Alexanders is a fabulous restaurant. Much of the food is locally sourced. The venue is an 18th century historical home. Staff are welcoming and attentive. There is lots of natural light, and you have the option to dine outside on the verandah in nicer weather. Prices are reasonable for such a nice restaurant. Shrimp and grits are excellent. A Thai friend who is not fond of American food ordered the southern fried chicken and said it was the best. Brunch on the weekend is nice as there is a choice of breakfast and lunch items. We often linger with friends for brunch and are never rushed by staff. Alexanders definitely gets my 5 stars!

Wow! Yum! OMG! I couldn’t get enough of this place! Awesome old(talking built 1790 l) house turned southern food heaven in the quaint historic Buckeystown(yea, what a name!). Fried green tomatoes knocked the socks off of what I thought the dish was supposed to be! Perfectly fried drizzled with a cool and creamy bacon chive buttermilk sauce. Chicken and waffles I thought I should have syrup with but so glad I decided to trust the house. The tomato bacon country gravy that adequately smoother my(again perfectly) fried chicken breast and savory waffle completely blew my mouths mind! I can’t even compare it to another flavor I’ve had. The over night coleslaw was a perfect match to the creamy gravy with a mustard(?) vinegarette. I could have sat and ate all day! My husband had a cheese burger with fresh crisp lettuce, tomato and onion and of course cheddar cheese on a big fresh bun. Medium rare came out the perfect color of browning pink and was satisfyingly juicy. I wish i had left room for dessert! They let you walk around the residence if you wish, which we should have done before paying the check so I could have tested the sweets they prepare.

The most amazing barbecue I’ve ever eaten. The service was a bit slow but well worth the wait. We’ll go back.

I really don’t get why this place has awesome reviews. I went for brunch, good menu, reasonable prices. I got the Buckey’s omlette with fruit salad and crispy potatoes. The potatoes were way too fried, and the fruit«salad» was a small cup of pineapple. Food was standard. Nothing special.

We sat on the outside deck, had a reasonably priced drink and a family meal with our group of 6 Co works. If u want a setting that is a little off the beaten trail with good food I would try Alexander’s out. I will be back

With the good Unilocal reviews I really expected more. Came here for Sunday brunch around 11 and was seated right away. The restaurant is in a very quaint colonial house and it makes you feel like your in and B&B. The brunch menu was fully focused on eggs Benedict and bacon/ham and there were some lunch options like salads and sandwiches. We got the Alexander’s Benedict which is the usual but with fried green tomatoes and the hollandise sauce has bits of bacon and French toast. The former tastes fine and the French toast was nothing memorable and kind of soggy. We got home fries as a side for both dishes and it was sad… the potatoes were good but wow did they skimp out; literally got a teaspoon worth with the eggs… it was embarrassing. There is nothing to eat off of the brunch menu for a vegetarian aside from the French toast. I’m not a vegetarian but I don’t eat bacon and everything was bacon oriented. Also, another couple next to us asked for freshly squeezed OJ and they didn’t have it, only bottles… come on who does brunch and doesn’t have fresh OJ?! I understand their Target audience is older people(based on the crowd and menu), but honestly that audience will not be around forever and they need to do something to their menu to impress the next generation. Finally the bathrooms were disgusting and smelled horrible. I understand that the building is old but that doesn’t mean the toilet has to be stained from the inside and that the sink is beyond dirty and has disgustingly discolored yellow grout.

Great southern comfort food. Best fried green tomatoes ive ever had n ive had plenty!!! Wed nights is family night too…16.99 per person for southern fried chicken… which by the way is even better than family meal that everyone raved about! And soup n like 5 sides with refills!!! Great food at a great deal!!!

Hidden, rustic gem. Great for a date night. The atmosphere is great, and the staff is great. My only wish is that the menu was extended slightly. My wife and I will definitely return.

Disappointing. Though we had a reservation our table wasn’t ready when we arrived; once were finally seated we found the service inattentive and had to wait some time to place a drink order. Part of the attraction for us was the quaint ambience of the facility: a sprawling 18th century home built by one of the Buckey brothers, the founders of Buckeystown, but that ambience proved to be largely illusory. Tables are crammed into what at one time would have been the parlor and drawing rooms. Several accommodated rather large parties — as many as 12 people — and the noise level was worse than that of a typical sports bar during a playoff game. Not the refined dining experience we were expecting. The food was at best mediocre. Pumpkin biscuits were bland; what little taste they had was disagreeable. The pot roast was overcooked: better versions can be had at Denny’s and Bob Evans. The shrimp dish was accompanied by a runny cream sauce over a bid of sticky grits. The fried chicken was the only success: thin and crispy on the outside, succulent within. Not a place we’d revisit.

This was our first trip to Alexanders. The place it nice and cute, little on the loud side as more people came in. We were at Sunday Brunch right at 11am. We both loved the Pork Boudin Balls and we were both not a fan of the fried green tomatoes. They were not bad, we have both just had those other places that were better. I got the Chicken and Waffles and the chicken was very good and the waffles were Ok. The country ham-tomate gravy was very good. I loved the Pickled Mushroom Barley salad for a Side. My wife hass the Buckey’s Omelet which was very good. The service was very very good, everyone was on top of their game. We both really liked our experience. Did leave with a «wow» feeling we will return, need to try lunch and or dinner. I would recommend it to other and if anyone said lets go, I would.

This review is NOT about the food, but rather about a ridiculous experience on our second visit to this place, yesterday: Seated 12:45pm, ordered two appetizers(sliders) and a side of fries at around 1:00pm. At 1:35, we were still waiting and everyone around us who arrived after us had already received their food. Waiter told us he would check(wasn’t he wondering himself!?). He reported back that the chef is alone in kitchen and it would be 5 more minutes. 10 minutes later, at 1:45, we asked again, but this time he came back saying sorry, the chef«lost the ticket»! Terribly sorry, he said, the MEALWOULDBEONTHEHOUSE and it would be 5 more minutes. Finally, at 1:55 we received our two appetizers and fries, ONTHEHOUSE. My wife told him she wanted an apple cider, which he promptly brought out, and he said«this is ALSO on the house». Finally, we ordered two servings of ice cream. Then came the shocker — the check! And only the cider and ice cream were on the house! I asked and he said, no, only everything AFTER the food was on the house. He wouldn’t budge, so we made a big stink to no avail and finally paid to just get out of there since our kid became bored. No manager, or maitre d’ in sight, just a bunch of waiters and an overworked chef. We will not be back.

Chef Chris Smallwood is a god among mortals. He is one of the best chefs in the Frederick area and beyond. Also very humble, charming and will personally come out to the dining area to chat with guests. Fried Chicken– To die for! Some of the best fried chicken in the known universe. Fried Green Tomatoes– Perfect! That smoky sauce is amazing. Shrimp and Grits– OMG! Best version I have ever eaten. The bacon in the cream… wow! Overnight Cole Slaw– This is magical. How can food be this good? She Crab Soup– So creamy, so crabby. The touch of roe is brilliant. I can go down the entire menu and rave about everything. Lunch, Dinner, Brunch. Everything is delicious!

My husband and I came here for Sunday brunch and it was very good. I was really happy to see that there was other stuff on the menu besides eggs and French toast. Of course, we had to try the fried green tomatoes that everyone is raving about, and indeed they were delicious. My husband got the chicken and waffles, and they were accommodating towards his request to waive the gravy in favor of some maple syrup. I got the salad with brisket on top. He really liked it but said he could’ve used another piece of chicken. My salad was nice enough, the brisket was good(not that I’m an expert on that sort of thing or anything). The cinnamon rolls that they gave us were absolutely unbelievable. That was definitely the highlight of my meal. If, by chance, we ever find ourselves in Frederick around Christmas time, I will try that buffet.

I am so in love with this charming little place! It’s located in a beautiful old house reminiscent of a B&B, but the ambiance is fairly casual. Service is always on point and there are so many memorable meals it’s hard to pick favorites, but here goes nothing. Fried green tomatoes: these are so amazing that I’ll go for the all you can eat fried chicken just so I can have all you can eat fried green tomatoes, which are included(or were when we went). This doesn’t seem like somewhere I’d think of ordering BBQ, but they really kill it. The Carolina Style with overnight coleslaw is my favorite. I’m not wild about the she-crab soup, but it’s probably for the best that I don’t want to devour literally everything on the menu. My FIL ordered it last time we went and it was a little salty and seemed light on the crab.

We loved it. The setting is classic«classy» — old white mansion with lots of original details and antique décor, really perfect for a restaurant specializing in Southern cuisine.(But be careful of the uneven walkways and steps without railings!) Apps: Brisket/pimento sliders would be enough for a light meal all by themselves. The house salad was a large mix of field greens, bacon, chopped egg, and tiny cheddar croutons. I chose the garlic/chive dressing based on a review and wasn’t disappointed. Entrees: His prime rib was butter-knife tender. My fried chicken was excellent and I was shocked to receive an entire half-chicken, considering the more than reasonable price. Leftovers made for a great lunch the next day. Sides: Scalloped potatoes were delicious comfort food, green beans with a smoked tomato sauce were also yummy. Dessert: He had bread pudding and I had nutella ice cream — neither«wowed» us but were certainly very good. All this food, plus 2 glasses of wine, was less than $ 100 with a generous tip for our excellent waiter. We’ll return soon!

This restaurant truly deserves 5-stars. A true definition of a hidden gem. The service was excellent. The prices were reasonable. The food was delicious. The ambiance and location adds to the charm. Our table ordered the she crab soup, fried chicken, boudin balls, fried green tomatoes, and Mac and cheese. All were very good especially the fried chicken and Mac and cheese. See pictures for more info.

My friend and I didn’t realize they closed at 8pm on Wednesday night and we were running late for our reservation at 7:30. They were still willing to serve us… As we walked in at 7:59pm.(we felt a little bad but so glad we decided to stay) We started off with sweet potato biscuit with molasses butter. That was delicious! We got crab soup, crawfish fritters, fried green tomatoes, and the fried chicken with 2 sides(mashed potatoes and green beans) to share. The fried chicken was the best I’ve had in awhile. It was crispy and flavorful. For dessert, we got the sweet potato pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The chef also gave us 2 of their cookies that were just made couple hours ago. Wow. Everything was amazing! Everything tasted delicious. Even with sharing everything, we had leftovers and I can’t wait to have them later! We are so glad to have made the trek here. It really felt like home cooking and the portion was big. The service was great too! Everyone was so personable and friendly. I can’t wait to go back and try out the brunch and other things on the menu!

My mouth was watering just thinking about writing the review for this place. LOVEEE! Actually, I like to recommend Monocacy Crossing to people visiting FDK(instead of what EVERYONE else recommends, Volt) but now that I’ve been here, it ranks up high as one of my favorite places in the Frederick area to go for a nice dinner! First off, can I just say that the entire menu was pretty much nom, nom, nom. I wanted it all. I settled with the she crab soup(i had to omg) and it was amazing, as she crab soup tends to be. My brother ordered the crispy boudin balls(which by the way are basically fried balls of pork goodness) I only had half of one, because I was basically pigging out on my soup and free bread… but I probably could have eaten the entire thing out of gluttony, had I been wearing stretchy pants. As if it couldn’t get any better, I had the«crispy skin salmon with pepper jelly glaze»(as described on the menu) with two sides(mashed potatoes and green beans because hello… not trying to be TOTALLY unhealthy now) and everything was so good, I seriously cleaned off the entire plate. Two people in my party attempted dessert, but alas, I did not. For I was already full and laying back in my chair saying«ahhhh I have a food baby!» I’d go back. But I’d save up my calories and prepare for an evening of amazing food eating(and honesty at amazing prices)

We went here for a date night, and I’m conflicted about whether it’s 4 stars or 3 stars… so we’re rounding up tonight. I LOVE the building itself– it’s an old home that reminds me of the houses down in Richmond– high ceilings, pocket doors, floor to ceiling windows, corner cabinets… it made us homesick to go back to RVA… Our waiter was a casual fellow, who recommended the special, which was a meal served family-style that started with fresh rolls, soup and appetizers, then included pulled pork, fried chicken, greens, overnight coleslaw, mac and cheese, and green beans… it was a lot of food. It reminded me of Tanglewood Ordinary… though the quality of food at Alexanders is nowhere close to Tanglewood. The sweet potato rolls were good– subtle, still tender and light, with just a hint of sweet potato. The butter that went with it was sweet, and a nice complement. For the appetizer we got fried green tomatoes, which were undercooked and should not be on the menu until someone comes up from the south and does a review session on how to make them for the kitchen.(I know that sounds harsh, but come on– this is a southern restaurant and that’s a classic dish… it’s also really hard to mess up, I’m not even sure how they managed to do it… there was something wrong with the spices they used. Horribly, horribly wrong.) Our soups were more successful– Brunswick stew and she crab soup. Mine had a lot of shells in it, but good flavor, and my husband enjoyed his stew. Let’s just hope the main ingredient wasn’t squirrel. The main course was mostly positive– I didn’t care for the pulled pork, I thought it was chewy and bland, but my husband liked it. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and relatively moist on the inside, though the batter they used for the frying needed some fine tuning– it was grainy, and tasted a lot of celery salt. Didn’t stop me from eating two pieces, so take away what you will from this… The coleslaw was delightful, the mac and cheese was creamy and delicious, the green beans were great, and the greens were nice and vinegary. So overall I’d say the sides took the show. I was in the mood for dessert, because who doesn’t like dessert, but unfortunately there wasn’t one thing on the dessert menu that sounded good. It was basically chocolate cake or ice cream. BORING. The meal was $ 14.99 per person, easily the best value in the Frederick area for dinner. I’ll definitely try Alexanders again, and likely try the brunch… and hopefully they will fix the fried green tomatoes before I return…
