I’m reviewing the food truck at tony group auto plex. Good ribeye plate combo. You get rice and corn along with grilled zucchini and grilled onion. Great choices of you don’t mind spending 12 – 15 $ for a lunch.

I had the pleasure of enjoying lunch at this little hole-in-the-wall eatery today. Blue Teppanyaki House is located smack in the middle of the heavy industrial area surrounding Sand Island Access Road. It’s not a place I would proactively have sought out on Unilocal and traveled to on a weekend, but as I was in the area with a friend during lunch break on a weekday afternoon, BTH offered a fine, quick, and tasty lunch. Location: Unless you work in Kalihi and are familiar with the area, the restaurant is easily found on Googlemaps, and there is plenty of parking located right in the front. BTH is located in a building that looks somewhat like a tall strip mall of local businesses and plate lunch establishments. The place was empty when I went at 1PM, but I’d suggest going early or late to beat the lunch rush hour and secure parking. Food: BTH offers no-frills plate lunch-style dining, with a teppanyaki edge. I ordered a garlic shrimp plate, and what I received was totally unexpected, but tasty all the same(see photo). The garlic shrimp here is tossed with tomato and heavy garlic, and served on a bed of sweet corn, with two scoops of rice. I have this inexplicable affinity for sweet corn, and I can seriously eat Green Giant canned corn from the can five nights in a row, so I was kind of thrilled that the plate lunch came with corn. I did miss the mac salad, but BTH substitutes the much healthier option of a grilled onion and zucchini slice in its place, so I can convince myself that the whole meal was diet-worthy because it had a veggie in it(in much the same way that taco salad with a shred of lettuce at the top is good for you). The garlic shrimp plate came with 11 nice, fat shrimp, which were seasoned well and not drenched in butter and oil, as many places tend to do. And, best of all… ~*~no doo-doo vein~*~ Much appreciated! Service: Friendly, quick. The prices here are cheap, cheap. If you have the willpower, you could save half of your plate lunch for dinner. If you have no self-control and need forced portion control, the small plate will also satiate the hungriest of bellies until you get off work. Small businesses here subsist on the 11PM-1PM lunch rush, which must be extremely difficult. Be sure to give them your business when you’re in the area!

«hum… where is this place?! never heard of it» are just some of the reactions when I mention this place to my friends, family, and even co-workers, Blue Teppanyaki is not your average run of the mill teppanyaki house, it could be just as simple grill chicken on rice with some side veggies or as special as A5 grade fillet mignon on brown rice with grilled veggies with sea salt and of course house dressing. Great for any one of you that’s looking for just right portion size for lunch, but not for those of you who find 2 scoops of rice side veggies, and 8 oz. steak a snack. If you are in a rush for lunch or wanting a quick pick up and go place… better head next door to lox bagles or subway, they do take time to prep the food(8 min — 10min) but just understand that is fresh no MSG added and you’ll feel that its one of the healthiest meals you had for month.

Sorry, it just wasn’t that good. I do realize that I unknowingly walked in 15 minutes before they were closing, but the food I ordered was just that great. My wife had the chicken and eggplant and I had the steak and shrimp. The chicken was small pieces and the eggplant was not cooked and still crunchy. The steak was chewy. Overall not really something I’ll eat again. sorry.

The owners of Saigon Drive-In recently closed their Vietnamese eatery and re-opened as Blue Teppanyaki House in the same location. When I asked what happened, I was told they lost both of their Vietnamese chefs but still had their lease on the space, so they took their Food Truck crew and moved them to this location(though the Food Truck is still operational). Same friendly staff, same space, and the same food as the Blue Truck Teppanyaki that drives around town — just in a sit-down/take-out place with short lines and tables to sit on in an air conditioned space. Teppanyaki is a fairly new thing in Japanese cuisine, originating in 1945 in Tokyo with the introduction of cooking/grilling(«Yaki») Western-style food on a «Teppan», or «Iron plate». In most of the US, this is mis-labeled as «Hibachi», which is something else completely(in most places outside of Hawaii, if someone is talking about«Hibachi», what they really mean is «Teppanyaki»). The Teppanyaki style has evolved into something less about the food and more about the performance, with Teppanyaki(or «Hibachi») chefs dicing and slicing and flipping foods in the air, lighting fires, etc. and so the pricing tends to be higher. I have never been a fan of restaurant Teppanyaki because of this. I have a large Teppanyaki grill at home, on which I can prepare Ribeye Steak slices, Scallops, Prawns, Lobster, etc. — things that would be almost cost prohibitive at a Teppanyaki restaurant at a fraction of the cost. When I walked by Blue a few days ago though, and saw their their pricing was just $ 6 for the plate of Garlic Teri Chicken Teppanyaki and only $ 9 for the Steak Teppanyaki, I had to go in and try it. I don’t need the show. I just need the food. And while Blue’s Teppanyaki/«Hibachi» doesn’t look like Benihana’s, it tastes pretty good and is waaaaaaay cheaper. FOOD: The Garlic Teri Chicken Teppanyaki is delicious, and super cheap at just $ 6 a plate. Marinated just-right, it’s neither weak nor overpowering like many other places that serve a similar dish. All plates come with Grilled Vegetables, Corn and 2 scoops of rice, along with a small cup of the great Garlic Teri sauce(which customers want them to bottle, but they can’t). The Steak Teppanyaki was not bad, but if I want steak plate it’s really hard to beat Queen Street Café’s Kiawe Grilled Steak and Blue’s doesn’t. The Grilled Vegetables were great, however, on both plates we tried. They also do a daily Fish/Seafood Teppanyaki, a 10oz Ribeye, Pork Chop with Garlic and Tomato, Scallop, Garlic Shrimp, Eggplant, and mixes of all of these. PARKING: Plenty. Blue is located in the strip mall along Sand Island Access Road. Just be careful pulling in and out. There is no barrier dividing the parking lot and the street, so people just come zooming in and out at near freeway speeds. To get an idea, imagine planes at an airport landing at full speed right next to the passenger gates, with no tower to tell people to go or stop. I’ve almost been broadsided at 60mph before while backing out of my space. There are also 18-wheeler trucks parked along the edge, blocking your view to enter/exit. Harrowing. Two of the last five times coming here, my passenger thought she was going to die. Tip: Back into your stall so you have a clear view while exiting. ORDERING/SEATING: Counter ordering with service. Walk up to the counter, tell them what you want, and pay at the register. When it’s ready, they’ll bring it out to you. Seating for five at the counter(which I prefer), four tables of four and two tables of two. SERVICE: Good, friendly — same guys who ran Saigon Drive-in at the same location before. They’re good to talk story with when you’re sitting at the counter. ATMOSPHERE: Simple. Big TV where they rotate various internet video content. Kind of odd, we were watching some kind of Dubstep competition with all the crazy lighting and dance moves, while Reggae was playing in the background in the restaurant. Just like the food, it’s good enough without much embellishment, at a good value. COST/VALUE: Great Value, especially with the $ 6 Garlic Teri Chicken Teppanyaki Plate. Almost everything here except the«special» stuff like Ribeye Steak, Scallops, etc. are under $ 10 a plate. VERDICT: 4⁄5 — I’m a fan, if only for the $ 6 Garlic Teri Chicken Teppanyaki Plate. For this alone, I will probably end up eating here a LOT. Considering that Teppanyaki of any form usually ends up costing upwards of $ 30 a person for even the cheap stuff at places like Benihana, Blue(while not fancy at all) represents a great value for anyone who is looking for cheap Teppanyaki or needs a fix for«Hibachi». Overall, Blue isn’t a place I would drive more than 10 minutes for; but if you work in the area this is a great new place to get lunch from. Note: They are only open from 10AM to 2PM so no dinner here.
