Try Bateeni’s on Arlington next to the K&W and Firehouse subs. For the same price you’ll get far better food. And faster. Marathon is okay. A great location is probably their key to profitability. The environment is pleasant. There’s no table side service and the kitchen has been unreasonably slow for years. The food is what you’d expect from State Fair greek-food vendors. It’s a gyro yes. But it’s not Greek. At Marathon’s you’re not going to break the bank nor are you going to find a deal. I guess the best way to describe it is as the most generic Greek food in town. Head to Bateeni’s instead.

I have lived in Greenville for 6 years and just now tried Marathon. I tried the kabobs and was pretty impressed. I got it to go on lunch, will be visiting the restaurant again and dining in.

Marathon has incredible food. I love the gyro. Have are in and got take out and it is always insanely good. The restaurant itself is stuck in the 80’s but it’s kind of endearing.

This is a Greek restaurant that has been around for as long as I’ve been in town.(About 25 years) I hadn’t eaten here in about 20 years for no reason other than its location isn’t an area I frequent. At the suggestion of my coworker we had a quick lunch here. I ordered the steak and cheese sub and French fries. The sub was very fresh and tasty. The fries were cut thick and tasted fresh as well. I also had tea. They give you a cup and you get it yourself. The tea was fresh. They also had fresh thick lemons to put in your drink which was nice. The ambience is somewhat dark and dank and the food was served on styrofoam plates but that wasn’t a big issue at all. Pricing was average $ 9.00 for my meal. We originally ordered pick up but decided to eat in when we got there so maybe that is why the food was in styrofoam. I will definitely return to try the gyros which I remember being excellent when I went there so long ago.

It took us from 1979 until today to share a Gyro and a Reuben with my wife here at Marathon after hundreds of trips to Greenville to visit our five ECU children. Our bad! We’ll be back! The food was great, the prices were right, and the staff were glad to have us! We came for lunch and the place was really busy(always a good sign). Ignore the negative reviews. Most people are way too critical…

Service slacking and food sucks. Sent back two entrees. Grew up in Greenville and local business owner and do not advise this place to anyone.

So disappointed. From out of town and had a taste for Greek. The gyro platter had NO feta or olives and only TWO pita triangles. The Greek salad had only iceberg lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes. I’m sad I didn’t check it before I accepted the take out bag.

Way too slow. Don’t come if you don’t have 30 minutes to wait for a sub, even when it is on special. It shouldn’t take half hour to get a sub. By the way, the décor… the 1970’s called and wants their wood paneling and nasty old ferns back. While on the subject of the ’70’s, I think you could catch a nasty case of the clap in their bathroom.

I have no idea what all of these negative reviews are about. I love Marathon and I will be borderline suicidal if they ever close. My girlfriend and I eat here almost weekly. I get the Romano Special and she’s had just about everything on the menu-twice. I can’t tell you exactly what is in the Romano Special(chicken, cheese, peppers) that makes it the best sandwich I’ve ever wrapped my mouth around-but I crave it. I’m getting jittery thinking about it now. My girlfriend has loved everything she has even ordered. The pitas are amazing. The staff has never been anything but friendly and efficient. Despite looking like a bunch of stoners-all of the employees seem to work hard and take pride in a job well done. To those who had to «wait forever to get noticed”-there is a bell right on the counter.

I’m not sure what i was expecting, but Marathon was a disappointment. It was dark and dirty and looked like it was pieced together from other fast food chains. The food was ok for fast food style greek food. I love greek food and this left a lot to be desired. I won’t be returning any time soon

The pita was some of the best I have ever had! It came out hot and fresh, and the hommus that came with it was delicious also. This is a restaurant where you go up to the counter to place your order. The menu on the board above the counter doesn’t tell you much, so grab a paper menu next to the register when you go in. They have a decent sized selection of bottled beer for this type of restaurant. The food and beer is priced well, and you get a lot for what you pay. I was stuffed before I even touched my side salad. Total, splitting an appetizer, buying a bottled import, and ordering the Marathon platter, my bill came to an even $ 15. The platter came with pork tenderloin, which did not look like I expected, but it was good. I preferred the lamb in the gyro my friend ordered though. The rice was seasoned, and I enjoyed it, but I could see how others would be turned off, because it was wet. They give you a lot though, and the platter came with half a pita and a salad. Everything my friend and I ate was good, but honestly the pita and hommus would be enough to bring us back even if it wasn’t. The plates and silverware were styrofoam and plastic. That doesn’t really bother me, but some of the meat comes on skewers, and it is hard to remove it with a plastic fork. The interior could use a little sprucing up. They have these tables with orange chairs that were kind of uncomfortable, but they also had these more oriental looking chairs that were woven and had upholstery that were nice. And tons of plants. All in all, the décor was kind of random, but charming, besides this isn’t a restaurant where the atmosphere is really the priority.

Marathon is great. The prices are affordable and the food is really tasty. It seems like the negative reviews are mostly because you have to order at a counter and fix your own drink. Really? Don’t be lazy.

Food was okay. We did not realize we had to order from the counter, so we sat for five minutes waiting, no one else in sight. Once we went to the counter we had to shout to the back to het someone’s attention. It took a long time to get the food. The gyros meat was crispy on both sides like it was not shaved off fresh like I have experiences in other Greek restaurants. The rice was saturated, mushy almost. It had a good flavor but the texture was off putting. The carpet was smelly and the décor left a lot to be desired. I wouldn’t hurry back there, but it is better than no Greek food at all.

the most absolute worst Greek food i have ever had, ice cold dolmades, and piping hot baklava… and all was served on styrofoam plates… and plastic silverware… really??? and i had to beg someone to acknoledge the fat that i was in the place… not to mention that i had to beg for a menu… and after i ordered a beverage and a appitizer, and the app was givien to me i was presented with thte bill… i hadnt aske for it nor was i ready… i hadnt ordered my entrée at this time either… this place is ready to close… dont know why it hasent yet… food was the worst, service was even more hidious, and the inside was totally dirty and so outdated, that Clark Gable would have said… dam this place is old! I am not usually so hard on a place but i have to speak the truth, espeacialy since i told the young cluless man that i worked a Greek place for 3 years… an as a manager at that! STAYAWAY!!! The food wasn’t bad, and I could be convinced to get takeout in the future. It’s oriented toward the college market. Order at the counter, they bring out food on unsustainable disposable plates, plastic forks, etc. Probably the best greek/Mediterranean place in Greenville, but that isn’t much. Bottom Line: a cheap takeout option in Greenville…

Every time a greek place opens it has already failed… Marathon is all we need. Lentil soup… yeah Marathon has got it. I liked their fries… in fact it is a mountain… you order fries for two… you best have four friends with you. I hear good things about the pita cheeseburgers but I will always love gyros… One of the greatest places to eat in Greenville on a budget.
