This place is cool. It’s also where I heard the worst DJ of all time. I think at one point he played cherry poppin daddy’s/ linkin park mashup… Haha but this place is great.

Was in Bk for the weekend for the first time. Having no experience with bars in the area, I randomly chose to go to this bar to meet up with an old friend. I was very impressed with the diverse atmosphere, spirited and super friendly bartenders, awesome dj, and of course, a solid selection of beer on tap. I would definitely come back here again.

Still coming here after 13 years. Strolled in on a Tuesday for happy hour — 2 for 1 beer till 9 and ta-da it’s Free Pool on Tuesdays. SCORE! Put my name on the board and played the nite away. Folks I played with were friendly and helpful with the shots. After winning a few times one player even bought me a drink — that’s cool and old school. Liking it. Bartenders were nice and sweet. They told me that on the weekends they have DJs. Will have to stop by and check it out. Only one thing I can say was needed — more booze choices. What they have is good but could have a bit more. Still 2 for 1 Beer you cannot go wrong with. See you soon.

Love this place. Nice to have a place where I can find a relaxed atmosphere, an awesome bartender and cheap beer. Fantastic break from all the hipster fancy brew spots.

If your idea of a fun night involves getting sprayed with beer in the midst of conversation at a bar, then by all means, come here. This is what happened on a recent Friday night when I came to Rbar with my boyfriend and a friend of ours. A group of guys near us apparently thought it would be hilarious if one of them tapped the beer of another one, thereby causing it to spray out of the bottle like a fire extinguisher. It flew all over my hair, my boyfriend’s shirt, and our friend’s face. When our friend said something to the guy, he got in our faces about it as if it was somehow surprising that someone would be upset after having beer sprayed all over them. Granted, the bar can’t control all the actions of its patrons, but this gives you an idea of the clientele here, i.e., douchebags. Yes, the drinks are cheap, so I guess that’s a plus. Their selection isn’t exactly mind blowing, however. For example, the only gin they have is Beefeater. And while it’s true there are no hipsters here(which many other reviewers noted as a plus), what difference does it make if the people who ARE here are assholes? No thanks.

This place would have gotten 5 stars if it wasn’t cash only. The bartender was nice, made my drinks very strong. $ 7 for a mixed drink is a good price in my book. On Wednesdays from 9PM to 2AM you can play music for free on their jukebox. They also have a happy hour deal until 9, 2 for 1 beers. Cheap prices $ 5 — $ 7. Ladies bathroom is really nice and clean which is a plus given it’s a dive bar. The vibe is cool. I will definitely come back. Pool table in the back!

This place is cash only and looks to be a dive bar for the locals. Big Plus, there are no hipsters in this joint.

This little bar has lots of character! Nice cold beers, a pool table, and fun crowd. Thanks for allowing me to perform burlesque here. Sorry for all the glitter.

The man in black, Johnny Cash, was born J.R. Cash. The J stood for nothing. And so did the R. They were initials without a root. The moral cowardice it must take to deny a child their God-given right to a name is incomprehensible to most. Cash made it. He succeeded despite having circumspect parents. The absence of a name came to define him. It came to represent his style and yes, hombres, his substance. So what’s it gonna be, R Bar? What lurks beneath the R? What hides behind the eighteenth letter of our glorious alphabet? Could be anything. What R word? Maybe it’s an R person. We may never know. And, maybe, just maybe, that’s a good thing. Then, the R means whatever you want it to me. It adapts to one’s own fears and whims. Revelry. Requisite. Recompense. Recapitulation. Ribald. Ruin. Rot. R bar. Indeed it is our bar.

What I love about R Bar is that it is devoid of that pretentious air that stifles many of the bar experiences in Williamsburg. The owner, Greg, and his staff do an amazing job as hosts. They’re friendly without being facetious and very helpful to a novice drinker like myself. The last time I was there, Greg offered me some sage advice on a few new beer offerings. I don’t recall what he said, but it made me wanna drink some more beer :) Man, he’s good! What’s that you say? A novice drinker giving a review of a bar? Yes, that’s right, I’m telling you and you better listen up. I know a good time when I see one. That good time is partly in fact that there’s so much to do. They have a pool table, board games, great jukebox, televisions, cozy lounge tables, one of those video game touch screen thingies, and a dart board. Games a plenty! Throw in the friendly local fanfare, and I’m never bored. When you have the alcohol tolerance of a 15 year old girl, you need to be constantly entertained to avoid drinking another one. Umm, and no, I’m not a 15 year old girl(Oh, to be free!). So when you feel like making a character move, and in the mood for something more low key, R Bar is where it’s at. Word to your mother. She might ACTUALLY be there… Hanging out. Because she knows all the cool spots.

I’m upgrading R Bar. Honestly, while there’s nothing to love about the place, the bartenders are really friendly and generous and the atmosphere is casual and laid back in a way that is in no way self-conscious – it’s like a slice of normalcy in Williamsburg/Greenpoint, which is sometimes a very good thing. And also, there’s nothing to dislike about R Bar either, so four stars it is, especially for being a solid stop-off for when you’re not quite ready to go home.

I’m into it. I just got home from this place, and I have to say it seems pretty cool for one reason and one reason only: NOONEWASTHERE. It’s rare to go to a totally empty bar on a Saturday night in NYC. But alas! Here it is. I am a big big fan of old man bars, and this was it. We walked in and it was absolutely quiet. Maybe 5 people at the bar, just drinking. EMPTYPOOLTABLE. Friendly bartenderess and relatively cheap drinks(Jameson neat + Jack and coke = $ 12). I would go back, just because I’m antisocial and hate loud, obnoxious bars.

To preface: I goddamn love dive bars. Like, for a point of reference, figure that my own personal hell is anyplace you could even loosely describe as a «club.» Got that? Good. This place has a few things working against it, to be sure. An electronic dart board? Questionable clientele at the jukebox playing equally questionable German hardcore(and not just Rammstein, okay? We can all handle Rammstein just fine. This shit was serious)? But they’ve also got the one thing that matters the most; the thing that earns R Bar 2 more stars than it probably deserves: $ 1 pints of the Banquet Beer during happy hour. You can’t beat that – you can’t. I defy you.

This is no longer a dive bar. Perhaps the ownership changed. It’s now a pretentious bar in the heart of nowhere. $ 6 draft beers? Forget it. The only thing I liked was the music. They had a good mix of jazz and blues.

I will have to come back for the recommended happy hour. A little too dead for me on a Saturday night. Seems like it has potential. This should be a survey question: Hot women [x] YES. DJ was not great and we tried really hard to dance. Failed. Stay tuned for a redux.

R Bar has been my favorite dive in the neighborhood for almost five years now. Beer drinkers looking for a cheap buzz will love the $ 2 pints of Coors Heavy. Go before 9pm for happy hour, and the 2-for-1 turns that into a $ 1 pint. Try finding a better deal than that. The owners hang out in the bar almost every day and keep the place clean and running smoothly. On a final note, don’t go to R Bar, I don’t want you all messing up the vibe.

My favorite dive bar in the hood. The bartenders are always so nice and stop and have a nice little conversation. The juke box has all the tunes. and never to crowded on a Saturday night, which is always a selling point for me. Plus booths! I love a good booth.

After eating mounds of Frito pie and strawberry confetti cake, drinking all the«punch,» and putting the sangria into the home carbonator we were out if all consumables. So like thirsty children we followed the Pied Piper birthday girl down the street and into the R Bar. As one of my friends stumbled in she paused, smiled, frowned, laughed hectically, and then sat at the table pointing violently at the naked mannequin saying«I thought that was the DJ»… which pretty much sums up this bar. This place smells like a leaky toilet and damp wood, is filled with a hodgepodge of dirty«decorations,» has a giant bowl of NYC condoms at the door(for the way out, please), has a surprisingly nice-ish bathroom(complete with common use lotions and perfumes), and is always a good(but not great) time.
