Cool place to come to, old time country store, great ambiance and decent food, worthwhile for a stop in on a summer or fall afternoon when you’re out in the woods or at a nearby farm or something and just want a quick bite to eat. I’ve also gotten catering from here on a number of occasions and it blows away the standard Panera stuff or other chain type places. Give it a try sometime, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

«Sandwiches from Fern’s» is always a treat at lunch. Panini and subs that border on the gourmet while still being an old time general store.

Ferns rules. Good meats and baked goods, nice folks and they sell alcohol. Cool spot to sit outside and have lunch. Herd they want to do live music and drinks at night which would be awesome. If we are being 100% honest with each other the pizza could use a little work… but all in all its a great place.

it’s the only food place in Carlisle, so it’s good that they have high quality Boar’s Head deli meats. They have tasty, decently priced sandwiches(try the bleu cheese roast beef). I also really like their brownies and baked goods. Also, you can get Backwood cigars here if you want to roll a blunt and you don’t have time to go to Bedford. They also have a little grocery section with hummus, pre-made salads, chips, snacks, wine, beer, milk, ice cream. The essentials. Very slow service sometimes, but that is expected when it is the only store in town. Another cool thing about this place is they have free WiFi and a bike tire pump if you need to put some air in the tires of your bicycle.

This place is great! The owners always remember you when you stop in, and those chocolate croissants are unbelievable. Seriously, wherever you are, drive there now and buy one. Worth it. I miss the cranberry scones though– they were my absolute favorite and Fern’s doesn’t carry them anymore. Everyone is friendly and they’ve got a great small-town ambiance thing going.

Massachusetts has 351 cities and towns. Our retirement Lunch Project is to have lunch in each one. Sometimes the pickings are few: only two in this small, wealthy, rural-ish suburb about 45 minutes NW of us. It’s a lovely town. However, the staff at Ferns were pretty grumpy and unwelcoming which was surprising given the old-fashioned country store vibe. We ordered our lunch from a glum deli worker and were told to pay after we’d eaten in the café area. When we arrived at the register, the owner snarled at me that he couldn’t remember the UPC for the chips I had eaten because they«carry over 30,000 items.» He stomped off to find it, scanned the item, threw it across the counter, took our money. No pleasantries exchanged. I never thought to bring my trash to the register?! Lots of cyclists stop here for lunch. Food was okay-ish, but next time we’ll try the atmosphere at the other food place: Kimball’s Ice Cream!

Took backroads to avoid highway traffic on our way home and came across Ferns. Since it was dinner time we ordered a few pizzas to take home. Turns out they were so good and our kids are picky! Kudos to the pizza guy. Loved the country feel to this place, felt like we were in Vermont. We will definitely go back!

My husband and I just moved to the area and stopped in here frequently while we were building our home in town. The staff at Ferns are so friendly! Im not understanding the negative reviews?! I appreciate the local feel of this town center gem and will continue to frequent them when i need to run out for some cream or Im craving a bikini panini or… their chili(which is great!).

I stop in often. Maybe their prices are a little bit high but not outrageous! I have always been treated well by the employees. The Chilli is very good as are most of the soups. Wish they did not run out so fast.

Not the friendliest bunch, but in Carlisle you don’t have many options… Food is sub Parr and a little on the pricey side. On long bike rides I would recommend packing a snack and eating at the town hall.

This place will be great for you if money is no object. Good selection, yuppie prices. After all, it is located in la de da land.

My family has tried Ferns pizza on several occasions and it is fantastic! We highly recommend it. On the weekends, we stop in frequently for sandwiches, soups and chili and they are always fresh and delicious. They also have the best brownies around! Ferns is a great local store.

Way overpriced. Rude staff. Poor selection. Small portions. Had a terrible experience. I will never go back and I’ve lived in Carlisle for 29 years. Buyer/Tourists beware. Oh, by the way — if you plan on having a late lunch or meeting someone at «Fern’s» and having a single adult beverage — it is REQUIRED that you purchase some of their over priced food; regardless of how much you’ve spent on beer/wine, groceries, cigarettes etc… even if the person you’re meeting has also purchased a meal and other overpriced items. I attempted to split a beer with another lifetime resident, and basically got hounded to buy food, after spending more than $ 50 combined on their wares… Real small town feeling out of this place? Absolutely not. And don’t let Fern’s owner intimidate you with his responses to your reviews. Demand a higher standard of business in a town with only one store. Zero stars is not an option… 1 star for simply being a store with a bathroom… that is a hole in the floor where your waste falls about 10 feet. Seriously.

Larry and Robin have done a great job bringing our local sundry shop(and this town!) into the 21st century. Good eats, wine & beer and everything you need for the home in a hurry– bread, butter, to, etc. it’s also the local hangout for the cyclists, kids, etc.

Ferns is a huge asset to Carlisle. They have great sandwiches, soups, chili. baked goods, cookies. We stop there for lunch frequently. I especially like the Golden Girl Honey Bunches which are delicious! Tonight I tried their PM Pizza for the first time and I loved it. Its a big, rectangular pizza that tastes homemade. The rest of my family agreed and also enjoyed it. The crust is very good. We had the chicken with roasted pepper pizza and look forward to trying other creations. Another fun thing that Ferns has is fun Carlisle«memorabilia» which is hard to find in Carlisle. I’ve bought several fun gifts like t-shirts and cards for friends who have moved away.

Ferns is just a few miles from my BF’s parents’ house, so we’ve gone there a few times to get sandwiches and baked goods. Everything has been quality: the sandwiches are made with Boar’s Head meats, and the bread used is so fresh and soft that it nearly upstages the sandwiches’ ingredients. Once I wanted to order a chicken caesar wrap for BF, and the sandwich maker told me that he wouldn’t have chicken for twenty minutes because it was in the oven. Now that’s a fresh ingredient! The cookies are really good too; I bought a chocolate chunk one for me and a gingerbread person for BF, and both were decadently delicious! Nothing is too expensive, with sandwiches from $ 5 – 8 and cookies at $ 1 each. The Ferns staff is really friendly to boot, especially the night manager(?) who has been the cashier a couple of times when we’ve been there. He always makes a bit of conversation with the customers.

Undoubtedly the best sandwich store west of Boston. If you want a delicious, small-town deli with the«everybody knows your name» feel, come to Fern’s. There aren’t that many things I miss about city life(though Carlisle can hardly be called the city), but this is one of them. Aside from the sandwiches, they’ve also got a coffee shop and baked goods that are as insanely addictive as the sandwiches are. The wine section that they recently added on has a decent selection, though personally I would like to see a little more rose wine. As locals are already aware, Fern’s is cyclist-friendly. Anyone who is planning a tour down route 225 without knowing the area well should find their way here to relax and rehydrate. And you should definitely make your way here in the fall — specifically October. the Halloween decorations are hilarious.
