I come here because I love the idea of a magazine shop. These are shops that are struggling in our local economy especially with huge mainland companies coming here and it’s important to try and help out these mom and pop shops. They have a good selection of magazines including Food Network and Honolulu magazine… the two I usually pick up. I don’t really have much to say since I’ve never really lingered here too long. I usually just pop in and pop out but I do try to get my magazines here if I’m in the area.

If I can’t find a magazine at the Longs on Bishop Street, I come here. They have all kinds of magazines and everything is laid out nicely in the shelves. The shop itself is also very clean compared to what you find on Fort Street. If you can’t find a specific magazine, just ask the guy sitting at the register and he’ll tell you where it’s at. I felt like a bit of an idiot the other day though because I was looking for Entertainment Weekly and so I looked in the section with all the Hollywood entertainment magazines. I didn’t see the EW magazine anywhere so I was thinking«It sold out that fast? It only came out on Friday.» I went to ask the guy and he’s like«It’s right behind you.» Damn! Yes, I felt very dumb for not turning around to look on the opposite side where there was a bunch of EW magazines.

Decent selection of magazines on Honolulu’s Fort Street Mall. Not every title to be had, but most major American mag titles, from tech to porn, can be found. If King Fort had an online lottery terminal(which it can’t, Hawaii being a state without a lottery of its own), and a redolent aroma of tobacco products, it would remind exactly of the neighborhood newsstands I used to patronize growing up as a youth in Chicago. The kind of place where I’d purchase my after-school snacks and girlie mags before I legally could, complete with a tacit wink of the eye from their cashiers, who were almost always the owners. Just something about the seediness of the Fort Street Mall and its population of oddball characters outside its door that gives King Fort the feeling of it being a neighborhood newsstand in an urban environment other than Honolulu.

Has all that you need there. Because its such a small mom n pop type store, they dont carry a huge variety and sometime brings in a limited amount of magazines(which I don’t blame them) that they tend to sell out ocassionallty.

Used to carry the most extensive selection of magazines. With people going to the Internet, there is less of a selection but still great.

Good as it gets… in Downtown anyway. Kind Fort is another one of those hole-in-the-wall type establishments in the Fort Street area. I would have walked right past it if my co-worker hadn’t brought me here after lunch one day. I was pleasantly surprised to find a wide array of magazines to choose from. Like really surprised. My co-worker picked up a gun magazine(to prepare for 2012 apparently: P) and I got a fashion/art/culture type magazine. The porn section and the guys who were rummaging that rack kind of creeped me out. But hey, whatever tickles your pickle! After Bestsellers(at Bishop Square) closes down in early March, you’ll definitely have to check out King Fort for your lunch hour magazine fix! Well, it wasn’t like Bestsellers’ magazine selection was that great anyways.
