Our Lauhala weaving teacher recommended Chai’s for the food and local music that performs there nightly. She recommended the Appetizer Sampler and the Desert Sampler — but since we arrived there a little later in the evening, opted for a lighter meal. Maui Maui, Duck Breast Salad with Tangerine Vinaigrette and Crab Cakes. However, we saw many tables with the Kataifi & Macadaia Nut-Crusted Kaua’i Prawns… which we definitely regretted not ordering! We absolutely loved the place! Great food and ambiance. Loved that you didn’t have to sit in the«bar» to hear or see the entertainment. Definitely will come back! Loyal local patron commented that they would be moving to a new location in the upcoming months off of Ward Street — with their own parking! So be sure to call and verify location before heading over! PS…the Crab Cakes were the best ever! And for those that love Bamboo Bistro in Corona Del Mar… you would love this place too!

Just… wow! First time dining tonight. Granted, the situation was a bit special(I was a guest at a wedding), but in terms of quality of food and service — it was SUPERB. Review for each portion of dinner is as follows: Appetizers: –Fresh Ahi Katsu w/Wasabi Curry Sauce –Grilled Pork Tenderloin Satay w/Thai Peanut Sauce –Sun-dried Tomato and Puna Goat Cheese Wonton –Gravlax Roulade w/Crab Meat and Cream Cheese Mousse –Roasted Butternut Squash and Lobster Bisque Shooter These were served on a one-piece per person basis. Ahi Katsu a bit on the bland side; Grilled Pork Tenderloin was a bit more dry(but the peanut sauce was on-point!); Tomato and cheese wonton & Shooter was A-OK. But… I LOVEDTHEGRAVLAXROULADE! I ate this within a bite and wished they served more :(So delicious, yet very light! Salad –Smoked Duck Breast Carpaccio Salad w/Tangerine Vinaigrette This dish was served to each guest. They must have made a last minute change to the menu because I’m 100% that I ate a piece of jumbo shrimp instead of duck breast. Nonetheless, it was yummy! The shrimp was wrapped in some type of crispy, stringlike layer! It gave a great crunch when eating. **Whoops! There were pieces of duck breast — which was amazing. But the focus was the tiger prawn. So no change to the dish there!*** Entrees –Deconstructed Beef Tenderloin Wellington –Long Island Duck Bistro Style –Crispy Whole Snapper –Wok Seared Jumbo Black Tiger Prawns These dishes were served two-plates per 10 people. I can’t reinforce this enough, but… THISISWHERECHAI’S GRABBEDMEBYTHEHEARTSTRINGS. I don’t eat duck & I could care less when diving into a dish that involved the ENTIREFISH. But… Long Island Duck? Crispy Whole Snapper? oh. my. god. Loved it. Loved it. And loved it some more. If I had the chance, I would’ve taken Thirds, Fourths, and so on… !!! Happy face all the way! Desserts: –Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate Pyramid –Heart Shaped White Chocolate Amore Truffle –Crème Brulee Sampler –Molten Chocolate Lava Cake I really did wish I could have enjoyed these sweet treats! I was so stuffed that a Sweet Tooth such as I could only grab a spoonful from each, so it’s a must to self-control on main dishes haha. But, if I had to give my #1 to, it’d be the Lava Cake. Oh Chai’s… I’ll be seeing you again. It’s definitely a wonderful place for a more laidback dining experience. But, if you plan to dress to the Nines, with a pair of Spanx, be warned — or better yet, save yourself the trouble and wear some comfortable clothing. Your stomach will say thank you.

Had the two person 3 Course Pre Fixe Dinner and it was delicious. I have to say Chai Bistro has never disappointed me. It’s on the expensive side, but you get the whole package: Great food, live entertaintment, open air seating, nice ambience, and nice bathrooms. Had the following: Appetizer: Tempura Shrim, Seared Ahi, Crab Cake Entre: Mahi Mahi and Beef Tenderloin Dessert: White Chocolate covered ice cream, 3 different flavors of crème bulee — Kona Coffee, Thai Iced Tea, traditional w/Rasberries. Every bite was delightful. Definitely recommend this place. Great place to take a date or your parents. Hell, even great place to take someone you hate and make them pay :)

Came here for the Funinthe808’s social mixer, so we had the restaurant to ourselves. There were special prices for pupus($ 7) and drinks(varied). Had their duck breast salad and a taste of their oysters. Food was good, but not worth the price and for the amount that they give. Nothing really special. Setting was alright, but again, nothing exceptionally special. Probably wouldn’t come back on my own.

2.5: 3 for the food, 2 for the physical restaurant Had Easter brunch here, which was also my first time dining in the restaurant. I had been to Chai’s a few times in the past for pau hana events. The brunch was good for a buffet — a nice variety of food that wasn’t typical buffet fare. Kabocha soup(which was delicious), filo-wrapped shrimp, garlic shrimp, greens, green papaya salad, seared ahi, curry, beef brisket(or something like that), mini-samosas(I think). There were a few things I didn’t try: salmon, crab cakes, veggie stir fry. I believe dessert is provided by JJ’s Bistro — chocolate, green tea, pb and chocolate mini-cakes, as well as crème brulee. The pb and chocolate was the best. They also had clementines, grapes, and lychees. The brunch was nice, but as far as the location is concerned, it seems to be poorly kept. For what I expected to be a fine-dining establishment, the place seems run down compared to what it may have been in the past. There was crap on the bar next to the desserts — a see through container with supplies — plates, cups, etc. Definitely didn’t belong there. The buffet was outside across the way and visually it was very boring. The ladies restroom had a leak from the ceiling. There was a bucket collecting water from the leak, but there was also another leak from another part of the ceiling and the water was collecting around the bucket on the floor. It hadn’t been mopped up in a while and I had to step through the puddle — there was no dry floor to step around on. I think it’s worth going for the food, but if you expect an aesthetically pleasing fine-dining experience, you will be disappointed.

Business lunch at Chai’s today… haven’t been here in years(I seem to be saying that a lot in my reviews, I guess I haven’t been getting out much! HA!) In any event… aside from being happy that I was out of the office… lunch was so nice! I ordered the Smoked Duck Salad… if you’re one for large portions… don’t get this. It was small but just right for me. Fresh organic greens, and I am usually not a duck fan but this was good stuff! My only gripe — the tangerine orangey dressing that came with it just didn’t go with the salad. Bleh. Luckily, I’m not a huge dressing person anyway so it was okay. The bottomless diet soda was a plus too! Service was good, food came out quickly — so it’s definitely a good place for a business lunch because they get you in and out! But… not that I’m a big bread eater in the first place but no bread basket which I thought was weird. I guess that’s only dinner time?! I don’t remember. And why only 4 stars instead of 5? Well, while I enjoyed my lunch, something about the décor just made the feeling bleh. I don’t know what it is… it was a little dark, and not that welcoming feeling. Perhaps I’m just used to Chai’s in the evening when things are lit up and there’s music. But as far as food, a definite good choice.

Some venues appear to best advantage after dark, when their flaws are hidden by the veil of night. The lanai dining area of Chai’s Island Bistro is a perfect example. Located on the ground floor of the increasingly vacant Aloha Tower Marketplace, Chai’s affords views of the parking lot and empty concrete courtyard. The restaurant tries to increase the attraction factor with twinkle lights, oil lamps, and flowers, which help, although the pungent odor of fuel oil is rather unappetizing. The food and service did not make up for the lack of ambiance. The cuisine, while good, seemed very overpriced for certain items. For us, the jumbo prawn appetizer was one of the best offerings of the evening. The modestly sized lobster pot pie was fairly good but consisted mainly of sauce, mushrooms, and abundant puff pastry – not worth $ 50. The desserts were plated with a flourish, however two of the ice cream«truffles» were frozen solid in the center. Our server, while reasonably attentive, was curiously distant in his demeanor, like a robo-waiter. Also, he did not take our entrée order until we were completely finished with apps and mentioned it to him. It was odd. The restaurant features live entertainment, and we were serenaded by a woman playing keyboard and singing. She was fairly good, but the all-keyboard sound was kinda cheesy. The music was almost all 60s-era dinner music, so that may have contributed to the feeling of yesteryear in her performance(without the nostalgia). We dined at Chai’s on a Sunday night, which was perfect for us since it was pretty slow and quiet. It allowed us to converse in an unhurried fashion and enjoy the beautiful night. A note to those who have trouble seeing in dim lighting – consider taking a small flashlight. One member of our party struggled to read the dessert menu by the small flame of the oil lantern(the only other lights are the twinkle lights strung above). Valet and self-parking are available just steps away from Chai’s. Self-parking is free with validation. Unilocal 365 Challenge #076/365

My dad took me here for my birthday yesterday and for all you fathers out there, let me tell you this: If you want your bratty kid to put you in a kick-ass retirement home when you’re old, you better stuff their face with food from Chai’s. I could go on forever about how awesome this restaurant is. First off, lets start with décor. Chai’s is a simple, Asian themed restaurant located on the ground level of Aloha Tower Market place. Other than the plush, red lanterns that shower over you from the ceilings, you won’t find too much glitz here. It’s a very relaxing, breezy setting with a stage set by the tables for an up close encounter with the best Hawaiian entertainment in town. If you have guests coming in from the mainland, they’ll probably appreciate this more than a stuffy restaurant as many visitors come to the islands to kick back and relax. Saying that the food was incredible is an understatement. All of the dishes that we had were thoughtfully crafted and limited our vocabulary to a simple«Wow!» with each meal served. We had their sampler appetizer and the compliments kept rolling out of our mouths about the crunchy shrimp and king crab cakes. For entrees, my dad had the kind of baby back ribs that drip off the bone, while I enjoyed the mouth watering seafood tortellini, drenched in lobster sauce. Both hit all the right spots. Later on, I got to try their white chocolate amore truffle — A strawberry sorbet wrapped in white chocolate gelato, relaxing in a pool of guava glaze. Ever wanted to know what a million bucks tastes like? Get this dessert, then. The service was, of course, friendly and accommodating. I actually got to see Chef Chai walking around all the tables, making sure everyone was pleased and happy. How often do you see that kind of thing any more? I thought that was impressive. Not only would I come back for the food, but for the sheer fact that I’m supporting a restaurant that cares about what they put to the plate. Well done, Chef Chai!

Food: I got the appetizer combo for $ 30. The Gravlax Salmon Roulade was small in comparison to the other appetizers. The other items were really good. The softshell crab was huge and I’d order a bunch of those if I could. The sauce it came with was such a great compliment to the crab. I also ordered the bbq ribs but with the appetizer combo, the soft shell crab and the complimentary pita/taro bread I was pretty full. I did have room for the banana cream cheese dessert which only had a faint taste of banana. Ambiance: quiet(besides the singer). I was surprised at how empty Aloha Tower Market place was on a Friday night. There were only about five or six tables filled at the restaurant. Still it was a beautiful night. Service: The service was quick but it seemed like our waiter wanted to be anywhere but here. He never smiled, he just took our order and walked away, never checked on us, came back to fill our water, barely spoke. Parking: Free valet parking(don’t forget to tip) with validation from the restaurant.

I initially found Chai’s Island Bistro about a week ago, when I was hunting through Unilocal!reviews to find the perfect place for a lunch date. After scrolling through the reviews on this place, I had high expectations, especially since people continually raved about the quality of the food despite the relatively high prices — I don’t mind paying a little bit of money for really good quality food. The restaurant itself is very easy to find in the Aloha Tower Marketplace and is located directly across the street from the shopping center’s parking lot. Thus, it’s convenient location seems to make it a prime location for people working downtown looking for a formal dining setting and tourists who are looking for a more local flair to their insatiable palettes. Although parking is normally rather pricy at Aloha Tower Marketplace, you can receive a validation for free parking for a set amount of time; however, this was not necessary for me, since my date and I could easily walk from the downtown area. The inside of the restaurant itself is open-air during the day and is decorated very nicely. There wasn’t much of a crowd, when we went for a mid-day lunch, so it was refreshing to have some time alone. In addition, our server was very attentive and checked to make that sure our waters were filled and that we had everything that we needed. It was also nice that we didn’t feel rushed by the waiter to eat our meal and leave to make room for other patrons — a feeling that I get at other restaurants. I remember that he was even nice enough to make a tropical fruit punch that wasn’t even on the menu. However, I must unfortunately note that this is where my compliments end. I ordered the grilled mahi mahi on a bed of Asian stir-fried fresh vegetables and Thai red curry($ 19) and my date ordered the linguini carbonara with marinated grilled chicken breast, pancetta cream sauce, and parmesan cheese($ 17). In my own personal opinion, my dish was just OK. The spiciness of the curry was just right; however, I think that the flavor itself did not really wow me – I’m a huge fan of Thai curry, and I feel like I have tasted better curry at a much cheaper price. Thankfully, the mahi mahi itself was cooked just right and the portion was appropriate to make me feel satisfied but not overly full. When I tried my date’s entrée, I was very disappointed(to say the least) and slightly embarrassed because I had personally insisted that we go here. While the portion was rather large and the chicken and pasta noodles were cooked just right, the sauce itself was bland and lacked any flavor at all. I honestly wanted to tell the waiter to take the dish back(something that I have only had to do twice in my life), but my date was gracious enough to finish the rest of her dish with little complaint although my sentiments were mutually agreed upon. So, I unfortunately have to give this place a thumbs down. Although this may have been a unique circumstance, my first impression was not very good. In my opinion, I have tasted a lot better food at cheaper places, despite the fact that the ambiance was pleasant. I would possibly make a return visit here if I had to, but I’m not sure if I would recommend this place to friends.

Unilocal Challenge 365 #02/365 atmosphere is great with indorr and outdoor seating entertainment: if you go on Monday’s you will be pleased with the 2 long sets of music(hawaiian contemporary) and a graceful hula dancer. parking: easy with valet or self parking started with a pear martini(excellent choice) a basket of taro bread and nan bread with peanut sauce is delivered to the table a starter… followed by a scallop gnochi puff pastry appetizer(this was #1 for me) chioppino, coconut milk based broth healthy portion of food with scallops, shrimp, calamari, fish, clams(this was #2 for me) my +1 had deep fried snapper: waiteress described the dish as a «whole fish with the head and tail…» she repeated herself twice just to make sure we knew what we were getting into. Okay– so the fish comes and it is in fact a WHOLE fish; sitting on your plate in a curved position… staring at you… best with the red curry as a dipping sauce dessert: crème brûlée sampler: coffee brulee, thai tea brulee and vanilla brulee.(I am the crème brûlée police and tonight: I think the coffee brulee made the hot list) The great part of the evening over and above the food and entertainment was the great company and conversation with my +1 Marko C who is visiting from LA. end of evening, time to say goodnight: music ended, dancer on her way home…

Chai’s Island Bistro — I bow down to your deliciousness! Mahalos for your good food! Chai’s is the top place in Hawaii to get Thai-Hawaiian Fusion food! He mixes together Thai food and the local Hawaiian cuisine! ONO(Hawaiian for delicious!). I went to Chai’s with my Unilocal 1+ Terry K. to celebrate her(early) birthday and to celebrate the launch of our new business! We walked into the restaurant at 7:00 p.m. and it was a packed house! Island Entertainer, Jerry Santos, was just starting up his set. He played two one-hour sets with a quick 15 minute break inbetween. He brought along his beautiful hula dancer who graced the stage with her beauty and enchanting hula dancing(she was trained by Kumu F. Hewitt). AMAZING. Jerry is an amazing entertainer who really connected with the crowd. For drinks, we ordered the Japanese Asian Pear Martini. It had a very mild taste of Asian Pear, combined with Lychee Martini. DELISH! The bartender at Chai’s is a friend, Anthony, and he puts together some AWESOME drinks. Ask him to make something special for you — never a dissapointment! To start the meal, the server brought a Dim Sum shaped basked filled with Taro Bread and Indian Nan bread. It was accompanied by a Sweet Thai Peanut Butter Sauce. YUM! For appetizers, we shared two dishes: Waimanalo Fresh Mixed Green Salad: A beautiful mix of about 8 different colors and textures, served with a light soy vinegarette. Fresh pears, tomatoes, and cucumbers topped the salad. Yum! Grade: B+ Scallop Gnocci Puff Pastery: A delicious combination of fresh potato gnocci, fresh shiitake mushrooms, scallops in a buttery french style coconut sauce. Delicious with the puffed pastery topped on the dish. Grade: A-. For our main meals, we had: I had the whole fresh Tai(Hawaiian Snapper). They get a WHOLE fish and deep fry it. It is served with fresh island veggies(green snap peas /baby corn /red and green bell peppers), a bowl of Japanese rice, and a soy dipping sauce. I ordered a side portion of their red curry sauce(Thai Red Curry) that is made with fresh coconut milk. DELISH! Grade: A. Terry K. had the Island Chioppino. It was made with fresh Kahuku corn, clams, island grilled tiger prawns, fresh white fish(Opaka?), and served in a light coconut broth. DELISH! Grade: A! For dessert, we both had the trio of Crème Brulee. Standard flavors are the French Vanilla Bean /Kona Coffee /and Thai Tea flavors. I LOVE the thai tea so much, I asked that they give me two Thai Tea and one coffee flavors, which they gladly provided. Grade: A+. There was TONS of aloha in the restaurant. From Chai walking around to say hello to his guests to Jerry Santos providing iconic music to the beautiful hula dancers to the aunties in the restaurant giving fresly made leis to their ‘Ohana(family) and guests to the smiles on the faces of the wait staff — this is a Top Class restaurant. In the words of the entertainer, Jerry Santos, his music still enchants my thoughts… «…Me ke aloha ku’u home o Kahalu’u…»(With the love of my home in Kahalu’u).

NOTE: This negative review is not the fault of our server who did the absolute best he could. This is all about very poor management. To the managers of Chai’s, if you don’t have enough people to work the front of house, turn away guest who do not have reservations. Lunch started out OK. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess and our server was quick to take drink orders, go over the specials, etc. We were seated comfortably outside and in earshot of the hostess. Within 30 minutes, over 40 walk-ins were seated including a party of 10. The problem; there were only two servers working at the time. Our drinks were NEVER refilled. Our plates sat at the table for 30 minutes after we were done with our entrees. Finally, I had to go to the bar and ask for our check. Another party waited 30 minutes before anyone took their order. Yet another party waited for someone to bring them clean forks(they resorted to helping themselves to silverware on an unused table). Sure, 45 minutes into lunch there were five servers but it seemed that tables were not being handed off to them. They were only helping new guest. Dining is a complete experience. No matter how good the food is, poor service can have guest leaving saying«that’s two hours ill never get back.» BTW, the food was only OK. Some wilted, black greens in the salads(not too fresh), the soft shell crab in the sandwich was obviously frozen and did not pair well with the garlic aioli. The smoked duck in the salad was over smoked and was extremely bitter.

OH! I just came back from a wonderful meal at Chai’s! I am totally ready to take a nap. The place was packed with holiday parties and Chai greeted me at the door himself. I feel so special! For the lunch special, they offered a 3-course for $ 25 or a 4-course for $ 40. I had elected the 3-course meal, which comes with a mixed green salad, entrée and crème tart dessert. As for the main dish, you had the selection of Wok Sear Jumbo Black Tiger Prawns, Grilled Salmon, or Skirt Steak. I had the tiger prawns with Thai black bean sauce; it was 4 big ones with mash potatoes. I tell ya, it was some good prawns. My friends had the Chinese Chicken Salad, which has more chicken than salad and tasted yummy. The Seafood risotto with hamakua mushrooms was also excellent. The ahi katsu, which is another signature dish came with this homemade delicious dressing and totally gives you a kick. We also had their infamous and delicious Signature Combination Appetizer($ 22): Alaskan King Crab Cake, Salmon Roulade, & Macadamia Nut Encrusted Jumbo Black Tiger Prawns. It was a LOT of food and we were there for quite some time, but our server was very nice and friendly. So all in all, had a good time and a great meal.

On the recommendation of a friend my wife and I stopped here the night before she had to leave to go back to the mainland(leaving me in Hawaii to work the rest of the week — tough life, I know). My first impression of the place wasn’t all that spectacular. While we had a reservation for 8:30(and it was 8:30), we saw the place wasn’t busy wanted to grab a couple postcards real quick. When we arrived at 8:35 for our(again!) 8:30 reservation, the host muttered under his breath about our tardiness but that he’d seat us anyway. Well, thank you very much for going so far out of your way in accommodating us. But hey — we’re in Hawaii, right? We dismissed his attitude and settled in for what we hoped would be a great dinner. We sat outside(did I mention we’re in Hawaii?) for both the weather and the band; while the band was playing inside we could of course see and hear them just fine outside. The volume was a bit much for being seated indoors and we were able to enjoy everything from our little table outside. Our waiter was very friendly, if not the most attentive one we’ve ever had. We started out with the appetizer platter, which included their fried shrimp that were just out of this world good. We moved on to a couple of non-traditional-Hawaiian dishes — the oso bucco and the beef wellington. The oso bucco was great(I’d never had it with pork before), and the beef wellington was very good. We decided to try their crème brûlée for dessert. The crème part was awesome, but the brulee left a bit to be desired — need more burnt sugar. Certainly touristy, but we were just fine with that; there’s nothing wrong with being a tourist on occasion, especially when you’re a, you know, tourist. I’d definitely recommend sitting outside when there’s a band playing, as I think you’d have a hard time carrying on a conversation indoors. I don’t know that we’ll go back, but I’m glad we went there during this trip.

I guess I’m just hard to please when it comes to dining out. The way I look at it this way. If I have to pay $ 25 a plate, you best believe that I want a good service and a nice meal, or maybe a nice smile to go along with it. I would have given this place 3 stars at least. if it wasn’t for the salty Shrimp risotto/under-cook, and to the unfriendly hostess. She was very unfriendly and didn’t look so thrilled to see us there that day. She must have had a really bad night prior, or perhaps she was hoping for male customers who knows? I’m not sure if I will come back to this restaurant again? But, this one I will definitely write off my list!

I went to Chai’s for the first time last night. It was for a private party hosted by Zephyr. Being that it was my first time, I’m not sure how the food is normally(if you were to eat lunch or dinner there). All I know is that Chai himself was serving food at the party and the food UBERLYAMAZING. The pupus(fresh salmon stuff with king crab on a cucumber, escargot, and lobster bisque in shot glasses) crazy good! The thai themed cuisine, sashimi, oysters on the half shell and crab claws… crazy good! To top everything off, the fried banana lumpia and ice cream with strawberry desserts were crazy, ridiculous good! Oh, I almost forgot about the seafood soup and beef tendorloin skewer thing… super crazy good! Everything was so fresh and had so much flavor, I don’t know if I have ever been to a restaurant that made everything so perfectly. Oh, and being that it was a party… open bar… nuff said. The only and I mean the ONLY imperfection in the entire meal was that the sashimi was hacked apart. I think the person that did the cutting used a dull knife. I definitely need to go back for dinner and order off the menu. If that meal is perfect then I might just acknowledge Chai’s as the best restaurant in Hawaii.

I thought long and hard about this one, the 3-star rating, that is. I really love Chai’s…always have… the food, the service, the location… especially the ambiance. I can’t quite put my finger on why my ratings on this place has slowly slipped into the A-OK area. Maybe it’s because, after all these years, it’s still the same. What first got me all excited about the Kataifi & Macadamia Nut Crusted Jumbo Black Tiger Prawns, what I actually used to wait 45 minutes in line at the Taste of Hawaii WAY back-in-the-day…just doesn’t do it for me anymore, at least in the same way. And ahi katsu appetizers are great… but let’s face it, even pseudo-gourmet plate lunch wagons are doing it, and the have been for a long time now. To change it up a little, I recently ordered the Chilean Sea Bass. It was soft, and tender… but the flavor was almost too delicate. After eating my way through the most heavenly-prepared Sea Bass at the Le Colonial in San Francisco, it’s almost unfair to have tried it at Chais… but I did… and oh well… I still love Chais… always will… just waiting to be surprised…

3 stars is being generous. Probably 2 is more accurate. We started off with no server after being seated with only a few people in the restaurant. After 10 mins I got up and located a server, this is always a WARNING and we should have left! We ordered the recommended Appetizer Comb which arrived quickly and was mostly Forgettable(semi soggy) like another Poster mentions several months ago. It’s going to be very difficult to ever return after our initial experience. Wish we had gone to Indigo and had the upscale buffet instead!
