and the ice was chunky and thick, much like the kind you’d make at home during small-kid time. The syrup was high-fructose corn syrup overload, with no real flavor at all, unless you count«red» or «purple» as a flavor. You’re probably better off staying on your couch, crunching ice cubes left at the bottom of your glass of Coke Zero.
