good food, everything on the menu is good the only problems i have are, the small seating area and the time, it takes to long to get ur food, especially when it is busy, I’ve also seen them mess up pick up orders and I have waited over 30 minutes to receive food

Ordered to go, to split with a friend, a Jerk Chicken meal which came with a rice/vegetable mixture and paid the extra for a side of mac & cheese. Chicken was so thin that there was more of the taste of the coating than of the chicken. Chicken was overcooked, very salty, dry and the oil obviously had not been changed in awhile. The rice/vegetables mix was extremely salty with the vegetables having a rancid taste. I have no idea why they claim it to be Jerk Chicken… the ‘sauce’ on the chicken, rice/vegetables was a salty wet mixture and overly done with crushed red pepper. Mac & cheese was as basic as it could be. The ‘full of himself cook’ placed some precooked pasta(not macaroni) in a frying pan to heat for a bit, then tossed some grated cheddar on top of it until it melted… a ten year old child could make this! The bill was $ 18.00 and some change .and left the change from a twenty as a tip. The food went in the garbage. a total waste of $ 20.00! and we wound up going to Burger King drive-thru for lunch. I heard from friends who went there when it first opened that the food was good. well a couple of years later on our first visit it wasn’t. it was not edible!

What can I say about Freddy J’s… This is the BEST food you’ll taste in Buffalo! Fred puts his heart and soul into everything he cooks. On top of that, he’s just a great guy. Always laughing and talking with his customers. He really makes you feel welcome. I definitely recommend the chicken and red velvet waffles. It’s life changing! But to be honest you can’t go wrong with anything you choose. If I had to give a downside it would be the size of the place. It is tiny. Just enough room for counter service for maybe 8 people and the«kitchen» is right behind the counter. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, because it allows for a more personal experience. You watch the chef prepare your food and he gets to see you enjoy that ever important first bite!

Had the Fried Chicken once and the Fish another, and both were incredible! Freddy is a great guy and really nice and his cooking made you feel like he was just simply fixing something up in the kitchen

I really enjoyed my meal at Freddie J’s. I’ve had them bookmarked for a while, and just got around to trying them this past weekend. When we pulled up I initially thought that they were closed. I didn’t see an open sign and it looks like it could have been a seasonal business. Luckily, my wife said that the shutters were open and it looks like they were people inside. It didn’t look to me like it would be big enough to have people inside, but we investigated further. You enter through a door on the left hand side of the building and are immediately greeted with a countertop with 6 or so stools at it and a very friendly cook. I enjoyed the jerk wings which came on a bed rice with vegetables. The wings were delicious and not what I expected. They were coated in what I can only describe as a jerk gravy sauce, surprisingly delicious! My rice was cooked well and had a similar sauce to the wings which helps tie it together. I really enjoyed the fact that the vegetables in my rice were not overcooked, I find a lot of places make soggy vegetables, you will not find that here. I had a bite of my wife’s macaroni and cheese which was on point. They also had some of the best greens I’ve had in our area, for whatever reason the greens in our area tend to be bland. I am very excited about returning here at some point and hope to do so soon. Next time we will be trying the red velvet waffles with fried chicken. Despite there being a MasterCard symbol in the window, they could not accept credit the day we went, a minor inconvenience for such a delicious meal.

It’s tiny, counter seating for about 8−10ppl… But that’s part of its charm. The food is great(small menu though). Very reasonably priced. Definitely get in there, u won’t regret it. No alcohol or beer Still… Get in there for some great food.

Happened to be driving through the neighborhood today, and spotted this little place. After determining that we had done so during open hours, and that there is indeed indoor seating(a walk up window at the front of the restaurant is not in working order), we were immediately greeted by two of the most welcoming gentlemen we’ve met in some time. Not only was my order of ribs, Mac and greens incredibly delicious, but the vibe inside while watching fellow customers greeted and served truly gave me the sense that these guys take a lot of pride in what they are doing, although some of that may be inspired from Freddy J himself, as it appears that even if he is not in the restaurant physically, his presence is always with them and the delicious food. I have not previously found greens to be enjoyable, these greens were worth a second and third tasting even from this Irish girl. And the Mac n Cheese… you know even before sampling it is on point as you watch the strings of cheesy deliciousness pull away before entering your palate. Now the ribs… Oh for the love of ribs. I have enjoyed and not enjoyed plenty of ribs in my days… my favorites have always been juicy and fall off the bone… these particular ribs, might as well have been boneless! The meat was so tender and juicy that I was able to spare my hands the mess, and enjoyed small portions via fork, no knife necessary! We learned from the guys and each of the other customers that the Chicken and(red velvet) waffles are at the heart of the restaurant, so we will be back to give that dish a shot!

Seen this place on Unilocal.DON’T KNOW where customers have been eating, but I’ve tried the ribs, mac & cheese, greens and the ribs taste like they we’re bake in the oven and the mac & cheese as I seen the owner cook, noodles was put in a pot and he added cheese in to melt it. That is not the way real down home mac & cheese is done. I’m not trying to put a damper on the owner but the food is not that good at all. Good service though.

Stumbled in this tiny place during the Diversity Fest and was so happy I did. For five dollars(tickets really) I got to try the ribs, mac n cheese, and greens. Let me tell you– being from the south I’m pretty picky about my ‘Q. The plate did not dissapoint. Ribs were fall off the bone, sticky, saucy amazing. The mac was cheesy and the noodles were big and allowed for the cheese ro stick to them, and the greens(this is where most fall short– greens can go wrong so fast) were A+. Not too peppery, sweetened with a bit of sugar, perfect. No swamp around. The cook was mannin’ the cook spot like a boss(lots of to-go orders by phone) and the owner wasn’t too busy to thank us for stopping in. Clean and comfortable, with stools to eat inside if ya can’t wait to get home. Good BBQ in Buffalo– who’d da thought?

There are just not enough good things I can say about Freddy’s. Everyone should have the red velvet waffles and fried chicken at least once in your life. Freddy himself is an awesome chef, great recipes, great presentation, great food, great guy. Two things; cash only and hours are 11 – 5 Monday through Sunday.

This restaurant should be called Freddy J’s Kitchen. The Chef is personable and his close proximity allows patrons to feel as of they are part of the creation process ! I’ve stopped by several times this year and will continue to do so. The food is beautiful and delicious. Chef really puts his own spin on each dish! Do yourself the favor and stop by for a meal!

This place is so cool! It’s small, authentic, and the hospitality was fabulous! Freddy is a amazing chef. Everything was cooked right in front of us. There is outdoor seating when weather is nice. I will definitely be going back.

Excellent food, chef has great personality and chatted while making our food. Very small quaint place with only 8 seats… parking behind. Highly recommend! Southern fried chicken with red velvet waffles and great southern comfort food!

At leats it’s Freddy J’s and not Freddy K’s, otherwise it would be a very scary place indeed. Nightmarish, you might say. If it was Freddy A’s, it would belong to Fred Astaire of course. If it was Freddy M’s, it would be Freddie Mercury’s place, in Frederick, Maryland. If it was Freddy O’s then it would be in Fredonia. If it was Freddy W’s, it would be an infamous and disgusting British serial killer. Yes, we have those too. Not as many as you do, but still. If it was Freddy Eh?‘s, then it would be in Fredericton, Canada. I wanted to love this place, and I kind of expected to be blown away. In all honesty, I probably wouldn’t go back unless someone else insisted I did. Let me explain. I ordered the Jerk Chicken Sandwich. People had raved about how amazing it was. When I went in to order, there were 2 ladies sitting eating Chicken and Red Velvet Waffles at the counter. I thought, ooh, that’s fancy. Very delicious looking. The sandwich was a little pricey($ 10) and a bit of a wait, which is fine. When it was ready, I opened it to dig in, and honestly, all I could think was… where’s my Jerk Chicken sandwich, and who put this hipster imposter sandwich in the box in its place? It didn’t taste of Jerk whatsoever, it tasted more like fried chicken breast with a lot of crispy breading on it, slathered in an elaborate thousand island dressing, on an overly toasted greek gyro pita(!) which are not my faves, are pretty generic, and are not great for holding a sandwich… and in the box is a caesar-style salad as well, which I thought was not particularly great. And as for those saying it’s a little spicy… it’s by far the least spicy and un-jerk-y Jerk Chicken I’ve ever had. It did taste good, yes, but it wasn’t amazing by any stretch of the imagination, and for that price and with the hype I just expected more. Having said that I think a lot of people would really like it. I especially think this place would be good for hipsters and college kids, because the sandwich reminds me of the kind of sandwich that you get in very pretentious places(sorry!). Yes, more than anything else, that’s what this sandwich said to me. Fancy & pretentious. Gourmet, but not in the hearty way, more in the fusion, show-offy, nouveau way. Which is totally not my thing. Note: I am talking about the food only. There is nothing whatsoever pretentious about the location! It’s totally cool!

I don’t usually review a restaurant after my first visit but after about two bites, I knew I was eating a meal that I’d enjoy. I grabbed takeout from Freddy J’s for lunch on Friday. I had a fish fry, which came with macaroni and cheese and green beans for somewhere around $ 10. Fred answered the phone when I called and he was just finishing to cook my mac and cheese when I walked in, and then scooped the fish from frying and right to my takeout container. The feel of the tiny interior is like sitting in a friend’s kitchen and chatting with him while he cooks. It’s very cozy. The fish fry is NOT beer battered. It’s a proper, well-seasoned corn meal batter. It was delicious. I also enjoyed the freshly made macaroni and cheese. I devoured my meal even though I had planned to save some for later. I will update my review after I try the barbecue, but based on this meal I can say that I’ll definitely return to Freddy J’s.

I love the West Side and this spot has always caught my eye every single time I’ve walked or drove past. On an absolute spontaneous whim yesterday, I decided to finally stop in here while being out-of-my-mind«hangry»(a mix of hungry and angry from being so hungry, I know… total first world problems.) First thing I noticed was their beautiful and unique building. Designed and shaped to make use of a very small area, the space inside is small(yet feels pretty open) and there’s only bar seating for around seven people. I sat down and was immediately given attention, a glass of water(in a wine glass, nice!) and placed my order for two BBQ ribs that came with a side of mac and cheese, cornbread and greens. The food was pretty good, which you see being cooked right in front of you. The mac and cheese and greens were superb, but the ribs were just OK. Only half of the meat on the ribs was fall of the bone tender, while the other was a bit chewy and even tasted a little dry, despite all the tasty BBQ sauce that was on it. I was debating giving this place 3 or 4 stars and settled on 3.5, which I rounded up to 4. I feel like it’s pretty hit or miss at times. I hear the jerk chicken sandwich is incredible, although very spicy from people that came to eat while I was there. I also had BBQ chicken from them at a catered event, which was amazing and delicious. A great place to go if you’re seeking comfort food /BBQ on the West Side.
