This place was GOOD! Tried it for the first time recently when we were passing through Hondo. Ordered a family pack which came with brisket, sausage, potato salad, beans, and bread. Meat was delicious! I did not like the potato salad or beans. Prices are very reasonable and on par with most other BBQ joints in SA. Staff was friendly and helpful. Minus a star is because I was pretty disappointed that while we were eating dinner that one of the employee’s 2 year old was running around the restaurant screaming and crying for the entire time we ate dinner. I couldn’t understand why she would let her kid scream and cry while running throughout the restaurant as people eat. I have kids and I’m very understanding usually, but it really ruined our experience eating out as a family.

Ribs & Brisket were excellent! Did not care for the beans or potato salad. Beans were just plain beans not BBQ beans. If I was just grading on the meat, it would be 5 stars.

Excellent brisket and turkey plate. I’m a fanatic for coleslaw. I order it everywhere. Heavy’s coleslaw was creamy, flavorful, and easily in the top five I’ve ever tasted. The staff was friendly and the owner is the guy behind the counter slicing the meat off the brisket. You can’t beat it. I’d eat their food over any chain BBQ joint anyway.

Every things good here except the food. Tasteless meat and sauce. Is this even meat?

was in town from San Antonio and looking for a good place for lunch other than tacos or Chinese(get enough of that in San Anto) and BBQ sounded good. Nice friendly service and good Texas bbq. Brisket smoky and moist, chicken also tasty. Also appreciated the«God’s country» stuff displayed throughout. So good even brought home a brisket sandwich for wifey, she would got upset that I had bbq without her lol. we will definitely be back for more brisket and ribs! May God Bless them with an abundance of business!

The two meat plate is the best. We have nothing like this in Oregon. My daughter got the chicken and chopped beef. She is picky and loved it. I got the brisket and sausage and it was great. I flew in and had to try it. People have their favorites but for the price it is the best.

Excellent BBQ and maybe even 4.5-stars, but still hard for me to give them 5-stars even though I badly want to as its a local place for me(me being from Del Rio, but live in NYC now). Solid solid BBQ and best within a 120-mile radius, but I still think Franklin’s in Austin has the best brisket, Pappy’s in St. Louis has the best pork ribs, and Kreuz in Lockhart has the best sausage… all of which are 5-stars in my book, which means that I have to give Heavy’s 4-stars, but still impressive as I’m comparing them to the best in the country. Brisket: 4-stars, excellent flavor but slightly fatty and wish the smoke ring would’ve been a little thicker. Sausage: 4.5-stars, almost as good as Kreuz’s. Pork Ribs: 3.5-stars, very good, but hard when I compare them to a place like Pappy’s in St. Louis where the meat falls off the bone much easier. Cole Slaw: 4-stars, very good with a unique mustard sauce. Pinto Beans: 3.5-stars, better than most places, but not the best. Peach Cobbler: 4.5-stars, so tasty and homemade, but think they used canned peaches instead of fresh ones, but still beautifully made. Drinks: 5-stars, love the free refills of excellent unsweet tea, sweet tea & lemonade, so I can make my own combination of each. Ambiance: 4-stars, love the huge wood tables, no-frills service and smokey smell of the place. Overall, a solid 4-star, maybe even 4.5-star BBQ spot in the Real Texas(small town, not big city Texas), where trucks, boots and hats are not a «look» for hipsters, but an actual way of life.

Mmmmmmm! Heavy’s, the best BBQ in Hondo. If you happen to be in the area, this place is a must.

Had the chopped beef sandwich with potato salad. Delicious! Beef was very tender, and the BBQ sauce was tasty. Clean dining area, clean restrooms, & friendly staff. Only wish we could take this place home with us back to Houston.

Food: Good barbecue. Brisket was tender, as was the rib meat. And the sausage was very tasty. I also enjoyed the sauce, which complemented the meat, but didn’t over power it with sweetness. Service: They only offer counter service. There was a younger guy that seemed interested in providing customer service. The other man(think it was the owner) and lady seemed completely lacking in personality. Not the best business people. They weren’t rude, just not very engaging or talkative. If they are reading this right now, smile a little more. It’ll go a long way with your customers. Prices: This is where Heavy’s shined the most. Their three meat plate was only $ 11.50. And for that price you get a lot of meat, along with two sides. In my opinion, very fair prices for the amount of and quality of food that you get. Summary: This is a solid barbecue place. I wouldn’t drive a hundred miles to eat here, but if nearby I would definitely choose this over a chain place like Bill Miller’s. Also, when compared to places like Rudy’s, it’s much more affordable for a comparable level of taste and portions. Will I go back? Yup. I went with some friends this time, but I plan to take my family back soon.

Drove in from town to try this place out. Definitely worth it! The prices were fair and for the price you get A LOT of food! I got the two meat plate, and for $ 8 or so I got the most tender fall apart in your mouth brisket and falling off the bone ribs. AND some kick ass Cole slaw and potato salad. I loved the décor inside the place too. Obviously they put the majority of their work into the bbq, but they also made the place feel very homey and comfortable. I would recommend this place to any and everyone

9÷5÷1412:16pm — I was six days too late to run into Daniel Vaughn eating at Heavy’s. I did not eat the same BBQ he did. This was once the location of McBees, which made top 50 back in 2008. The name may have changed but the quality has not. I scored Heavy’s a 90 out of 100. This is Grand Champion Texas BBQ. Smoke: Mesquite. Well I knew I would run into this sooner or later. The combination of a gasser and wood fired pit. The same two twin pits that made McBees famous are still in use today, but behind them is a Southern Pride. I am guessing the briskets start out in the pit and spend the night in the gasser. Around 145 °F the smoke ring process stops and so does smoke flavor. At this point your pit becomes a oven. Only bark and fat benefit from the smoke past this point. Brisket: Excellent. Top 50 quality. A 5/16in impressive red smoke ring underneath a big black bark. Near perfect tenderness, silky and moist. Smokey fat rendered well. Full smoke flavor with a salty rub. No sauce needed. Ribs: Very Good. I wished these ribs tasted as good as they looked. They scored high on tenderness but lack of flavor hurt. A bronze bark with pink meat. A soft bite left a clean bone. Near perfect tenderness. The seasoning was visible but all the flavor had vanished. Surprisingly very little smoke flavor(gasser ribs?) These ribs only had one flavor, pork. Use the sauce. Sausage: Excellent. Anytime I see a smoke ring in a sausage, I get a little excited. At first bite I knew this was a winner. A beef/pork mixture with bold traditional spice. Just enough salt to makes it pop with flavor. The garlic and pepper leaves a long lasting aftertaste. No sauce needed. According to DV’s article, they purchase this sausage from Pollok’s Market in Falls City, Tx. Its a fifth generation recipe dating back to 1854. A fabulous link and a real connection to the old world. Sauce: Good. An average thin tangy sauce that does the job. Make sure you get it on the side.

Food: 5 stars Price: 5 stars Service: 5 stars The BBQ here was amazing! I don’t know if it was because I was so hungry but I was licking my chops when I was done with the three meat plate. Just go here and try everything on the menu! I WILL be stopping by again whenever I’m in the area!

Delicious and definitely worth the stop. Tender Brisket and moist Ribs. Plates are big enough to share — so you can have room for dessert. Sweet tea too!

Excellent BBQ in a small Texas town. This place was packed to the gills when I got there at noon. After eating my grub, I know why.

Holy Smokes! In this case mesquite! I had this week to pull my Lyfetyme trailer smoker(35 years young) from here in a Fort Worth to it’s birthplace in Uvalde for a makeover. I had BBQ on my mind and had my eye out between San Antonio and Uvalde for a BBQ lunch spot. Passing thru Hondo at 11:20 or so I saw Heavy’s. There were already a bunch of cars and trucks. Two hours later on the way back the place was surrounded by vehicles at after 1:00! I’m thinking, there’s gotta be something to this. Well, I’m a genius. The BBQ here is off the charts. I judge a BBQ joint by what it does with the Holy Trinity… brisket, pork ribs, and sauce. Kreuz, you flunk for your«no sauce» cop out. Get a life and figure out a sauce. So all I ordered here was ¼ lb of brisket and three ribs. I asked for a cut from the fatty end. Brisket? Perfect. Juicy, tender, perfect smoke. Tasty burnt ends. Ribs? Perfect. Moist, still firm, pulled off the bone perfectly. Perfect smoke. Sauce? To die for. This is the ultimate, quintessential Texas type BBQ sauce if you ask me. This is what my Czech BBQ mentor, Junior Janecka of Decatur, Texas taught me. Thin, a consistency like Half & Half, or just a tad thinner. Vinegar based with just a touch of heat and a hint(if I’m not mistaken here at Heavy’s) of cumin. FYI, I drank the last of the sauce from my sauce cup. Ambrosia. The BBQ sauce of the gods. I can’t comment on the other food they do here but that is inconsequential. Forget about it. You don’t need it. I suspect it’s good as this is clearly a store that cares about what it does. But who has room for it after a quarter pound of brisket and a few ribs? And this will just bust your wallet at a whopping $ 5.98. Haha. Awesome. Love you cats there at Heavy’s Geez, I wish I loved in Hondo

Best damn BBQ I’ve had in a long time. The brisket just melts in your mouth, not to mention it’s covered in the most delicious BBQ sauce. The pinto beans are the best beans I’ve ever had. There not too spicy but just spicy enough. This place has a relaxed country atmosphere and the owner himself serves up your food.

Great prices and good BBQ. I had the sliced brisket sandwich. It was very tender, had a slight smokey flavor and tasted great. Plenty of parking, everything was clean and the staff was friendly. Next time i’m in Hondo I will be stopping in again.
