Love the pollo asado tacos, fish tacos and carnitas tacos! Excellent food, huge amounts of meat in the tacos and very fresh tasting. They are very efficient and always good food.

NEW OWNERS THE PAST 4 – 5 months!!! The food is FANTASTIC!!! Best breakfast burritos, perfect carne asana, carnitas are out of this world! REAL Mexican sour cream. REAL guacamole, authentic, delicious. Please disregard all previous reviews. This place has CHANGED!!! I encourage anyone to try and review, we have to change this 2 star rating!!! I have been going here for several years. I like their carnitas plate, fresh and not greasy. Not lots of fat either which is nice. I also love their breakfast burritos and rolled taco plate! I call ahead and get it to go and bring my carnitas plate to bingo. The only bad thing is all the people hanging over my shoulder wanting to have some. Consistently good!

If you want Mexican’t food this is the place. I was warned by friends not to try any Mexico Viejo… well the we’re right. Got a burrito and on the first few bites was decent. Then as I pulled away from my next bite a huge frickin hair was in it!!! Immediately went back to show them… the first thing they said was would you like another one on the house??? If it wasn’t for the father with his little girl inside I would have let them know what I truly thought about their «food». Anyways go to primos or Jorges for some bomb mexican this place sucks.

This place sucks! I wish I could like it cause it’s by my work but every time I go they screw something up and their carne asada burrito is $ 7.20! WTF! They aren’t nice either, they act like they hate life. Boo.

Going back in today was so much better. Late afternoon run in here was amazing. The service was great, the guy was super nice and food was great.

Can you give a place zero stars? I’m not sure how you can screw up Mexican food, but these guys did.
The beans were cold, the cheese wasn’t melty, and it wasn’t exactly cheap. The meat was also less than desirable in the taco plate and the rolled tacos. We were not impressed at all.
Also, they’re only open till 9pm, but maybe that’s for the best?
I don’t recommend it and wouldn’t go again.
The one star is for the salsa. That was good stuff. :)

I’ve eaten here twice just to give or another chance and it’s let me down BOTH TIMES first of all I think I could get a better bean and cheese burrito at ⁷⁄₁₁ and the crane Assad fries are absolutely terrible if u want to go to a good Mexican place with carney asada fries and good burritos go to nachos taco shop in San Marcos right next to San Marcos high school

Ordered the carnitas platter. The carnitas tasted rancid. I just don’t know why they would serve a product like this. I wish they would check out the comments on Unilocal as I really like having a good Mexican take-​out nearby.

In live in the condo’s directly behind this place. Its nasty. I mean really nasty. I have given this place multiple attempts. The most recently was the chile relleno plate. The chille relleno’s were cold. There is just no love to the food. I dont believe the owner cares about the customers tastes.

I don’t know what’s with the bad reviews. I’ve eating here a handful of times for breakfast and dinner and it seems about the same as all the other Mexico Viejos in the area. Good soft tortillas, and yummy Carne asada and Pollo asado. Its probably a 4-​star but I’ll offset some of the negativity. There must be a lot of picky people in that neighborhood or something

Horrible food! My burrito was almost frozen when I got it and that is how it’s been multiple times. The nasty grease that fell out of the burrito while I was holding it spilt all over my cloths and car seat. The food is disgusting compared to other Mexican food restaurants in the area. I wouldn’t recommend eating there

I usually go to the Mexico Viejo in Carlsbad (which is great!) but my friends and I were in the area of La Costa and decided to go to this location. We called our order in, only to find out when we arrived that they hadn’t started making it (they had no customers, so no excuse), the service was terrible as the guy taking my credit card wouldn’t stop watching telemundo long enough to look at me or say hello, the salsa bar looked like it hadn’t been cleaned all day, and to top it off the sub par product we received gave all of us food poisoning! After a day of absolute torture and gastro-​suffering I managed to find the strength to call them and kindly alert them of the issues of their food, I get told by the jack-​hole on the phone that if I don’t like their food then don’t come back! No apologies or anything, and no coincidence that all of us got sick within hours of eating there! There are many disgusting ways to give somebody food poisoning, and I’m sure that unlike the d-​bag who blew me off, the health department would love to hear from me. Don’t spend even a glancing look on this place.

I wanted to like this place as I just moved to the area and it’s close by. I ordered carnitas. The pork was not trimmed well and was kind of gross. The pico de gallo that was included was mostly onion and the guacamole wasn’t worth eating. I won’t be back and don’t recommend it for anyone. Service was fine.

Wow that was bad. My instincts said turn around the second I walked in the door. I ate the worlds worst burrito and probably have Hep C now. Avoid!

Solid burritos here. Good size. Can fill a big guy like me up. Great freaking salsa. Cucumbers at salsa bar cool off the heat. Different and refreshing. Always quick and consistently good. I love the red salsa that is spicier than the other red salsas. You know which one it is because it is a little lower than the other salsas because it’s so good. 1 burrito + 4 red salsas + cucumber + horchata = big yums.

As a regular customer at Mexico Viejo’s fairly new La Costa location, I’m happy to report excellent food, and nice guys who work there. If I were to rate this place on food & service, I’d give it 4 stars. HOWEVER…
My complaint and huge disappointment is that during my last vist, which will be my very last visit, I had observed two kitchen workers who used the coed/​unisex restroom separately just before I used it. As soon as I went into the restroom to brush my teeth, I immediately noticed that the sink was bone dry… a clear indication that these two workers did not wash their hands prior to returning to kitchen.
I was SO DISGUSTED by this, I cannot stomach the thought of eating there now. Such a disapointment since I’ve enjoyed eating at this place since they opened.
Incidentally, my son observed the same thing at El Callejon/​Encinitas. He observed a worker using the restroom while he was in there, then the worker left restroom without washing hands. When he saw the same guy approach our table with chips & salsa, and he told us what he had witnessed, we decided to leave.
I’m sure this disgusting habit occurs at many restaurants that we don’t even know about. I’ve never worked in the food/​beverage industry, but surely there’s got to be a monitoring system for these employees. How about a sink station which the employees must wash their hands, in order to get to their work station. Or a light that exposes the germs on their hands.
HELP STOP CONTAMINATION & FOOD POISONING by reporting these incidents!
