Very strange experience. Certain items were delicious! Others not so much. Chicken fried chicken was cold. Not sure how they heated that but it made me nervous. Weirdest part is that the place reeks like cigarette smoke. I didn’t actually see anyone smoking… Perhaps in the bar side. I’m pregnant and we had our daughter with us so this was a major turn off. I thought that was illegal everywhere now. It’s been like 10 years since I’ve been anywhere that had smoking. The smoke was enough to make the meal suck. I walked out with a headache and feeling foggy.

Great alternative to fast food off I35 between Dallas and Austin. This is Southern food — so lots of fried options on the menu but also some healthy choices. I had meatloaf with grilled veggies and mashed potatoes. All excellent, especially the veggies. My daughter had an enormous portion of fried chicken tenders. Service was quick and we were back on the road in 30 minutes.

Hit the spot! I was helping out with finding dinner for a school group on its way home to San Antonio from a competition in the Dallas area. I saw from another review that Lone Star had a private room. I called ahead and was told the room was indeed available. A couple of hours later, I arrived with 40 hungry teenagers. The room was ready and we were shown right in. Scott, the waiter, was assigned exclusively to us and he did a great job attending to our every request. I’m sure it was a nightmare for him because we all ordered off the menu and there were about 30+ separate checks to deal with. He didn’t complain and was cheerful throughout. The food was good and came out hot. The portions were large. They brought out plenty of pitchers of tea and water and kept our glasses full. They didn’t even charge us for drinks! Everyone was happy and satisfied. We enjoyed a celebratory dinner and look forward to our next trip. I highly recommend Lone Star Café — especially for large groups!

Delicious. Try the fried mushrooms, they are yummy! The chicken fried chicken is definitely good & the gravy isn’t too thick that you can’t finish all the food on your plate. :) Well done all around! & I really appreciate that it’s right off the highway.

I cannot endorse any restaurant that allows SMOKING inside. The whole place reeked of smoke. Also with a pouring rainstorm outside they had the inside FREEZING. We stayed because of the rain but everything was ruined because we were shivering, everything smelled of smoke and food was passable at best. Avoid this place. Go to The Blackeyed pea. Better food. Warmer. No smoking.

Awesome food. I had the CFS, mashed potatoes and mac n cheese. It was all so good. I was so sad that I couldn’t finish it all. Don’t judge the place by the outside, once you walk inside it’s totally different. A perfect Texas small town down home cookin’ restaurant. My only complaint is the location. I live in Houston and wish this restaurant were in Houston!

We had a long 11 hour drive from South Padre to Oklahoma. We stopped into this café. It was awesome. There was three of us and we all ate so much. We ordered chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken. Their grilled veggies were awesome and delicious southern sweet tea. If you are passing through, swing by and enjoy this little place. You won’t regret it.

Great food, had the pulled pork sandwich. Most entrees are $ 8.99. Service was good. Simple exit off interstate 35. Perfect place to refuel(cool off) from the road

Ok food. What my Caucasian fiancé described as redneck food. I wasn’t impressed. In any event, chicken fried chicken was good and fried. Onion rings were massive, fried. Nice big portion of the combo(beef and chicken) fajitas. They ran out of cab, enough for only one glass. Lol. I said, just give us two merlots please. Am I going back? No. However, my redneck fiancé said it hit the spot and thanked me for picking it.

Good food. Loved the fried pickles and chicken friend chicken. The only bummer was waiting so long for a server. Apparently they have not yet figured out how to coordinate their shift change so that customers aren’t left waiting just to order a soda, much less a meal.

Ok this one of the restaurants that I would stop by every time I passed through Hillsboro, and it’s good. Now, this last visit will for sure be my LAST visit EVER and I do not recommend anyone dine in. Order take out for sure. The staff is extremely untrained and unprofessional in handling customers. The manager on duty, Steph, was the rudest person I’ve encountered yet. I tried to pay with a valid coupon and she denied everything and anything to do with it and walked away from the table after speaking a few rude words to me, I thought this was very rude. Anyways I tried to find her for some kind of explanation but she was nowhere to be found for 30 minutes, and she’s the manager. I ended up getting the owners contact info and proceeded to pay my FULLBILL. I will be trying to get ahold of the owner to let him know of the Manager that could not give any explanation and sent a waiter to tell me the news, refusing to talk to us. So unprofessional!!! I will NEVER and I repeat NEVER go back to this establishment.

My family and I were just passing through from an event in Austin. It was getting late and we needed to stop somewhere to eat. Saw this place listed on Unilocal and was rated well with very good reviews. The reviews did not lie. Got seated quickly and yet still kinda skeptical when I was browsing through the menu. With us being first timers, we asked the waiter what he recommends. He said the center cut pork chops were his favorite. So I went ahead and ordered that with the gravy on the side(in my opinion, the gravy was not needed at all) and my sides were a house salad and mac-n-cheese. My goodness, the pork chops were fantastic! Very flavorful and tender. The mac-n-cheese was delicious. My parents got the country fried steak. The steak was also excellent! Still moist and tender and yet perfectly breaded with a nice crisp. For sides, they got fried okra(could of been crispier), cole slaw, mashed potatoes and corn. All the sides were done very well. For dessert we got the peach cobbler. Very tasty. A great way to end a great dinner. Overall, the café had a good and casual atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. If you happen to be driving through Hillsboro and your hungry, go to the Lone Star Café!

Really impressed with this place. My family and I came for a quick dinner on a weekday night and we were in and out in less than an hour. Three of us ordered the burger which was insanely customizable with choice of bun(I got cheddar jalapeño), what you wanted on it, how you wanted it cooked, etc. The chicken tenders were also delicious. Portion sizes were on par and so was the service. Also very affordable. We finished with the brownie sundae which our waiter kindly gave us an extra scoop of ice cream so we wouldn’t have to order two. Overall, I’d definitely recommend for anyone traveling down IH-35.

Went at lunchtime on a Monday while on vacation. Not crowded. The food was good and the staff were friendly and took great care of us. My daughter had the burger and got it just the way she likes it. My son got fajitas for 1. They were good. The guacamole was ok– but we like it really fresh, so take that into consideration. Hubby got the roast beef sandwich and I got the chicken fried sandwich and shared. They were both good. His bun was a tad dry, but that is what the au jus is for. Our complaint is minor. Menu says sandwiches are served with a «heaping pile» of fries. We got a handful. It was a great amount, but not heaping. Would go again if ever in the area.

Quick version– decent food, plain atmosphere with great waitstaff. We stopped on our way traveling home from Dallas to Austin on a cold Sunday morning. We were promptly seated, with an energetic waitstaff We both ordered the soup in lieu of fries with our sandwiches. Both potato and tortilla soups were flavorful and came quickly. The sandwiches appeared on the smaller side for what we both considered a hoagie to be, but were both full after enjoying our meal. Overall this was a good stop to stretch our legs on our journey– I’m glad we picked here instead of one of the franchise places littered on the highway.

There are very few times in my life that I’ve been this disappointed in a restaurant. After reading so many good reviews I decided to stop in on the way back to Fort a worth at this home cooking restaurant in Hillsboro. I was seated by a grumpy guy at a booth that a child would have trouble fitting into comfortably. It was almost 2pm and the place was almost empty. This is the first«home cooking» Texas restaurant I’ve em ever been in that didn’t serve pie. I went with the peach cobbler & coffee. Horrible service, horrible coffee, bad(microwaved) peach cobbler. It sucked. $ 5 small portion of cardboard cobbler, $ 2 stale coffee. No refill even offered. Dirty restrooms with paint peeling off the wall. Never again.

We stopped here on our way back to DFW because of the Unilocal reviews. The décor is great with a country and sports theme throughout. TVs to watch the games and a full bar as well. The service was very good. Refills came when needed but we weren’t bombarded. Our server was very nice, knew the menu well and had the attention you’d want to receive. On to the food… It was very good! Had the ckn fried chicken, grilled veggies, fried okra. Chicken was cooked perfectly, juicy inside with a crunchy crust outside. Gravy was fantastic. The grilled veggies(squash, zucchini, carrots) were excellent; they mop them in Italian dressing for added bonus flavor. Fried okra was typical and probably not done in house. The other folks with me also said there meals were excellent. Will eat here again if in the area.

YUMMY. We were in the Hillsboro area to attend a Toastmasters meeting and decided to meet at Lonestar Café for our meeting. They have a wonderful meeting room that is quiet. All i can say if you can’t find something to eat on their menu, then you’re way too picky. My wife had the chicken strips and I had the homemade meatloaf. Both of our entrees were very delicious. There were 12 in our party and everyone loved what they ordered. Our server took excellent care of us during our visit.
