Best Sushi in Orange County! A must have if you’re visiting or a local! We have been going for years and it is always amazing. Incredible rolls and a great experience!

On my way back to San Diego and was craving for some good sushi. I stopped by this sushi joint and was so glad that I did. Heard the rave from my fellow San Diegans and they were right, the food was on point. From soy sauce to the rice and the fish, each component to my sushi dish was great. I ordered the Gen Kai special roll and the combo nigiri sushi. It’s truly a gem. I will definitely go back.

Love the poke bowls here, the flavors, vegetables and fish are amazing. The fish is very fresh too! But you don’t get that much fish in the poke bowl, I guess depending on the chef. I don’t know if they profile you and selectively put more fish sometimes and other times not, but you might as well eat at wow poki, where you have the option to ask for more fish

I base my sushi experience on 1 test… if they have good blue fin sashimi. and theirs is KILLER. also had the Dana Point roll and Yellowfin belly sashimi. I now know where I’m getting my sushi while I live down here.

We’ve been regulars at Gen Kai for 15 years. That’s 15 years at 3 times a month! What makes Gen Kai so perfect as a neighborhood sushi restaurant? 1) Irene — the best restaurant manager we’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. 2) Fresh — really fresh — fish. 3) Friendly, outgoing, experienced sushi chefs who have been there so long they have built a loyal following. What more can you ask for?

Still the best sushi house in town. Try the sushi burrito. The baked mussels are perfect every time. And I always get the Yellowtail cheek. Their happy hour menue in the dinning tables area is a great deal for the bento box and a bunch of other items… Everyone is friendly but not as much fun as it used to be when you could get your sushi chef a shot… I guess dunk sushi chefs and sharp knives aren’t a good idea. lol

I’m new to the OC area, and have been searching for some good sushi spots to satisfy the occasional cravings. I’ll admit, I’ve become a bit of a sushi snob after hitting some real great spots in LA, so I took my friends enthusiasm for Gen Kai with a grain of salt. I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised. The Screaming O! is probably my favorite. The seared tuna sashimi was very fresh and the ginger sauce that came with the dish was delicious. The Poki Bowl was also very tasty! My favorite appetizer was the Spicy Edamame; the roasted garlic sauce was delicious! Usually I’m a straight sashimi sort of girl. I often don’t even use soy sauce. So this was a nice change of pace to get some more saucy rolls and non-sashimi appetizers. Overall very tasty and would come again :)

The waiter wasn’t quite surly but was south of indifferent. The rolls were okay but nothing to write home about. Overpriced and the rolls didn’t come with a little cabbage salad, a bowl of miso or even a tiny side of edamame. I’ve had better sushi and gotten more for less.

Still my favorite in the area after all of these years. Place is getting a little beat up, but the sushi is still great and the lunch prices are still good.

I’m a regular, and when I say regular I really mean I’m there almost every Tuesday for lunch because I’m addicted. Literally. So, I’ve been shooting my mouth off about their delicious offerings to my token Korean friend(not really) and she decides to ditch one of her society events the other night to call me on my bragging.(She was in town.) We sit at the sushi bar and the chef does an admirable job impressing her with his chops(get it). She was particularly impressed with the spicy scallop roll. I think I’ve proven my point, we are mingling with the other guests and it’s time to get the check and go, right. But Nooooo. «Mamasan» as she is now calling herself has other plans. In Korean she orders an Oyster shooter and our new friends are saying they are to die for… back the train up. I don’t do oysters, let alone drink them. Why isn’t the sushi chef listening to me? Does nobody understand NOTHANKYOU! Peer pressure being what it is, I ended up trying the thing, eventually. Damn, it was delicious! Seriously tasty.(I even liked the oysters) Are they all like this? Ok, bring them on. I’m in deep trouble… I think I’ll be drinking lunch on Tuesday from now on.(You guys NEED to try them.)

I’ve always had a good experience here! I cant decide if this is my favorite sushi place in OC or if Jizake is better, its a tie! Love their mango roll and poke boll.

Just had the worst customer service ever. The sashimi has gone to crap. The quality of fish has gone massively downhill! The servers were high pressure. I’ve never stiffed a tip before but we were hurried out mid lunch. Avoid this place at all cost if you don’t like food poisoning. Sad this place has gone a far down hill recently. It was once quite good.

I have been eating here for a couple years now and food«sushi» is good for the area. The reason why I’m writing this is we have been having horrible service from the serving staff at the sushi(sushi chefs are great) but mean girl at the register ruins our experience every time. Basically stares at you while you are eating to try to get you out on on to the next person. The sushi chefs at the bar have to yell at the bus boys to get us more drinks and the lady at the register just watches everything go down without helping. My daughter spilled her water and the lady at the register watched and no lie did nothing! They should go to Nobu one day and watch how they treat and appreciate their customers with over the top service, smiles, and a fun environment. I think I’m over this place unfortunately :(

Came here because it was highly rated and I was in town for business. This place is not good. Low end fish and old carpeted floor left me with the impression that everything was cheap. I question anyone that has given this place two or more stars. There are incredible sushi restaurants in California, this is not one of them. Skip it.

We didn’t know what to expect, but the menu was really inventive with sushi rolls that were creative and delicious. The baked crab handroll, mango roll and pop shrimp roll were especially good. Our only issue was that the food was brought out as it was ready, so we got our sushi before some of our appetizers. Make a reservation for a table in the back, or wait online for the long sushi bar. I’m definitely going back!

This place is a hidden treasure in Dana Point. The food is incredible!!! I have never left unsatisfied. Food is very fresh and well-prepared and the staff does everything in their power to make your experience worth while. It’s good food at an affordable price without the pompous and pretentious aura of other Japanese sushi places. i’m getting hungry writing about this and remembering their delicious plates… see ya there. =)

I’ve lived in Dana Point for the past 24 years and had never been mostly because I always saw a line out the door and knew it was a tiny place, really didn’t want to be cramped. I finally tried it today, sushi chef greeted us right away, I thought nice! Lady at the register hiding around the corner had a long face and spoke in a very low voice, looked bothered when I told her I wanted a table but took us in quickly. She never smiled, threw the menus on the table. I will say she held the chair open for my daughter and then left as quickly as she came. Menus need updating, rather old and dirty. Place does feel small and crowded. Waitress came without a smile on her face and asked about drinks. Water was from the tap and had a certain flavor about it. When the waitress came back again she had no smile on her face, took our order and left. We thanked her but she was already gone. When the waitress brought one of our dishes she did crack a joke, we thought things looked brighter for a moment in terms of service, but after she dropped off the food she disappeared and never looked back at our table. Dishes came at the same time as the edamame. Food was good not bad. Dishes were not incredible they were just good. Dressing on Crunchy roll tasted like pure Mayo which killed the taste a bit but I avoided it. Overall I would probably go elsewhere. I’ve had better, in roomier restaurants with smiling faces.

This is one of our top 10 most frequented restaurants when we lived in south OC. The art was amazing, the fish were fresh, the lunch & happy hour values were awesome, and their Cali rolls were the tastiest, ever! Seriously, the best sushi value, period. We almost want to move back to OC, just based on this, our favorite restaurant, like EVER! For me, the poki bowl lunch totally hits the spot! Huge bowl with 8 pieces of the best Cali roll at the bottom, topped with seaweed salad, and an ample amount of sashimi! My hubby, he loves the sashimi lunch combo! I’ve heard rumors that the head sushi chief went to El Toro to open his own poki restaurant(stay tuned for the review) but for now, Gen Kai stays at the top of our list of places to visit when in SoCal.

Love this sushi place, the food always fresh and you get very generous portion of fish. I love the yellowtail sashimi and the salmon baja style was great.

I would’ve given this place 5 stars because the food deserves it, but we arrived there late. 15 min before closing although we were seated there were no smiles until we left . The chef was nice but lacked customer service or welcoming attention. His attention to detail was 100% on and the food tastes great, but again felt rushed to order and eat . If your going to let customers sit and eat at 15 till closing at least give them the same service as you would anyone else.

Einfach superklasse Sushi — sowohl geschmacklich als sich qualitativ und zudem auch sehr schön angerichtet ! Eine Portion reicht für den normalen Hunger völlig aus.
