Was in town working and decided to stop at Heavy’s BBQ for lunch. Ordered the two meat plate with brisket and ribs. I must say I really enjoyed their ribs. They don’t drown the meat in bbq sauce and the meat has a really great flavor. I am definitely stopping by again. By the way, the potato salad was delicious!

Great BBQ — killer rub. Fantastic vinegar balanced sauce for finger likkin dipping! Go for lunch. One of Texas’ best — 18 hour slow smoked brisket. Great chicken. Great Ribs. Plastic crap plates… well worth a visit if you HAPPEN to be in Hondo TX.

Someone please have the name changed for this restaurant, as the other reviews have stated it is «HEAVY’S BBQ». We drove past several times looking for McBee’s before we finally went in. I had been to McBee’s about 5 years ago while visiting in the area. It rekindled my love of BBQ brisket. I was raised on Texas BBQ but having lived in the Pacific NW for many years I had mostly given up eating beef. Now whenever we visit Texas eating BBQ is the main attraction. I introduced my New Yorker husband to Texas BBQ a few years ago at Kruez Market in Lockhart. Heavy’s brisket is equal to Kreuz is my opinion. I found the meat tender enough to eat without a knife, the outside had a perfectly charred crust with lots of flavor and the inside was slightly pink. A beautiful piece of brisket! Who needs sauce when the meat has such great flavor. The pinto beans were well seasoned and not mushy. I would definitely go out of my way to eat at Heavy’s.

This is Heavy’s BBQ now. I got the three meat plate with ribs, sausage, and brisket for $ 9.50. Looks like all the by the by the lb BBQ was under $ 9.99, which is good. Ribs were ok. Little smoke or flavor from the rub. Sausage was pretty good. Brisket had some decent flavor from the bark, but it was pretty dry. Needed the sauce for sure. The sauce was thin and had a pretty strong sweetness to it. I like The thin sauces, but it needed a little more zip to it. Overall it was a good value if you are in the area, but no need to make a special trip.

Before I talk about how awesome this place is let me tell you that it has changed names to Heavy’s BBQ now, not McBee’s anymore. Their BBQ is great here. I went with the turkey sandwich and sausage. Their BBQ sauce is great if you like it on the spicy side like me. They have coleslaw, potato salad and beans to choose from for your sides. All three sides are really good and they have great flavor but my only complaint is they don’t have more sides to choose from like most BBQ places do. Mix in some mac and cheese, broccoli casserole and I would totally give this place five stars. Heavy’s is usually my first choice when I am in Hondo for work!
