As a proud member of the Polish nation, I can attest to the awesomeness of this place. The food is very typical to what your Mama or Babcia would have been making before all those vegan and gluten-free cretins came into existence. Anyway, these types of cafeteria-style feeding holes sprouted out in Greenpoint in the 80s and 90s to feed all those hungry and hardy Polish men who came to work in the US. They needed something quick, cheap, filling, and a reminder of home. Quality varied by location, but Pyza is as good as it gets. While many closed in the new Greenpoint, Pyza is still chugging along. Heck this place seems to be frozen in time, same ol’ bad(but efficient) customer service, outdated décor(if any), and kitchen ladies behind a tiny window. Come in with an open mind, and don’t expect the latest food craze or fancy dining. I mean you have to grab your own utensils, get to work! Grab a big piece of meat, a soup(zurek, borscht, etc), potatoes, side of shredded cabbage/beets/carrots, and a glass of kompot. You’ll never go hungry again, all for less than $ 10!

At first, I thought this was some hipster’s alternative spelling of pizza. You can’t blame me, given the proximity to Williamsburg. Unilocal informed me that it was in fact a Polish restaurant. I’d never had Polish food, but judging from the signs in the neighborhood, Greenpoint seemed like the perfect place to dive in. Though I have nothing to compare it to, it sees legit. This is a no-frills restaurant. It’s like a cross between a cafeteria and a small-town diner. They focus on food as opposed to presentation. I ordered the potato dumpling with meet. Whatever I expected was quite different from what I got. The dumpling sort of looked like a dinosaur egg in shape, texture, and a shiny/slimy coating. I initially regretted my choice, but that regret dissipated once I started eating. The meat filling was really good, particularly with the chopped onions on top. The dumpling was served with a choice of salad. I chose the cucumber salad. I didn’t like it very much. The dressing was like watered down milk, and didn’t have any discernible flavor. I added salt and pepper, which made it a little better, but I felt no need to finish. The prices are great, and it’s a good place to have authentic(I assume, but what do I know?) Polish food.

Pyza ain’t nothing to fuck with. Amazing polish food, no frills, no niceties. Order at the counter, you idiot. This is basically what they say to you, and I don’t even care because the food was so cheap and so good. They have most polish dishes you could think of. The kielbasa is incredible and the potatoes are home-cooking polish style, not too much butter and kind of lumpy(the BEST). Their salatki are perfect in every way, fresh and not overdressed. My boss had the polish plate which comprised at least three decent-sized meals. He liked it. Go here.

This place is very homely. The décor of this place is very plain and there are a bunch of old ladies taking your orders and cleaning the tables. The unremarkable-ness of this restaurant and the self-serve pick-up your own spoons/forks/food-tray makes this place seem quaint. I can imagine my polish mom making this food if my mom was polish. Food was good albeit boring. I got the meat perogies and tried some of my friend’s cheese perogies. I also had coleslaw and red cabbage on the side. I only wish the food had more spice and flavor.

Great polish food, cheap and good atmosphere. Chicken cutlets, cabbage and beet salad is delightful.

Mashed(not whipped, you philistines) made from actual fresh potatoes! Awesome potato pancakes! Golabki! Amazing half-dill pickles! This place remains authentically Polish in a quickly gentrifying neighborhood getting overrun with typical generic hipster fare. Hopefully the excessively authentic(ie dingy) lunch counter«ambience» will remain and it won’t get an expensive makeover at the expense of the food like happened at S&B.

Soooo good. I was unsure about Polish food before I came here, but now I’m in love! Everything from the potato pancakes with sour cream, to the kielbasa and kraut, the various pirogies, cabbage wrap, was all soo delicious! Definitely would come back when I’m in the mood for Polish food.

i relly need to post this review since i had such a horriible experience in this restaurant. i went there to eat yesterday with my husband, as first timers trying polish food we start asking the girl in the front about the tradional food and what we could order, we wanted to try a little of everything, she told as about the pieroguis and recomended us to get the polish specialties plate. my husband said ok thats the one we want and then we sat to wait for our food, 25min passed and i aske the girl if our food was almos ready and she was surprised and said omg i didnt know you really wanted, you were asking me questions about the food and i didnt realized you wanted. after 25 minutes that she saw us seating there, how in the worl she never came to us and ask at least, are you guys ready to order??? of course she wasnt paying attetion to us because she was on the phone the whole time. i really had a bad time in this restauran and not because of the food but because of the service!!!

This building is very unstable. That’s why the call it the Leaning Tower of Pyza. Also, Alex K has been here. I’d just like to state that, for the record. So that’s a plus. What to get: White Borscht, or anything. I came here as part of a food tour on which I passed up Jadlo and the other famous Polish restaurant in the area, because this seemed the cheapest and the best for a to-go order. I was way too full to be eating Polish food anyway. Yet I stopped in. It was a long walk from the door to the buffet-style food. They recommended an order of Borscht so I snapped it up and I absolutely loved it. It was filling and warm and delicious and very competitively priced, especially for this part of «Brokelyn» which is named as such for a very good reason. With all of these awesome Polish places in one part of town, you’d think you were in Warsaw. But if you never«saw a war» then you’re not, because the Poles have seen plenty of conflict over the years. And my Pole, actually, has seen plenty of conflict too. If by conflict you mean deep, dark, sinister and dangerous places. There’s a reason they call it «the Pole in the Hole.» But back to this restaurant. It’s buffet style, but the service is nice and the food is excellent. The White Borscht is top notch. They served me right before closing. I’m looking forward to going back one day for a sit-down, and also at the 2 other big name Polish places in the same little neighborhood, Krol… thingy(sp) and Lomzynianka. Lol. Now I have to go, because I’m late for a Unilocal event which I’m not actually invited to, so if you don’t see me again alive, you know why. And yes I’m taking my Pole with me.

GOTPOLISH !! YOUGOTTHEREALDEALHERE!!! AUTHENTICHOMEMADEPOLISHFOOD… made fresh in their kitchen & served up «working-class» like all the Polish workers who either come for lunch or are finishing the days labor. Even though it a obviously local place that has constant Polish Cable TV on & some give you a second look since you may not look like a regular local denizen… WHOGIVES A DAMN when every dish is less than $ 10 !!! ITDAMNCHEAP… not just reasonable… it is a STEAL!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HOLYHAMHOCKBATTYMAN: EVEN the huge jelly like, fall off the bone amazing HAMHOCKS with yummy Cabbage, Kraut, & fresh Mashed Potatoes(really a meal for two). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TRIPPINGONTHETRIPE, LSDNOTINCLUDED: The TRIPESOUP is another winner. Its slow cooked rich goodness is tender soft succulent & not gamey like some Hispanic versions. It is seasoned just right & has tons of TRIPE. From the amazing Pierogis to the Tripe, you really cannot go wrong with anything here. It is a great PITSTOP on the way back from a trip to Manhattan to Brooklyn(but not during rush hour). You also MUST stop by STEVE’s Meats down the street to grab the best homemade Kielbasa in the US to either take home, via car, plane, or train… or pack it in ice packs and Fed-Ex it to yourself in other parts of the US… like in California. ANYWAY, IFYOUWANTTHEREALPOLISHDEAL &CANPRETENDTHATYOURMOMCOOKEDTHIS GOHERE!!! Yes, it is a lovely hole in the wall. Yes, the parking & commute stinks. Yes, it is NOT for the PRETENTIOUSYUPPYTYPE! But…you would be hard pressed to find better, unless you go to Poland, or have a Polish Mom/Grandmom for your very own… or have a close friend who will invite you over for dinner. THISISETHNICFOODATIT’S BEST!!!

Didn’t eat all day. Glad I stopped by here. It’s been a while. 8.50 $ for the chicken cutlet entrée. Massive cutlet(refer to picture) that comes with a nice portion of smashed potatoes and your choice of side and a small glass of kompot. I pick ‘mix’ which isn’t on the menu I believe, but it’s a mix of three sides, beet, cucumber, and lettuce salad. Delicious and homey. Just likes moms.

I wish I’d known about Pyza before last night. Very good food for not a lot of money. It’s as easy as that. My plate of bigos was really big. Lots of sauerkraut, well seasoned, potatoes that weren’t clumpy. Delicious. And I knew that I liked the pierogies, but after reading that they are hand made, to order, made me pat myself on the back a little bit picking out how delicious they were. The skin isn’t too thick, they are flavorful and served very warm, but not«scald your mouth» hot. And while the pickle soup could be a little bit pickle-ier, it was very good. Some people might scoff at a restaurant where you have to get your own silverware, but I had no qualms. I just wish that I could have gotten my own water too. I’ll be back in the future.

They make the best pierogi in Greenpoint, absolutely. They’re clearly handmade(to order, by the way!), and come covered in butter and caramelized onions. I love the carrot and beet salads as well, and the atmosphere is unique. Don’t come if you want fancy, or even cozy. I thought the restaurant was perpetually closed, or a front for the first six months I lived in the neighborhood. But even though it looks unlit and is apparently a portal to 1980’s Poland, it’s a damn fine meal.

I love this place! I’ve trekked through the snow to come here, and it’s worth it. I usually get the pierogi ruskie and they are delicious and filling. Portions are large and inexpensive. The atmosphere is relaxed and the Polish TV is a nice touch.

I dream of their stuffed cabbage. It’s exactly how I would season and cook… but fail to do so every time I try. My boyfriend who is a chef said their veal was so so. Looking forward to trying out more of their dishes!

This is another great Greenpoint Polish eatery, although I prefer the cooking at Relax. This place, however, is very popular with Polish folks. I enjoyed the cutlet here as well as the pierogies. The stuffed cabbage is good, too. I thought the portions were a little smaller than at Relax, and the flavors a little different. Maybe it’s a matter of a different version of the foods — like the chefs may be from different parts of the country. Reasonable prices.
