I had been meaning to try this place for a while after having an amazing soup, made by the head chef here, at the annual Empty Bowls charity event in Durham. When we went here for lunch the soup was not on the menu, but they had a nice selection of burgers/sandwiches and pizza. I tried the deep south burger with bacon and pimento cheese and a side of chips. It was well cooked and very good. The bread they use is also fantastic. My friend got the Mattie melt, which he also enjoyed. It was a little pricey for lunch, especially when they just take your order at the counter and bring it to you. That being said I’ll be back eventually to try the pizza or cheese steak.

I like this place. I had the Asian sweet potato chips and some wings. Both were very good. It has an interesting menu with lots of carbs… if you’re trying to low-carb, this ain’t your place. The service leaves something to be desired, but I can look past this since the food was so good.

Pizza is ok for NY style, it is a bit oily and thin, if I had to compare I’d say Randy’s is better but this beats large chain stores. The beer selection is good and the serving staff, ‘when’, you walk up to order is great and very friendly. The table wait staff is lacking, they give them too many tables to cover because they seem to be moving around a lot but serving no one. Seating is fine and abundant. Décor is minimal, think Subway and that is pretty much the same feel. Plenty of fun at this place, and plenty of noise during games on the TV, what you would expect from a pizza house. This last time I had a sandwich and I waited to review and the consistent theme on all visits was table service. I had to walk up each time for a new beer, they just get spread amongst too many tables. Desserts have been great and they have had good options. Will I come back, yes but only if I have extra time or order to go. Would I recommend … yes.

Compared to Mr B’s other place Six Plates the atmosphere at Mattie B’s is a bit generic. However, like many establishments in NC don’t let appearances fool you: this place has seriously good food. The homemade chips and toppings are amazing(a bit over salty so expect your rings to not fit the next morning) and the pizzas are some of the best in Durham. The burgers are also exceptional, although the more mainstream sandwiches(brats, Philly cheesesteaks, etc) while good are not above average. Wonderful rotating beer selection with lots of fun events to look up. If the atmosphere could be tweaked for the Durham hipster crowd I’m sure 5 star reviews would follow.

This place has so much potential! This is my second time eating here. First time we waited forever for a server to come greet us. Waited too long for drinks to be delivered this time. Service is just sub par. Food is great! Some of the best pizza I’ve had. As a former restaurant server I just have a hard time accepting bad service. On a positive note the food like I said is really really good! The chips are awesome. We sampled the«Lone Rider» chips; really good seasoning on the chips topped with cheese, bacon and scallions. My husband had the patty melt and said it was one of the best he’s had. Pizza is consistently very good and they have a VERY extensive drink list. Lots of unique beers! I would come here again but it’s definitely not somewhere I will frequent often. There’s only so much you can put up with for the sake of good food!

This is one of the best family places in the Triangle. No secret that it’s got great sandwiches, unique«artisanal chip» offerings, and a craft beer menu that is one of the best in a beer-snob town like Durham. It’s got a great stripped-down atmosphere, great for that«let’s grab a quick one,» or the post soccer-game team get-together. No pretense, it’s literally the neighborhood public of Woodcroft. It also happens to be one of the best places in the Triangle to watch Euro-football, with, as best I can tell, subscriptions to all of the top Euro-league feeds. If there’s a championship going on, the place is packed, so get there early.

Went for the first time a couple weeks ago and really enjoyed the food! They had so much that looked good on the menu that it was hard deciding. My boyfriend and I split an order of the chips for an appetizer and a pizza for the meal. The chips were topped with pimento cheese, bacon, scallions, and served with ranch for dipping. The pimento cheese was really good but there was not a lot of it and I thought the chips were a little overcooked for my taste but still good with all the toppings. At first I thought it was a little expensive for a medium pizza, but it was HUGE! We ate on it for days, so well worth it. We got a pizza topped with pepperoni, banana peppers, ranch, bacon, maybe? I don’t remember all of the toppings, but it was delicious. You could see them rolling out the dough in the back and it came out hot and fresh. I am definitely going back for pizza. The service was a little weird. Our server took our drink and food order, but apparently after you get your initial drink you are on your own to get up and get refills from the machine. That is fine with me, but I wish someone would have mentioned that before I sat with an empty cup for several minutes. Other than that the service was quick and friendly. They have a nice beer selection that I would love to go back and check out, we just weren’t in a drinking mood that night. The décor is really cool and different too and they have a nice patio. There are very few sit down options in that area, which is where I live, so I am glad I know this is here now. Will be back soon!

We stumbled upon Mattie B’s on our way back to Lexington. Saturday night and everywhere we had stopped before here had an hour + wait. My boyfriend pulled into the shopping center where Mattie B’s is located to see what he could pull up from his memory of this area. We were both hungry so I suggested we just stop in here — there had to be something we could find that we’d like. Talk about a serendipitous moment! The atmosphere is super chill, and I like the décor of graffiti on the walls. When we sat down we were presented with an extensive beer list that was awesome and the food menu looked even better. We settled on the Thai chips for our appetizer and wow, so good. The spicy guava sauce rocked! We both got the Lamby Joe’s — what turned out to be phenomenal lamb and choritzo sloppy joes on the best bun I think I’ve ever had in my life. I got that accompanied by the southern belle chips — sweet potato chips with a brown sugar drizzle, mini marshmallows and pecans, accompanied by the spicy guava sauce — SOGOOD! Once we move to Durham, this place is going to be top on our list to visit way more often!

Just stepped in on a Tuesday night at 9pm & some guys who had been seated previously were waving their hands trying to get the server’s attention. Is that a sign? We shall see. Our beverage order was taken and delivered very quickly. Several yummy draft beer options(Tuesday is draft night). Food arrived very quickly. The portions are more than generous. One cheese pizza slice was at least the size of two slices anywhere else and had a really nice NY style thin crust. Philly steak was the best I’ve had down here in NC& their homemade chips are great. Caesar salad was huge, delicious, and the pickled shallots made it even better. Definitely seems like a fun place to hang out with several friends for drinks. Outdoor seating area is pretty cool. I will totally be going back… and bringing friends.

I recently moved down from Boston to Durham. With this said I am on a whirlwind tour of the food scene locally. My wife and I went to Mattie’s and really enjoyed the down to earth atmosphere. Sports bar with a soccer twist, jerseys and banners on the walls, and televise the EPL on Saturdays(which I’ve had a hard time finding places who do this). We got the home made chips(6 platter) with basil and tomato on top, these were phenomenal. Then came our pizza, thin crust a little chewy, if you like this style of bar pizza this your place. They have outdoor dining as well with a projector streaming all the big games. Check this place out

This was my first time here but i do plan to come back despite my 3 star review. Mostly because there are so many chips and chip toppings to try out! I imagine my initial rating will change pending future chip tastings. This round I tried the Thai flavored chips and I liked the sweet but savory mix. I wish the coconut strips were thick and flaky. Maybe because I’m a huge coconut fan. I also tried one of the pizzas. I do not remember the name but it has a chipotle ranch on it that made it interesting! The pizza was a little too greasy for me and the cheese to red sauce ratio was not my favorite(I like more sauce, less cheese). Food seems like typical bar foods all around. The many chip appetizers certainly make it unique and stand out from the plethora of bars out there. The draft list was pretty decent. I was there during a Ballast point tap takeover and I like the Sculpin so I was quite satisfied. I like the casual, sporty atmosphere. The room acoustics could be better. I struggled to hear conversation at my booth and it wasn’t even a crowded, busy time of day. Overall, I rate it a 3 with intentions to return soon and re-evaluate.

This place is my go-to-place to watch games for sure. Location: close to south point but on the other side, MB is located at the corner of a strip mall. The decoration gave me a feeling that this is a chain restaurant but nope I was wrong. When I came in, there are about 8 hD TV for current sports games. Service: there is no servers at this place. You have to come to the front desk, pick up menus and order your food. The owner is moving fast but pretty much not much interaction with him Food: huge portion. If you are very Hungary, you should come here. The small size pizza is like large in other place though they serve NY style pizza. We had grand ma love pizza, which tastes nothing but dough. I dislike it. The prairie chips is chips topped with one piece of cheap cheese and buffalo sauces. Someone mentioned the chip is worth to try, again I doubt it. Salad is humbug portion. But that’s about it. Nothing special, nothing impressive. But with that amount of portion and sports game, I will come back.

We ordered out 3 pizzas. The BBQ chicken, pepperoni onion, and white sauce veggie. They had messed up the order on one of the pizzas and made up for it by throwing in an extra pizza and two free beers while we waited. The pizzas were fresh, and so good. The crust wasn’t as crispy as I usually like, but the taste if the pizza was more than worth it. I HIGHLY recommend stopping by here if you are looking for great artisan pizza with an incredible selection.

Whole lot of food Checked out the menu and was impressed so checked it out. The menu items seemed expensive, but i will address that later. For appetizer went with the southern bell chips. The chips had the salty/sweet dynamic going drizzled with honey and marshmallows. It was the star for the day. I had 2 pig run and 1 supreme slices of pizza as well as garlic knots. The slices were HUGE so were the garlic knots. They were new york style and pretty good, huge toppings just greasy. Im a sauce guy and it was not phenomenal so sticking with a 3. So make sure you come hungry, they provide a lot of food.

I can’t remember where I originally heard of Mattie B’s and am so glad I found out about this little gastropub tucked away in a shopping area on 54 in Durham. I have been here on three occasions now and I have noticed an improvement in the seating and arrival experience. There is no real host or hostess stand per se so you come in the door and have to work your way to the bar area. Tonight there was an area set up with menus on a music stand and a hostess so it was a lot more welcoming than just standing at the door and awkwardly waiting. You have the choice of indoor booths or tables, seating at the bar and watching the cooks hard at work, or outside. The menu has a great craft beer selection and also a few wine choices. The chips are a must-try and the toppings on the homemade chips range from simple ranch and nacho-style toppings to exotic Thai sauce with coconut flakes. I did notice that the menu has been revamped just a little because I could not find the Forrester chips with blue cheese and a sweet syrup on tonight’s menu yet the Thai chips were very close in taste. The pizzas are delicious and then there are also many sandwiches, burgers and hot creations to choose from. The Philly Cheese Steak is always a great choice and many of the sandwiches list the local farms and bakeries like Guglhupf that supply the breads or brioche buns. I also tried a bite of the Lamb Chorizo sandwich and it was very meaty and bursting with flavor. The service has always been great with really casual and friendly servers. There are also soccer jerseys on the walls that indicate it is also perfect place to watch soccer or World Cup games. If you are looking for superb bar food and a beer menu to match, this is it.

Funny that this update is a year later. Last night we wanted to pick up a quick and delicious pizza and I remembered the great experience we had with a Unilocal event. I realize it was a Friday and the place was busy but it took over an hour and then when I asked about the pizza it had been sitting out for at least 20 minutes and was cold by the time I got home. That’s just unacceptable for a $ 25 pizza. Also the customer service was terrible. I was basically shuffled around and then just asked for my credit card. There wasn’t any offer to help me decide or make a suggestion — it felt like it was an inconvenience that I was trying to order. It definitely didn’t make me feel like a valued customer or that they even wanted my business.

A lot of people enjoy this place, but I don’t get it. It is just a typical burger, pizza and sandwich place and I’m surprised that they and City Beverage and Town Hall haven’t canceled each other out. The food that I’ve gotten from here can be bested by several surrounding places for lower cost. Maybe I just haven’t gotten the right thing, but at this point I’ll save my money unless requested to get from here.

I love the idea of a restaurant/bar that has creative bar food. The chips here are wonderful and they also offer a wide variety of pizza, sandwiches and wing flavors. One thing I liked best about this place was that I ordered The Prairie Fire chips as my meal and they brought them out before the other food for my table was ready. I find this to be awesome because that keeps the chips from getting soggy before they get to our table. This great joint is in a plaza so don’t be afraid to check it out!

I recently went to Mattie B’s when my husband and I stumbled upon it in a shopping center off the 54. We both loved the atmosphere inside, very chill, mellow, and laid-back. I ordered the BALT with the potatoes chips, and was super excited and pleased with the result! It was delicious, and the sandwich was just the right size. The veggies, especially the avocado inside was very fresh and full of flavor. I hadn’t had a BALT sandwich before, so this one sets the bar pretty high. My husband had a beer from their gigantic list, and it was also very refreshing. I won’t hesitate to order one myself next time we go. Our server was very nice and provided great service. The kitchen accidentally brought out a duplicate set of fries, so they let us keep them! We will definitely be back again, and sit on their open patio next time :)
