Super good. I had sourdough pancakes. The eggs cooked perfectly. Hubby had cornedbeef hash made from scratch. Great great breakfast. Definitely coming back

SO disappointed with Charlie’s this a.m. Altho they looked busy from the outside it was no where near as busy as I thought it would be! We saw empty tables all throughout our meal, so being busy was NO excuse for the lousy service we had this a.m. The waitress just did NOT even look our way! Took our order and delivered it bur never checked back to see if we needed coffee refills and even after we Asked for refills we didn’t get them! Tried to flag her down and couldn’t get her attention finally another table told her we needed help! ALL the food was lukewarm at best! The egg whites were not done! The Peppermint hot chocolate didn’t have hardly any IF any peppermint in it! I don’t expect we’ll go back there any time soon!

The food is great at Charlies Café. They have great service and you can also get food to go. I think the price is great for the quality of food you get.

Stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Place was packed so we waited a bit before being seated. I didn’t notice the bar when we were checking in, but sitting there might have been a faster option. It seemed that we were a bit lost in the crowd. We were offered and served coffee promptly, but then left for a considerable time before a server came for our food order. The food came in a reasonable amount of time, and was nicely presented. I had the Cook’s choice breakfast, substituting pancakes for toast. My date had the Bacon Spinach Benedict. Both meals were quite tasty. The pancakes had the perfect amount of fluff and the bacon was thick cut and delicious. I thought the Benedict was original, but not too far stray from the traditional bene. All in all. food was great, service was meh. We’ll probably give Charlie’s another try, but maybe on a day without time constraints.

I adore Charlie’s café. Service has always been very attentive and warm. The girls all seem like they enjoy being there.(I’m not a morning person so it’s nice to count on a smile) the menu is surprisingly unique for a classic diner, offering lobster benedicts, lingucia and eggs, chorizo scrambles, and a bacon/pecan waffle. They also allow a lot of options as your breakfast side, rather than just home fries you can choose fruit, toast, pancakes, a bagel, or even biscuits and gravy(for only an additional $ 1.25!) The western theme is cool, and the creepy maniquin guy sitting at the bar always makes me smile. Although the location and outside appearance isn’t 5 star– who cares? They deliver. Literally and figuratively. Use waiters on the go. Anyway I’m finishing my bacon Benedict with tomatoes and spinach, just can’t stop enjoying the hash browns… Thank you Charlie!

Pretty good breakfast and lunch items. Pretty average traditional menu(biscuits and gravy, eggs, burgers, etc) but the few times I’ve been in it has been very satisfying comfort food. Nice diner environment also. Bloody Mary’s served(with wine based vodka,) but bloody Mary’s none the less. Always a plus when coming in for a brunch. Customer service needs some work. Seems like once your food is to you they don’t check up on you and they could use a burst of energy. Other than that it is a nice little diner to get breakfast

My husband and I have been coming to Charlie’s for the past year and a half. We have tried several of the restaurants in the area that serve breakfast and we keep on coming back to Charlie’s because they have the most consistent fresh food served hot. It is always so satisfying. My fav is the Cowboy Omelet and my husband likes the Special, Corned Beef Hash & Eggs, and some Skillet dish that I can’t quite remember. Can hardly wait to go back. Keep up the good work. We really appreciate all that you guys do.

Friday September 12, 2014 Came in today for some extra thin pancakes and for the second time, the waitress graciously asked the cook and the gentleman said he’d be happy to make them for me. That’s the second time in as many weeks. First time I had sour dough, this visit regular. For my tastes the sour dough pancakes are the tops. One other mention; Charlie’s bacon is the best of any restaurant in Grass Valley bar none. And I have had bacon with breakfast in every café in this town and Charlie’s is the best. Great little place and fine service.

Warning it seems this place is under new management. Pre-arranged a business lunch here and was assured that we would be able to dine in and get back to our seminar in an hour. After being seated we waited for an hour and 15 minutes before we question if our food was ready. Our question was answered with an extremely rude argument from the«management». We calmly explained that we did not have time to wait and would have to leave before the food was served. The manager threatened us to call the police! Extremely rude. Totally unacceptable business practice and disgusting attitude for service. Please do not go here because of the new management. Even if this was a place that you thought you knew, it is not that restaurant any longer.

Have eaten here off and on for years, under different names and owners. Food is good. Not spectacular, but no surprises. Giving this 3 stars because for the price you would expect a little more. And service is… not awful, but not great. Often locating the waitress is difficult. And it is a small eatery with two main eating areas. But they always have a smile and are friendly. Just not always out in the table area. And as we learned today(which we learned other visits but thought it was not intentional), if you order food to go, be sure to bring your own cutlery. They won’t provide a plastic fork. Apparently eating an omelet with a fork is only to be done at their establishment. If you have the gall to order it to go, you should be eating it with your fingers, or however. Food quality seems to have gone down since last visit, but that could just be a one-off thing. Doubtful I will find out. There are other breakfast places in town with better customer service, and tastier food.

I measure my breakfast locations by levels of value I receive, and I always get more than my money’s worth here. Even when it’s slammed, they always acknowledge you(not as common in the restaurant world as you would think, these days).. . and one can clearly tell they do their very best to get food out as quick as possible. I’ve spoken with the owner when eating at the counter(mother owned and operated it before her), and her attitude and desire to deliver an experience(that compels you to return) is superb. I’m a bacon snob when it comes to preparation, and they’ve never disappointed.

So, I have a special place in my heart for the South Auburn Special with hash browns, scrambled eggs and sausage. I keep going there because of this meal in particular. It is hard to find tasty biscuits and gravy. But that really doesn’t excuse their complete lack of customer service. It just doesn’t exist. At all. The only time I go there is when I am calling in my order and taking it to go. Otherwise it is really not worth eating there. It takes 1.5 hours to get through your meal even if they are slow. The staff is never friendly and they don’t seem to care if you enjoy your food or the service. Charlie’s is a good olé boys business. It has been in this town forever and it will probably not change. Sad because they could be so much better. I’ve been in the food service industry for 11 years and if I was the boss there I would force customer service staff training.

When you go into a restaurant in Grass Valley you don’t expect a warm welcome… At least I don’t. Now when I come here, I don’t even have to give my order. Of course like every restaurant there are days when they are short and/or get overwhelmed but the food that I get is never below my expectations and I will continue to eat here!

Ironically this is one of the first UnilocalS I should have ever done since I have been eating here back since the Mister Charlies(CHARLIESANGELS) days but with the changes here and the rest of it I have kept my big mouth shut. Now I open it. But only half-way. Current staff and ownership should take it as a sincere compliment that they get 3 from me. C’mon guys. YOUWERESOGOOD and still sometimes are. I will never give up on this place. If you left your heart in the real Grass Valley and had to come back to find it, it’s right around here… still… somewhere…and this is a fine place to eat, despite it’s more recent shortcomings. I will leave it at that. A vague and abstract review I know, but that’s how I roll. This time only.
