I love this little Cottage on the Cove in Coupeville. My husband and I actually own a home in this lovely little town, however, until we’re retired, I doubt we’ll be able to live here full time. When we come onto the island to work on the house or visit friends we stay in the Cottage if it’s available. It sits just at the end of the actual town on Front Street. From the front door of the Cottage one can be at a fabulous breakfast spot(Knead and Feed, open at 8 or 9 a.m. depending upon the day), many great restaurants(Toby’s for pub food, Christopher’s for fancier fair, and others too numerous to name). Or, since the Cottage has a kitchen and dining table, one could choose to do some«grocery» shopping at the Red Apple Market, or at the Bayleaf, which is walking distance from the Cottage, and has a fabulous selection of wines, cheeses, meats, juices, breads, and chocolates(come early for the best bread selection, as loafs are delivered fresh daily). A little about the Cottage itself. There is a separate bedroom with a double bed and a loft leading to a twin sized mattress. The bed is soft, but very comfortable. If you, like me, love to have a cool breeze in the face as you sleep, and to awake to the sounds of the stones as they are rolled on the shore with each rise of water, there is a window next to the head of the bed on the cove side of the bed. The living room is a good size with an old but serviceable sofa, a very comfy chair, a coffee table, dining table with four chairs and extra folding chairs, and french doors that lead to the deck facing the cove. The bathroom is actually two little room, one with a surprisingly nice shower and a sink, the other with the potty. Excellent if someone wants to shower, and another in the party has, ahem, other needs. These rooms are off the kitchen, which is another room having all one needs(fridge, range/oven, sink, cutting boards, knives, pots, pans, dishes, etc…) to enjoy Bayleaf purchased goodies, pizza from the local place, or groceries prepared to save a bit of cash. However, if you like beer and mussels, don’t miss Toby’s(which might have been the very reason we bought in this town in the first place) — I’d say have breakfast out at least one morning, lunch at the Cottage, and hit restaurants for dinner. How fabulous is it that one is walking distance to so many fabulous places to eat and drink? No fear of having that extra glass of wine at Christopher’s when there is not driving to do after dinner. During the day, if it’s nice, drive over to the Port Townsend Ferry park the car along the street and walk on. Spend the day in Port Townsend shopping and visiting their cute museum. Or, if you a hiker or mountain biker head over to Fort Ebey State Park, or park near the Sunnyside Cemetery and walk the trail to look over Ebey’s Prairie and the beach below. Head down to the beach to look for Agates on sunny days… there is also a very nice museum in Coupeville itself, not to be missed. The Cottage on the Cove is the perfect spot for a stay on Whidbey Island. Oh, and if you’re one of those people that wonders about renting from someone named«Reverend» Barry, don’t worry. Barry is totally cool, he has great stories, and much like Chris in the Morning from Northern Exposure fame he is much more along the lines of «I became a Reverend by filling out the form in the back of the Rolling Stone.» Many years ago my husband and I decided to renew our vows in our back yard, we asked Barry to be the«officiant.» It was great. Barry also owns small roofing company and our friend Kevin named one of his Captain City Beers«Barry Burton’s Rooftop Red» in honor of our local, colorful friend. I’m giving this five stars and only one dollar sign, because for what you get this is a fabulous deal. You won’t be sorry if you stay here, enjoy a casual time, and«live like a Coupeville local» for a few days.

NOTCLOSED! At least as of early January 2011. Great place. Amazing. Call if you like cute cottages, in small towns, in a beautiful location, right on the water. Has TV, DVD player, games, books… fireplace was broken :(but heaters worked well. No internet. Completed my transaction solely over the telephone. Reverend Barry was prompt in returning my call and very kind.
