I happened to find myself in Sheepshead Bay on Saturday evening, and came across this German Beer Garden right on Emmons Ave called U Sweika. The menu looked pretty interesting, so I figured I’d give it a go. First off, the place has a real nice vibe to it — similar to what you’d actually find in a small bar/restaurant in German. The place was very well decorated, complete with cuckoo clocks and the like. Nice job. The menu and beer choices were right on, too. The menu is a large wooden book — really clever. As for the beer, I opted for a pale ale from tap and it was quite good. For apps, I ordered the soft pretzels and potato pancakes. Hit and miss. The pretzels were very very hard — not what was to be expected. This was not intentional though — the pretzels were, simply, overdone. The potato pancakes were very tasty though. For my main course, I ordered Hungarian goulash. Now, I’m part Hungarian, so I know how goulash should be made. U Sweika made a good attempt at replicating it, but it was not perfect. The real tragic part, however, is that part of the beef was steaming hot, and part was literally cold to the touch. Not a plus in my book! I’m trying to give U Sweika the benefit of the doubt here. Honestly, I would have given this place a 2.5 star if I could, but figured I’d round up. The food, itself, could be quite tasty if just prepared with a little more care(take the pretzels out 5 minutes earlier and but my goulash back in for 5 more).
