Good service. Solid happy hour menu. Traditional seaweed, house made tofu, unique for us white folk. I would put a ring on that kabocha squash, asparagus, and bacon app.

We were walking through the shops and happened upon this place and decided to stop in. I’m not sure if the server was off his game or what but he forgot to bring us everything… water, plates, chop sticks, containers for the soy sauce. It got old after having to ask for the first thing. Now on to the food. I must say that the quality of fish was not great. If I’m paying that kind of money for sushi I expect higher quality. For example the hamachi should not taste fishy at $ 18 a roll. Furthermore, if I order two rolls it would be nice to get my order correct. I don’t think I will be back.

Happy Hour is the way to go at this restaurant situated on the second floor of a touristy mini-mall. I found this place on Unilocal because it’s literally a few steps from our hotel. But I liked it because it boasts authentic dishes along with the usual tongue-n-cheekly-named rolls. We ordered a ton of the Happy Hour menus for all six of us with the HH sake and some beer and the bill didn’t even go up to $ 200; and we were full, ordering several times over the entire stretch of our dinner there. I loved the Kara Kara and the potato cheese thang; the gang loved the aburi hamachi, the shrimp rolls, the spicy tuna, and the rest of it. Service is spotty as they are obviously very crowded during HH because of their great prices. We couldn’t find our original waiter half the time so we were getting whose ever attention we could find, including the host at the front. Anyway, you can’t beat the deal, especially when there are tourist traps set up all along this stretch of the city.

Honestly this place was great. My bf found it through Unilocal. Our first time in Oahu and he really wanted sushi. The service is outstanding and the food is very tasty. We couldn’t have been happier :-). The prices where very reasonable. The only reason I gave it a four star is because they didn’t explain the parking situation and gave us the wrong validation so we had to pay extra for parking. Definitely not a deal breaker but I just think they should inform customers :)

If you’re looking for a casual Japanese Restaurant that won’t break the bank in Waikiki, Kaiwa will be your best choice. Great customer service and ambience. The only part I feel that need some work on is the area by the sushi bar. They have boxes piled up next to the Sushi Bar which creates an unwelcoming environment. Sake selection not the greatest but it works for the food you order.

My husband and I came during happy hour. While asking questions during our ordering session, our waiter picked up in the fact that I am allergic to gluten. Immediately he offered to bring tamari-#glutenfree soy sauce! They were also able to cook up a gluten free version of the Mochi Mochi Senbei. Everything came out quickly and was delicious! We will definitely be returning!

Best meal we had in Waikiki and we went to Morimoto, too. We had everything from abalone to yellowtail to steak. Nice intimate interior or outdoor dining. Perfect for dinner after a day on the beach or shopping.

You have to visit thus restaurant. Sit at the Teppan bar and enjoy the wonderful offerings. Started with hamachi jalapeño and ume, assorted sashimi, cheese lotus root appetizer, grilled live abalone, lobster tempura, hearts of palm tempura, vege tempura, hamachi Kama, okonomiyaki, pork belly with grilled Vegas. Ended with 3 outstanding desserts: banana choc crêpe, chef’s special pineapple sauce over vanilla ice cream and signature dessert of crispy shell opened to look like a clam filled with axils bean and vanilla ice cream and Mochi balls Service excellent. Every item was wonderful. There were a group of us so we could try all the above and share. Teppan chefs from Japan. Very friendly Definitely going back

We came on a Saturday night without a reservation and luckily there was only one table for 2 left that was open and we were able to get it! I got the lilikoi slush mixed drink and that was really good. We ordered the squid legs appetizer which was really small but was really delicious. We also ordered the beef tataki roll and the lobster entrée which were also delicious! Service was good and food was great ! Minus one star because it took about 20 – 30 mins for our first item(the squid leg appetizer) to come out because they clearly forgot about it… a small cold dish doesn’t take 20 to 30 mins to come out.

Excellent service. Staff is extremely quick and friendly. Love the happy hour specials from 5−6pm. The restaurant can get a bit full at times so I would recommend a reservation.

We followed several of Brandon S suggestions. Our favorites were the Hearts of Palm tempura and lobster tempura. Renkon cheese«pizza» on lotus root was unusual and surprisingly good. A few of the other items we ordered had some disappointments, such as some tempura leaves that had been cooked ahead of time and an odd dressing on the watercress in the Hawaiian trio. Toss up 3 – 4 stars, will give Kaiwa the 4.

Kaiwa is not your typical American sushi spot; it seems that some of the bad reviews reflect this expectation. We personally loved it, from the hamachi carpaccio to the kaiwa(nigiri) plate. Everything was so fresh and the fish was buttery soft. The Ohana roll was perhaps our least favorite — the salmon skin made the roll chewier and harder to eat than we expected. We finished with the green tea parfait which was this wonderful mix of green tea shaved ice, sweet beans, corn flakes and vanilla ice cream. Very inventive and Japanese.

Food is okay. The sushi was fine. Service was slow. Lunch special is good for the area. Called ahead and was told parking would be free, but ended up paying $ 6.

Needed to eat at a place that would validate my husband’s valet at Embassy. Was on our way to eat some burgers but passed by This Japanese restaurant. Looked at the menu and prices looked good. Got seated right away. Talk about awesome service! Our server was Lek… Love her. The food?! Omg! We had the clams for an appetizer. I ate sushi and my hubs ate some sort of seafood. Everything was delish! Love this place! Thank you for a great date night! We will be back!

I never knew this place even existed and I thought I knew waikiki. This place is hidden on the second floor of the plaza. I went around lunch time after a meeting at the Moana Surfrider. Atmosphere: Plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor. You have a view into the kitchen from the dining area. Some japanese themed decorations. Service: Good service. Very attentive. Food: I ordered the tempura and sashimi lunch special. The tempura were cooked well and the quality of the food was above average. I thought the portion sizes were a tad bit small but maybe because I was just hungry. Intangibles: The lunch specials make this place worth going to, but the prices at dinner seem a bit outrageous. See for yourself…

This place is awesome. Super inventive and awesome dishes! We tried soo many great dishes. The hamachi jalapeño carpaccio was awesome, the teriyaki chicken superb, kona baby abalone unreal. The Seafood Toro Toro Yaki had a great combination of shrimp, tako, scallops, and a mountain yam – it was like nothing I’ve ever had before. So good. I wish I knew what was in it. We had a couple other dishes that kinda are a blur for me but one was a great salad with excellent dressing and the other was hot. The décor was fabo and we sat on a clear acrylic case floating above a zen garden… I call it «perma zen.» We sat in front of the grill and got to talk to the chefs who all had Japanese accents which made for a real authentic feel. The highlight was the chocolate banana crêpe for dessert. It was a big serving size so we shared and it made my wildest dreams come true. Some items are a bit pricey but given the location and the high quality of food it’s worth it.

I’ve been here a couple times for lunch and they have a great lunch deal with kamaaina discount. This review is for their dinner experience. We came for a birthday celebration and everything was delicious. After reading Frolic’s review of their secret menu, we had to try their heart of palm tempura and lobster entrée. Both were so delicious… man, the sauce with the lobster is heavenly. I had the seafood okonomiyaki and pipikaulau/watercess salad. The salad was so good and the poached egg mixed in made it even more unique. The service was exceptional and the staff really went out of their way to celebrate our friend’s birthday. All in all, we’re definitely coming back for dinner again.
