Cheap, taste good. The unagi don is good. The ramen suck. The katsu curry is above average. Anyway i glad its 50% off(groupon.)!!!

This is a really great fast food take out place in Ward — it’s even better cuz they accept the iDcard! 15% off already really low prices, sweet! They have a lot of different dishes; curries, bowls, plate lunches, ramen… I tried the garlic sauteed salmon and it was a really good size for less than $ 8(less than $ 7 with the iDcard), it came with rice and salad and some relish stuff. They have brown rice but ran out by the time I got there. The salmon was cooked perfectly and it sure was tasty! I’ll be back to try the other dishes real soon!

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I normally wouldn’t expect much from a place like this, but it taught me not to judge a book by its cover(although it’s not all their fault — Ward Warehouse should probably spend some $$ to upgrade this little food court area). I ordered a tonkatsu curry, and was pretty impressed. The tonkatsu was better even than most sit-down Japanese restaurants I’ve been to — nice and thick, juicy, and a nice crispy panko coating. The curry was really good too, which they keep separate so you can pour it on yourself so the katsu doesn’t get soggy. I also liked that they include a salad and some tsukemono. And all for a very affordable price! The workers were nice too. They cook things to order, so my food was nice and hot. It took a reasonable amount of time and I didn’t have to endure the wait time cited by other Unilocalers. I would definitely return(I actually think about driving there from Downtown for lunch — their tonkatsu beats Panya’s hands down!).

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this place. I came here with my sister, so we ordered a variety of items to try. We ordered a chicken katsu curry meal and I liked that they placed the curry in another take out container, that way they crispy chicken would not get soggy. Gyoza was fried nicely and the filling was standard. Ramen noodles were chewy and al dente. The set meal is the best deal, price wise. There’s only two workers, from what I could see, but the wait time wasn’t too bad.

The food is decent but the wait is atrocious. There were only two workers during the peak lunch hour. I literally waited 20 mins for my food.

Why do I feel so bad for giving 3 stars, why?! 3STARSMEANSIT’S A-OK! At least that’s what the meter rating above the box in which I’m typing this review keeps reminding me anyways. But I feel guilty, as if people are food snobs and won’t even eat at places with less than 4 stars… thankfully no one on Unilocal is like that… In anycase, this place was A-OK. If I’m feeling lazy and I’m at Ward Warehouse with a distinct craving for cheap Japanese food, then this is where I will go. How often will that happen? …probably not much, but at least it’s a change of pace from all the sandwich-type places in the area(Ku‘aina, Kaka‘ako Kitchen, Paina Café, etc.) By far the best deal that can be had between a small Japanese couple is the Large Curry Combo Set. For a little more than $ 15 you get: A) Large Paitain(or Miso, but the Paitan is just a tad better IMO). They advertise that the Paitain has been cooking for 7 hours +, but the Char Siu included would beg to differ as it isn’t the decadent kind of Char Siu common to more well known Paitan joints(Yotteko-Ya or Tenkaippin). B) Choice of Curry & Topping w/Japanese Garnishes and House Salad. The Chicken Katsu is nicely breaded, and a joy to eat when dipping it at your own pace into the included cup of curry sauce. The Garnishes: pickles and ginger(?) are nice sour bits that are the anti-thesis to the salty-spicy flavor of the curry. The house salad is fresh though generic, but also a healthy reminder to «EATYOURVEGGIES!» C) 6 pc Gyoza. Generously sized, these Gyozas are neither manini nor bambucha-sized, but they are slightly larger than the average Generic Ramen Shop. A plus considering the gyoza was neither memorable nor forgettable. Altogether, the gyoza says it all about this place… middle of the road, neither impressive nor dismissive. While they may offer a good deal for the budget conscious along with making a serious effort to provide good food, there isn’t anything in particular that makes me want to come back time after time. Lasting Thought: Curry King is right next to Dairy Queen!

Dear Curry King, I admit I may have pre-judged your establishment. MIxed Unilocal reviews combined with the dirty corner, the infestation of mite ridden doves flapping around frantically, spreading their little mite-y feathers about… I would never have eaten at your restaurant had my mother not made me. Fortunately, being the filial daughter that I am(bwahaha) I agreed to partake of your wares. Vegetable croquettes, surprisingly delicious. Paitan ramen, surprisingly delicious. Curry sauce, surprisingly delicious though I needed a $ 1.50 side order to sufficiently douse my rice. Curry plate comes with tossed salad and Japanese pickles? Nice. You aren’t the fastest service in the West and would be death to a half hour lunch break, but perhaps that’s the price of the croquette’s deep fried deliciousness. I will be back. I will brave the birds and their diseases. For you. Sincerely, Angela

I just remembered that I purchased an online deal for this place. Since the traffic wasn’t easing and we r hungry we stopped by @ Ward n redeem my voucher. We ordered Combo #6 mini croquette curry + miso ramen + 4pcs. Gyoza. Pork fried rice, tako balls, spicy wing… I was not sure what to order so I relied on my fellow Unilocaler’s suggestions. The verdict — miso ramen was not bad at all. The only thing i did not like was the pork fried rice, it was too bland and greasy.

Good place for a quick lunch or dinner. Not a fancy place or anything in that matter but if you are short on time and passing by I would recommend that you stop by for some Ramen.

Would never go to a place like this, except for my Grandma. She LOVES trying new ramen places. And recently she’s been wanting curry, too. So I secretly got the Groupon for it and planted the seed: «Hey, Grams, do you wanna go to Curry King and Ramen, too? It’s got ramen AND curry.» Then we dance for a few weeks: «No, no, I’ll just eat at home,» and«Okay, next time.» Repeat conversation. Like clockwork, the fourth time we have this conversation, she says, «Okay, sounds good,» and off we go. Now other than the name and location, I knew nothing about this place. I was surprised at how pricy it was. I can’t imagine I’d ever spend 15 _real_dollars(not Groupon bucks) on a bowl of ramen and some curry. The good. They offer a curry, ramen, and gyoza combo. Perfect for Granny. They offer it in mini. Even perfecter. Also, they have brown rice at no extra charge. Gotta admit, I was pretty stoked about fried oysters. The gyoza wrapper was not too thick and it had a lot of veggies in it, not just meat-meat-meat. And someone else mentioned the soup spoons – that they took a picture with them. Well, I took mine home, so beat that! The bad. The paitan curry didn’t look anything like the creamy seasoned broth in their photos. Tasted just fine – like a thick chicken stock – but not quite mouth-watering. Oh, except in how frickin’ hot it was. But once it cooled, it was really totally not bad(in the exactly slightly-above-average sense). The veggie croquette and the salmon katsu both just tasted like fried. I like«fried» as much as the next person, but it should add to the flavor of things, not smother it. No choice of dressings on the salad?!? No covers for the liquid items??? The ugly. We were being stalked by the birds. They were just waiting for us to drop any morsel of food and they’d flock over, fight, and fly off in a flurry. Gross. A win for getting Grandma a new ramen and curry experience – at the same time – with gyoza to boot. A win for being totally decent food at a decent price – thanks to Groupon. A win for checking that place off my list of ever having to go there again. A win for knowing that I’d be willing to go back there if I ever had to. Boo for seating(and [lack of] customer service at the counter [plus was sooooooooooooooooo slooooooooooooooooow]).

Maybe I’ve been lucky because after seeing so many of the other reviews one would think I should have run away screaming towards the hills. But lucky I must have been and three times thus far because that is how many times my wife and I have eaten here. Part of our ongoing return is due to Groupon and Hot Deals Hawaii, both my wife and I purchased one of each for a total of four coupon deals here. We’ve found the salmon katsu curry to be one of our favorites and I also enjoy the pork katsu curry. The fact that they keep the curry separate from the entrée is fantastic because you’re not left with soggy katsu if you decide to do take-out. Plus you can decide how much or how little curry you want to use. The flavors are spot on for Japanese curry and we appreciate the ability to upgrade the white rice to fried rice for $ 1.50 more per plate. We’ll continue to go back to use our last coupon and see how things work out for them in the future.

I don’t know if it’s because I wasn’t expecting much anyways… but this place isn’t THAT bad… but I must say, I’ve had better. The nice thing about this place is that they have«vegetarian» options. One is tofu, and the other is vegetable tempura… but I’m pretty sure that the curry sauce itself has meat essences. Would I go back? No… I just thought I’d check this place out before it closes because it sure doesn’t look like it’ll last. The workers there were super apathetic too. Unilocal 365 Challenge #166/365

Bought a Groupon for this place just to try. Service was ok, same as any carry-out place. Food was ok since I had the Groupon and got quite a large amount of food for what I paid, but the taste was so-so. Would probably not go back and pay full price for the food, although the combo does give generous portions of food.

CURRYKINGSTOLEMYMONEY! I ordered a gyoza curry December 3rd and used my card to pay. He swiped it and the transaction took longer than usual. Shane told me to take a seat while we waited for it to go through and in that time frame, he started to make my plate. I waited on the sidelines patiently. When my plate was done, he called me over and told me that the transaction didn’t go through and that we would have to swipe the card again. I was good about it and handed it over. When he swiped it, the computer said it was not authorized to swipe. I knew I had money in the bank so I thought that was really strange. Shane insisted that the transaction didn’t go through and he didn’t know why my card wasn’t being authorized. He seemed pretty genuine about it, so I went to the nearest ATM. Unfortunately, it was Central Pacific Bank(Not my bank!) so I had to pay a $ 3 charge. Gave him the cash and left feeling pretty bad about the experience. He did give me a $ 1 discount, but something just didn’t feel right. When I got home, I checked my online account. Sure enough, the transaction was slated to go through. First reaction: Oh. Hell. No. Called up Curry King immediately. First thing that Shane said was that he had to check his own bank statements to see if it went through. If it did, he told me he would refund my money back. I asked him if he would remember me and he said yes. He said to call back the following Monday. Monday morning(Dec.5), I checked my bank statements, again, and it definitely went through. I immediately called Shane at 9:50 am and let it ring for a good couple of minutes. No answer. Tried again at 10:05 am. Still no answer. Called again at 11 am and finally he answered the phone. I told him that I had proof that it definitely went through. He agreed to refund me the money. I told him I could come down and give him my card since I worked five minutes away, but he said I didn’t have to make that trip since he could refund it on his end. He told me to give it a few days for the refund to go through. It’s now December 11th and he still hasn’t given me back my money. I’ll try to call again tomorrow but even if he ends up giving it to me, I ain’t giving him a better review. In all, I paid $ 20 for a $ 9 curry that was just average. Not cool, homie. With that in mind, I added one more things to say when people ask me about restaurants that I don’t like: — Golden Coin Waipahu = «Oh, you mean the racists?» — Fresh Café = «Oh, you mean the hipster nazis?» — Curry King = «Oh, you mean the guy who steals your money?» — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — 12÷12÷11: So after showing up at his restaurant and giving him my bank statements AND calling my own bank to confirm, he gave me cash back. It may be $ 9, homie, but that’s 18 apple pies at McDonalds.

We decided to go to Curry King because they had a hotdeals coupon. It’s a small shop next to Dairy Queen at Ward Warehouse: Curry and Ramen Combo Set — 4 stars overall — for $ 9.55, we received a pretty large bowl of Paitan ramen with a pretty good size plate of curry with rice AND gyoza. The soup was average, and the curry was average, but they had japanese char-su which tasted pretty good. Although the noodles were too soft and overcooked, the combo was a LOT of food that we could have split with the kids for only $ 10. We got the best deal out of the combo than ordering the ramen or curry by itself. Charsu Ramen — 3 stars — For $ 7.88, got a little larger bowl than the combo. They should have just called it Paitan ramen because it was the same soup and noodles except more japanese charsiu in the bowl. Chicken Katsu Curry — 3 ½ stars — for about $ 8, we got a big serving of katsu curry which is average tasting. They give you the curry in a separate container from the chicken katsu and rice so you can put as much or little as you want. However, the rice was too mushy, and we didn’t care for the salad and pickled vegetables. Service — 3 stars — your usual ramen take out service. However, no complimentary water, so we had to buy bottled water for There’s tables and chairs in front of shop to eat at. The menu says no msg, so that’s also a plus, but if they can perfect the noodles and rice to be not too mushy and soft, it would be awesome. A convenient place with lots of parking that’s open until 9pm.

Just got the Hot deals Hawaii ½ off certificate and wanted to try this place out(since I love Curry and Ramen) but after actually getting my food I was pretty disappointed. Parking: Tons of free parking at Ward Warehouse Atmosphere: This place is clearly a take out. Order and go hope to find a metal table to sit on. The whole food court there is not to my liking Service: The place is pretty small. You have a guy taking orders/cashier and one guy cooking. When we ordered our two dishes the guy said it would only take 5 mins. It ended up taking 15 but still not to bad for the size of the place. Overall initially the service was fine. My main problem was that when I got home I found out that he didn’t give me my curry for my ramen/gyoza/curry dish. So we had to drive 15min back to ward just to go pick up like 5oz of curry for each dish. The guy did offer me a soda but I refused. Price: The place is pretty reasonably priced. Most of the ramen dishes start around $ 6. The combination items will run 10 $ after tax and include a really small bowl of ramen, 4 smaller sized gyoza and a decent size curry + side dish item. The curry plate did include a iceberg lettuce salad as well. Overall the reg portion items seem to be pretty good bargain. I can’t say that the combination is really good bargain. I think other ramen places(in which they have an actually eat in restaurant) sells combos that are bigger for only 1 – 2 $. The only reason we came here was that they had a Hot deals Hawaii ½ certificate for $ 20 for $ 10 so $ 10 for two persons meals are a pretty good value. Food: So the two of us(my gf and me) ordered two combos. One miso ramen combination with chicken katsu curry and gyoza and one paitan ramen combination with veggie croquette curry & gyoza. The gyoza were well cooked, on the smaller side and no to memorable. The curry was very liquidly and again nothing memorable. The one piece of chicken katsu was nice and tender and might have been the best part of the meal. The miso ramen was pretty standard and I did like the noodles. The paitan ramen was pretty boring overall. Not much flavor. Both combination ramen’s included a piece of charshu which is very very fatty, like 95% fat. Sure the fatty charsu gives the ramen lots of flavor but when you bite into it you’ll see that its all fat. Overall: So I made my first visit because of some promotional coupons and I gave this place a try even though I would probably never go here to eat. After waiting 15min for my food and drive all the way home I find that my order isn’t complete and have to drive all the way back to get all my food. By the time we get home to eat everything is cold. Does this place have OK food. Yeah but nothing amazing and the restaurant definitely isn’t a place you will enjoy«eating in» at. Will I be going back. Nope. And unless you get a free meal I wouldn’t recommend you eating here.

I had lunch here yesterday with Gary N. Lucky for me, he had the Hot Deals Hawaii $ 10 for $ 20 offer for Curry King. Score! Curry King offers the usual ramen shop fare — different kinds of ramen, curry rice dishes, and donburi. According to the menu, they don’t add MSG to their food. The Curry & Ramen Combo Sets for $ 9.55 include a mini ramen(paitan or miso), 4 pieces of gyoza, and a mini curry plate(katsu, ebi fry, kaki fry, croquette, spicy wing, or shabu shabu beef). For $ 5 more you can have a regular ramen and regular curry plate with 6 pieces of gyoza. I had the mini paitan and mini pork katsu, and Gary decided to go large for $ 5 more with regular paitan and regular shabu shabu beef curry. Using the Hot Deals Hawaii Coupon, we only had to pay $ 7.22 for all that food and two drinks. Sweet! The Paitan Ramen is not nearly as good as Yotekko-ya, not even close, but it’s still okay considering that Curry King doesn’t use MSG. The paitan was very light, not too salty, and I didn’t get the MSG buzz even though I drank all of the broth. Like another reviewer mentioned, the noodles were a little sad– very soft. The Pork Katsu Curry was good — nothing amazing, but not bad at all. The katsu was crispy and not too greasy, the curry tasted fine, and it came with lots of rice and a bit of pickled veggies. The dish also came with some tossed salad, which was nice. The Gyoza were cute little suckers that could have been from any other ramen place. The combo set was a ton of food! I barely finished my mini paitan and gyoza, so I ended up saving my most of my mini katsu curry for later. Gary finished all of his food. Unbelievable. Since it is a take out place, the food comes in styrofoam and plastic containers, and interestingly, the curry came in its own container separate from the rice. One of the nice things about Curry King is that they have BIGPLASTICNOODLESPOONS, not those dinky little white spoons that can only hold one noodle. I was so excited and impressed that I made Gary take a picture of them.

Not sure where the last person with the review has eaten, but this is the WORST I have eaten in a long time. We wanted to try paitan ramen because Yotteko-ya in the McCully Shopping Center is famous of their paitan ramen and we often enjoy ourselves there. So, here we go on Discoverer’s Day because my sister was off from work. My my mother, sister and I ventured to the Ward Warehouse. We were a bit confused because there was a sign for new places but no directions. It took a while but we found the directory and located the«mini» food court which had all of 3 restaurants, one of them being Dairy Queen. I asked if all the soup based was paitan, and he said yes, so I ordered paitan ramen($ 6.26), my sister ordered ma-bo tofu ramen($ 6.88) and we had the six piece gyoza($ 3.88). My mother opted for sushi from the other food court. Yes, the service was great in that he brought our ramen(in the styrofoam containers) to our table. But, as I did my first taste test of the soup, OMG it was AWFUL! It was like colored hot water. I wanted to add shoyu but no shoyu at the condiment counter. Thank GOD my mother had shoyu with her sushi that I was able to snag and use to at least add some flavor to the hot colored water. Then my sister tasted her ma-bo soup and it was rather good. Then we both delved into our noodles and OMG, I thought we ordered ramen but we actually got overcooked saimin and it was AWFUL!!! My sister(who normal scarfs up everything) left most of the soft whatevers that was in the soup which they tried to call ramen. Mine was not as mushy by certainly not ramen. Ohhhhh, what a disaapointment. To top it off, the gryoza stuck to each and onto the paper serving plate AND, the sauces was SWEET??? What was that? When I was done, I went to inform the order taker that I thought i ordered ramen but it was so soft and mushy it was worse that saimin, he said that the noodles they got were a bit soft this time. Really? Then why are they cooking it so long. Not getting it. I am not a chef, but I know noodles like the back of my hand and these were worse than awful, we thought we would have trouble keeping it down. I can say that the prices are reasonable but I guess you get what you pay for. Never again will we go there. We will stick to Yotteko-ya for our delicious paitan ramen.

Curry King is a Japanese take out restaurant located in the small food court near the Diamond Head end of Ward Warehouse. I had originally gone there to get a cheeseburger at Everybody Loves Cheeseburgers, but found that it had shut down and Curry King had taken it’s place, so decided to try them out. They serve the usual range of Japanese comfort foods like katsus(chicken, pork, spam), ramen, etc. I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry plate for $ 7.28, which came with a free bowl of miso soup, currently on a promotion. The miso soup was a cut above the usual soup that I have gotten at most Japanese restaurants, which usually only contains little bits of seaweed and tofu. Curry King’s version had chunks of onions, carrots, potatoes, daikon, pork, and a clear, chewy ingredient(sorry, can’t think of what it’s called). Tasty! The Chicken Katsu Curry was served in a larger than usual styrofoam container, and filled it up nicely. A large skinless chicken katsu portion(if a bit thin) coated with panko atop a large portion of rice, a side salad with thousand island dressing, and little portions of shredded ginger and takuan on the side. The curry was separately served in a small soup bowl, with plenty to cover the katsu and rice. All in all, a very tasty and very filling meal which, for $ 7.28, is a great value, especially these days with rising food costs, and all. The service was also great. Instead of calling my number or name, an employee came out and personally delivered the meal to me. What a great discovery! I am definitely going back to try their other items.
