Is this place really closed? I was just there two weeks ago. Really was excellent.

And I really wanted to like it… The server was fine but the service was slow… my cabbage wrapped sausage was mediocre, at best… I will continue my hunt in Denver for something that comes close to Uves or Eidelweiss in Colorado Springs!

It’s with great sadness that I update this review for my last supper at Café Berlin. I’m glad I was in town this past Sunday and just happened to see their facebook post stating that night would be their last night in business. I grabbed the BFF and we headed out for one last fantastic dinner at our favorite German place. Our server recognized me and even remembered my regular order! I felt so bad for her as she had also only found out a couple hours prior of the closing(and thus the loss of her job). I’m amazed at how well she powered through and took care of us. We started with the apfelschnapps. Oh so good. Apparently a case of schnapps went missing the night before so they were very low on supply. There was about 1⁄3 of a bottle left and our server happily reserved it for us and we very happily consumed the last 7 shots. We also got the very last kartoffelpuffer Café Berlin ever made. :(As usual, the rouladen was excellent. And there was enough for me to have one more German dinner tonight as leftovers. There was a sadness that hung in the air on this last night, but there was also somewhat of a sense of community. Everyone there was enjoying one last fling with a place we loved.

Good food. I can’t say how authentic German it is, but it was as good or better than any other German restaurant I’ve been to. Décor is really bland and not much German feeling, but it didn’t take away from the dining experience. Service was good. Location was good(if you’re downtown).

My wife and I started frequenting Café Berlin when it was located on 17th Street and happily followed them to 14th Street. We both spent several years in Germany with the military and love German food. We have brought out of town guests, local friends and business parties to this restaurant. It was one of our favorites. It is where we often spent our anniversaries and birthdays. With the move to the 16th Street Mall something happened; from our perspective the place has really taken a hit. The food isn’t as delicious, the service is poor, and the ambience reminds us of a food court. It is sad and disappointing; we have lost a favorite part of Denver. Last night was our third and last trip to Café Berlin. We both had schnitzels, my wife Rahm and I the Cordon Bleu. Both schnitzels were tough and chewy, but much worse was the sauce. It had no flavor whatsoever. The spaetzle was bland. The fried potatoes bland. Bland is the key descriptor here. I am so glad the table was equipped with a large set of salt and pepper shakers; they were in great need last night. Another thing we enjoy about Café Berlin is the beer. Not much of that last night. The service was very slow and the wait for a beer refill was punctuated by a lengthy stare at an empty glass. We finished up with a course of apple strudel; key word again — bland. More like a side dish than a dessert. It came with a serving of whipped cream which was very important as it provided the only sweetness to the dish. We are sad; we gave the new location 3 strikes, but unfortunately have seen no improvement. When we spend $ 100 for a meal we expect more.

I just found H.G. Wells«Time Machine.» It is at Café Berlin. One smell. One bite. Of the Cucumber Salad. So perfect. «Hi. Grandma.» «I love your cucumber salad.» Oh, back to 2013 now! I can’t believe it. I just went back in time…30 years. I’m German. Well, half. I grew up in Montana. And ate German food. This was incredible. So authentic… I’m almost speechless. Well, not quite speechless., I do talk a lot. Then the beer… a real Liter of Beer. And the Kartoffelpuffer(potato pancakes served with sour cream & homemade applesauce) Then the Rouladen(Beef rolls stuffed with pickles, mustard, sautéed onions and bacon, topped with sour cream gravy) Wow! Why is it so far from Parker? Oh, RTD goes there… ahhh.

Talk about a happy little surprise of a restaurant. Café Berlin put us into a good mood from the moment that we walked in the door. The hostess was quick with both a smile and a joke. The food was perfect and so was the beer. Definitely coming back here when we are in the mood for German food.

I really wanted to like this place. But again the food just wasn’t that great. Granted I only had the weinerschnitzel, but, for a german place, that should be the one plate that they should hit a home run on. It was very bland. The spaetzle was pretty good though as well as the cabbage. Unfortunately I’ve eaten at a really good german restaurant, and this place just pales in comparison too that. At the very least though, they have multiple varieties of Paulaner, and maybe at a certain point, you don’t really care what the food tastes like.

We had lunch a few months ago using a Google Offers deal. The food was okay. Service good. My husband liked everything he had. I prefer Helga’s atmosphere and food. I probably would not be back.

Great last minute idea! Looking for good food on a Saturday night & we found excellent! Jägerschnitzel w/red cabbage & Späetzel. Awesome choice to go with the Paulaner Octoberfest beer! If you want great German food. come to Cáfe Berlin!

Updating my review based on latest experience, in which we dined at Café Berlin recently with some friends. We made reservations per restaurant’s suggestion, expecting the restaurant to be packed. When we arrived there were no other tables seated. It did pick up a bit eventually, but we found this rather odd for a weekend evening. Our waiter was friendly, but the service was incredibly slow. By the time others customers were there we noticed they were finished eating even before we had received our meals(nothing out of the ordinary was ordered). I know German food isn’t the most flavorful of cuisine, but we have eaten here several times, and know what to expect. Nearly everyone complained afterwards about just how unimpressive and«canned» the food seemed. The pork was leathery, the jagerschnitzel was soggy, the daily vegetable was just plain gross. Also, the rye bread that is served before the meal was rather dried out. I am not ready to take Café Berlin completely off of my list, but since everyone in the rest of my party seem to be, I am not sure how soon we will return, and I think this is rather unfortunate.

We hadn’t been to Café Berlin since it moved to 16th Street, so we figured we’d give it a try for dinner last Friday night. It wasn’t especially busy, so we were able to get seated right away without reservations. We both started off with the cucumber salad, which was very good. We were a little disappointed that the German potato salad wasn’t available for dinner, since it’s one of our favorites in general. Next up, we both ordered the jägerschnitzel. Not very adventurous, I admit, but we both really like jägerschnitzel, so we figured we wouldn’t run out this way! It was very good. The portions seemed about right, though in general(given the portion size), the entrees seemed a little overpriced for what I’d call standard German food. Next time, we should probably be a bit more adventurous and branch out from jägerschnitzel, since a lot of other items on the menu looked pretty tasty as well.

Location — convenient location in City Center, right by the 16th street Mall. Inside lacked ambiance but was clean. Keep in mind that this is Café Berlin so no lederhosen or Bavarian kitsch in sight. But there were some displays of beer steins near our table. We called ahead to make a rez. But when we showed up, they didn’t have our name. They weren’t busy, but poor form in my opinion. Restrooms were spacious and clean. Plenty of seating at the bar for those just looking to drink or dine solo. Wait staff was pleasant and attentive. Food — Hubby and I have eaten German all over the US and in Germany. We cook German food at home too. So, this ain’t our first rodeo. Rye bread was brought out at arrival — quite dry. I like that all entrees come with a salad or soup(two options of each). Hubby went with cuke salad(sour cream dressing) and I opted for split pea soup. Loved the soup, house made. Cuke salad was crisp, good flavor, fresh dill. Entrees — Weiner schnitzel was bland, greasy, not crisp, didn’t have traditional puffiness(per hubby). Cabbage and fried potatoes were acceptable, standard for a US German restaurant. Rouladen was good flavor, slightly chewy. Lacked the full range of tangy, bright flavors you see in a good Rouladen. I also got the dumplings and daily veg(zucchini and tomatoes). Both were excellent! Best potato dumplings I have ever had, definitely housemade and the vegs were fresh and vibrantly colorful. We split the apple strudel for dessert. This was one of three dessert options, the only one made in house. Very good classic strudel, served with a thick whipped cream on the side. Worth saving room for and easy to share. Not the best German food we’ve had, but an acceptable option in Denver with a convenient location.

I got a Groupon Deal, and since my lady loves German food I thought this would be a great place to hit up for date night. Well, I’ll admit that at first I was not that impressed. The décor is a little shabby, and the interior doesn’t exactly scream«classy joint.» It’s a little musty inside, but to my surprise the girl said that this was actually more of what one might encounter in Berlin, a not-so-polished eatery that’s different from your southern(Bavarian) places. She’s lived in Germany, so I’ll take her word for it. I did notice that almost all the staff is actually German. Always a good sign to see in a German restaurant. What really saved this place was the food, though. We had schnitzel, we had bratwurst, we had chicken, it was all delicious. Add to that a liter of Paulaner from the draft, and we were feeling great. To top it all off, the house even gave us apple schnapps!

Wonderful meal, great service, and comfy restaurant. I called to make a reservation for a group — we were planning on seeing a show at the DCPA, and the woman who took the reservation was as friendly and accommodating as she could be. Even recommended a lot right across the street from the restaurant(two blocks from the DCPA) where weekend parking is $ 5. Thanks! I arrived first, and was seated immediately. Every staff member who stopped by the table that night was welcoming. One of our members was very late — over a half hour — and they rushed her salad out, and even managed to have her entrée served with ours. We may have waited a couple minutes extra(no worries, since we were all enjoying our salads so much), but they served everyone together. So great! The schnitzel wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but it was right up there. The mushroom sauce was amazing. I’ll definitely be back, to see if another schnitzel fits the rest of the restaurant, which would definitely be a five star! And, I’m looking forward to it.

Let me start with the bad since it is a considerably shorter list. The cucumber salad was swimming in the dill/sour cream«dressing» and the service started great but lagged periodically. That being said, the dill/sourcream dressing was pretty refreshing. On to the good. For starters the $ 8.50 for a liter(about 312 oz beers for those of you unfamiliar with the metric conversion) of Salvator Dopplebock was amazing. The spatzle needed a little salt and pepper(admittedly I put salt and pepper on most foods though) as did the German fried potatoes and the kind of snitzel I got. The kraut was outstanding and added a great acid bit when miked with the green peppers, onions, etc that came on top of my breaded veal. The décor is a bit, eclectic. Mostly German beer steins lining the walls but here and there was an Asian inspired piece that seemed a bit out of place. Overall, fantastic meal and the beer was great and priced right!

Like a lot of food from this region, the food is thick and buttery and rich and so, so delicious. Café Berlin is definitely a great choice for ethnic eats. Like other reviewers said, the staff can be pretty stoic but always helpful. I saw the owner(I think it was her, or a manager?) one of the times I was there. She was by the bar, waiting for and then greeting some regulars with reservations — always a good sign! My date and I started with the Kartoffelpuffer, or potato latkes. Very interesting. It was served with applesauce which I probably never would have thought of but was great! The applesauce helped cut the fat, I felt. I ended up having the Wiener Schnitzel(veal with lemons) and Date had Sauerbraten(beef with gravy… reminded me of pot roast). They were both really delicious but felt so heavy. For our sides we had boiled potatoes, sauerkraut, and red cabbage. The red cabbage here is so good and tasted so well-balanced. That is the only way I can describe it. Perfectly tangy and sweet and it was actually the thing that stuck out the most after I left! I wanted to bring a big jar home! This is a great place to check out, especially for those who have never had German food and are looking for new ethnic experiences without the heavy spices usually found in other cuisines. Date was Eastern European and apparently this was pretty authentic compared to what you could get in actual Berlin. I will have to come back soon and have that red cabbage again! I actually had to knock off a star because the food was just a little too heavy for me. So, so tasty but required a long walk after because of all that food!

As they say in Germany — Wenn Sie deutsche Küche mögen, ist dies der richtige Ort, um in Denver kommen! I checked this place out with my GF yesterday and it was overall a pretty good experience. It is located in the second floor of a building off of the 16th Street Mall. Contrary to the long held idea of raucous Bavarian pubs with sloshing beers and scantily clad bar maids, this was quiet and cozy and perfect for a quiet lunch for 2. We started the meal with a pair of Kartoffelpuffer(potato pancakes) that were dense and packed with flavor. Topped with apple sauce and sour cream, they couldnt be beat. I had Kassler Rippchen(smoked pork chop with horseradish sauce) with warm German potato salad and red cabbage. I thought the food was excellent, although the serving of pork was a little on the small side. The sweet and sour red cabbage was amazing and really lit up my palate. My GF had Wiener Schnitzel with warm German potato salad and spatzle. She complained that her meal lacked seasoning and flavor and didnt really enjoy it. I did try her spatzle and have to concur that it needed something to pop a little, like black pepper. The server had a German accent, which led to the authenticity of the place. I would go back for lunch or dinner, but I had to downgrade the rating because of my GF’s unhappiness with the meal.

BESTGERMANFOOD! Little hole in the wall place that you would not notice from the outside, but I was blown away!!! Split the sausage sampler and I’m not a fan of sauerkraut but this was amazing!(as was the 3 different kinds of sausage) Had a snitchel(sp?) in a cream sauce… every bite was amazing! The green beans and the potatoes(German style) were fantastic as well! WILLBEBACK!

This place is awesome! Best German food joint that I’ve found in the town! And of course, the beer is excellent! Who can beat a full sized liter availability of a full line of Paulaner? I went here two days in a row, and it was equally as pleasing both times. If you can repeat being impressed twice in two days, how amazing is that?!? The first night we started with a sausage sampler on sauerkraut, and the sausages were GREAT! The thing I was even more impressed with was the sauerkraut. It was so sweet and delicious even my wife, who hates sauerkraut, loved eating it. I had the jagerschnitzel for dinner with potato dumplings, more sauerkraut, and the cream of mushroom soup. Each item was equally as impressive and delicious as the previous. Secondly, I had sauerbraten, more sauerkraut, and green beans. Everything has it’s own unique flavor, and it’s nothing short of the best German food that I’ve ever come across anywhere in Colorado. This place is very hard to see, but the parking is very readily available. My only recommendation is call if you’re heading in late. Sometimes the foot traffic is very slow here, so I’ve seen them close down the kitchen up to an hour before regular posted hours. The service here is also great. The main boss lady is hilarious, and she will mess with you if you come separately from the rest of your party. She’s pretty hilarious.
