Are you tired of the usual food haunts in BCS? Are you looking for something different? First, get on Unilocal and search for«restaurants» in your area. You will find some hole-in-the-wall you never heard of just waiting to cram good food down your gullet. For instance, take Sugba. This is a Filipino food truck parked in front of the Filipiniana Asian Emporium on 29th St. at the strip center at 29th and Briar Oaks. The owner is Rey, and he is one of the friendlier guys in the food business in town. He and his family also run the emporium. We only heard about this place because of Unilocal. And we’re glad we tried it. Rey didn’t recognize our faces, so he already has a built-in customer base that he is familiar with. He suggested the best-seller, «the #1». What it is, is BBQ pork on skewers, served with steamed rice and a Filipino slaw. We ordered our food, and he told us to pay inside the store. So we did. His son was behind the counter, couldn’t have been older than 15. Nice kid. We looked around the store, and the Mrs. found a few items to take home. The store is quite small, but packed with cool stuff. It was also busy. Somebody in front of us bought some Filipino soda that looked like it might be good to have with the food from the truck. Two«#1’s» cost about $ 17, so that was not too bad at all. We went outside to wait, where there was a table or two set up for eating. After about a 20 minute wait, we finally got our food, and we took it back to our car, where it was much cooler. No utensils or napkins provided. I may have missed them at the truck window, I’m not sure. So take a look around for some, or ask Rey if he has any. The food: awesome. The sweet, tangy BBQ flavor of the pork coupled with the grilled flavor created a delicious experience. The slaw was vinegary, and contained peppercorns and raisins. I mixed mine with the rice, which was just plain steamed rice. This was some pretty dang good stuff, and we will definitely be trying this again. There were other options to choose from, and there are pictures of some of the items on the outside of the truck. But go with the #1 as an introduction, because it will definitely bring you back. This place deserves good word-of-mouth, so when you try it, spread the word.

I’ve been leaving this review unfinished for… like 3 weeks now, because I can’t think of an interesting way to review it. I hate reviewing things in an uninteresting way. That’s what everyone else is here for! But… looks like my writer’s block has gotten the best of me, so I’ll just write this review like a normal person would. This truck makes appearances on First Fridays in Bryan(first Friday of each month, there’s activities and stuff in downtown Bryan) and every Saturday at Filipiniana Asian Emporium( ). I caught it at the Emporium and tried #1, BBQ pork. It’s 3 skewers of pork, a vinegary slaw, and rice. The price on their paper said $ 6.50, but when I paid at the store(they run both the Emporium and Sugba), it was like… $ 8.50. Apparently the cheaper price is only when the food truck is traveling. Bummer. Anyways, the food was decent. The BBQ is done in a unique way, flavored in a red sauce reminiscent of that red Chinese BBQ( ) except not as sweet. I definitely recommend trying it. The slaw was a nice acidic contrast to the savoriness of the BBQ. And the rice was… rice. What REALLY made this truck is the owner, Ray. He owns the truck and the food store, and runs it along with his wife and son. All of them are really dedicated and enthusiastic to serving their food and educating their customer. His energy is almost infectious and it’s a real pleasure talking to him in between prepping the food and eating. All of his menu pages have, literally, paragraphs of information about the food, what it is, how it’s prepared, and some cultural context behind it. If this was at a drive thru, I’d be really pissed because I wouldn’t be able to read all of it clearly to make my order. But it’s not, you get to flip through the menu yourself and it’s really quite interesting. So, stop going to Panda Express. Immerse yourself in something new. Broaden your horizons. Give Sugba a visit.

This place is heaven. I wish I had known it was just a block away from me for the past few months. I discovered it yesterday and went again today. Well, actually I brought a couple friends to their usual location in front of their small Filipino grocery store and they weren’t there. I talked to his wife(nicest person ever) and she CALLED her husband and asked him to bring the truck to the store. For 4 people. I said we can go where he is if that’s easier and if he is actually down to cook for 4 people. She said of course and we drove over TOTHEIRHOME and he cooked for us personally. I should mention that the owner Rey is also the nicest person in existence. He was laughing and super positive, happy to make food for us, even giving us some freebies.(also we went back to grocery store and bought a bunch of random chips and drinks [dat mango nectar]) The food. THEFOODSON. Of course the barbecue is crazy good, but the lumpia. That friggin lumpia. Get it. And yeah the chicken and pork are dang fantastic, flawlessly flavored and cooked. Also I got the crispy pata(like a chunk of pork fried on the bone) and good god it was amazing. It’s been confirmed that the food is great but I haven’t seen a review mentioning how good of people the owners are. Their son sometimes runs the register and he is incredibly polite. They set a great example representing the kindness of Filipino people. We were actually giddy when we left his house because it had been such a happy experience. Go get Sugba.

Having lived on Guam for ten years with its multicultural culinary options, Filipino cuisine was everywhere. It is also the basis for a lot of Chamorro(Guamanian) foods. The food truck is a relatively new edition to the Filipiniana Asian Emporium grocery store. The Sugba food truck is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Saturdays has a revolving menu and based on the availability of local fresh produce. Today Kare-Kare and Pinakabet was on the menu. All great. The revolving Saturday menu includes lechon(rotisserie pig), pancit, adobo and others. This food truck has the only rotisserie on wheels that I know of. Fridays and Sundays only the pork, beef and chicken Filipino style barbecue is available. The food was outstanding and the only thing missing was coconut trees, the white beach and the blue Pacific Ocean.

Sugba is an interesting new food truck which joins the legions(well just under 30) of food trucks in Bryan and College Station and it hails as the 1st only Filipino cuisine. When eating at it just days after it opened the original plan according to the owner was to have it outside the Filipiniana Asian Emporium every day. However I have only found it there on Saturdays since. The only thing I have tried are the pork and chicken BBQ skewers, lovely every time. A true culinary masterpiece of succulence. Yet what is interesting is that the daily plates come with a full 8.5×11 story of the history of the foods. Very extremely detailed documentation on paper, of what is being offered. A very unique eating experience.
