Came here when my favorite place(Chuko, ramen) had a 1.5 hour wait on a Saturday night and I was too hungry to wait. Solid food but not outstanding. I really love fish tacos, so I ordered two(one sautéed, one fried) and the person I was with ordered the chicken plate; we shared the chips and guac(more than enough food for two people). Also ordered a margarita(on the rocks with salt). The chips are seasoned and I know people have very strong opinions about that — I usually don’t like it, but in this case I did. All food and drinks were solid, but not wow-worthy. But, I will say that the waiter was super nice, the place was nice & warm, and the décor is nice and bright and fun(great for cold dreary winter days). Overall, the place is fine but ultimately I think I’d choose Citrico(nearby on Washington with amazing fish tacos) or Chavela’s(on Franklin, also great fish tacos) over Pequena.

Pequana is awesome. For a casual Mexican place in the neighborhood, it can’t be topped. It says cash only on the door and there are ATMS everywhere so I don’t know why people are so bent out of shape about it. I really enjoy both the spicy and regular margarita here and every food item I’ve ordered has been a surprising and pleasing rendition of what I was expecting. The quesadillas look like flying saucers and come out fried. Amazing!

Repeat excellence in service and BESTSHRIMPQUESADILLA you can order! Enchiladas, black bean dip, plantain quesadillas, and steak tacos are amazing. Brunch is awesome. Margaritas perfectly natural tasting, not too sweet. Please visit and enjoy the staff are the nicest!

Woah. Underrated. Almost everything is made in house and absolutely world class nachos. Not typical bar pub nachos, but hey we’re doing our own thing nachos. Excellent pico de gallo. Great guac. To be honest I was too drunk to give an honest evaluation of the sauteed fish tacos by the time they arrived. Both bartenders were so cool with us. Cash only and gave us directions to the nearest ATM(apparently not a given). I’m a happy customer

Skip it 2 waiters chilling and disinterested ans for some reason lots of flies! I’ve been to the other in Fort Greene a few times, but these guys are very different and didn’t like the reception and the fact that you need cash„ have no atm and had tons of flies flying around.

Good spot for shrimp tacos. I thought the skeleton were cool. Just sayin. I also like that it is the busiest restaurant in the area.

Cash only? Seems weird to see a restaurant as cash only nowadays. Sangria was just ok. Enchiladas were great! Loved the colorful and fun atmosphere of the restaurant!

There’s a lot to like about Pequena. Friendly and attentive staff, which is always welcoming. The place itself is charming… Well at least I think so. Others might feel differently after viewing the creepy skeletal dolls on the walls. The salsa music playing not too loud and not too low was enjoyable. My phone also died 5 minutes after I entered this place and the waitress was happy to charge it for me(this goes back to the friendly staff part). What I did not like about this place was the food. I think I made some very poor choices but I was presented with a brunch menu that listed eggs, eggs and more eggs. So I ordered the Cast Iron pans. Surprisingly, our food was served on regular plates. My «pan» consisted of re-fried beans, platano maduro, chorizo and 2 fried eggs. I enjoyed the platano. I ordered a pan for my daughter that came with scrambled eggs, and potatoes. She enjoyed the eggs and offed my platano and chorizo. While I think this place is not great for brunch, I still plan on heading back to try some of the more traditional Mexican fares, like a taco.

Solid Mexican food. This isn’t the BEST Mexican, but it is better than many other nearby places. The food is above average(in my opinion) and the service was also above average. The atmosphere is eclectic and fun. We came with a group of 4 and had a round of margaritas to start. Margaritas are strong and not too sour/sweet. I think this is a good date spot, and also a nice place for a few friends to have a nice meal.

Black bean and sweet plantain cheese — my favorite bite of the night was the quesadilla. It hit the salty-sweet, melty-crispy notes in all the right ways. Mushroom tacos — tasty and filling as a two-taco app, double tortillas, nice seasoning on mushrooms, definitely more American than Mexican with shredded lettuce, and def recommend adding lime Chips and guacamole — Kind of weird, they sprinkled a lot of red seasoning on the chips and the guac was obviously not made fresh, it was kind of brown and very cold which means it was prob pre-portioned and mixed up a bit before it was brought to the table, I would pass on these Stewed pork tostada — pretty much all you can ask for, crispy tostada, savory pork, sharp crumbled white cheese, delicious Overall, not life changing Mexican food and definitely not destination worthy, but if you’re in Prospect Heights and in the mood for Mexican, your stomach and wallet will be satisfied. Cash only.

Sooo much potential. The décor reminds me of a Liz Lessner restaurant. The food was hit or miss, though. I really enjoyed their take on a quesadilla. It’s smaller and not cut into little pizza slices like most tex-mex places like to serve up, and they put the guac on the inside… which speaking of guac, they do a nice job here… really good. I started with a frozen margarita and it was really good, but I got a second one on the rocks(by accident) and it tasted like straight sour mix. It was disgusting. I also ordered a cup of soup, was given a bowl and it was about as basic as tortilla soup can possibly get. Like I’m pretty sure they just microwaved some cilantro and shredded chicken in a bowl of water, dropped some bagged tortillas in there, and served it to me. Overall, I would have given this place a 3, but the service drops it to a two. 1.) I ordered a frozen margarita. After trying to flag down the waitress for about 10 minutes to order a second, she brought me one on the rocks. Not a huge deal, but she wasn’t paying attention to us so I just drank it… which again, I wouldn’t have cared, but it tasted like ass. 2.) I ordered a cup of soup and was given a bowl. 3.) I asked if I could have the sour cream on the side for my quesadilla. She said no problem… left the sour cream off the dish and charged me for a side of sour cream. I really wanted to like this place and every restaurant has a few items on the menu that aren’t as good as the others but the service was just bad. I will probably come back and give it a second chance just because of the convenience of it, but I’m a huge tex-mex fan and this place bombed a big opportunity to have a regular.

Mexicawful!!! This place clearly doesnt value their customers and is trying to make money by being misleading to customers on the menu. 1) $ 8 margarita, $ 21 carafe How many glasses are in a carafe? Server says 3 ½, really there are 2 so a carafe equals two glasses and should be no more than $ 16 net rip off of the customer = $ 5 Maybe I’m cheap but I dont know anybody that wants to get ripped off five bucks. DON’T BUY A CARAFE! 2)Ordered the fajitas on the special menu, most expensive dish What do you get when you order fajitas? Meat, Veg, and Tortillas, right? Wrong! You get Meat and Veg and when you ask for tortillas, the server says you can buy a side of tortillas for an additional charge. What are fajitas without the tortillas? It’s an integral part of the dish. That is all, you have been warned.. .

Really good Guac! Place is really good for the price and amount of food they give. I came here for brunch on Cinco De Mayo and got a burrito with Chorizo. It was so good and filling I instantly grew a baby and named it Javier. The staff is pretty cool and chill. I would come here again. The food taste funky fresh!

My friend and I planned on racing out of work for some amazing happy hour-ness at SunBurnt Calf BK. We were both mutually devastated when we arrived, realizing that it was closed for renovations. Both of our texts read as: «NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!» That’s how much I love Australia. So, we decided to check this place out literally across the street. We really just wanted a drink or two and noticed the sign on the sidewalk that said: $ 5 margaritas, $ 4 Sangria, $ 3 Tecate till 7pm. Not too bad. We were allowed to sit where ever we liked and given water. It took a pretty long time for our waitress to come back. Really we just wanted drinks and no food. It was a little busy. But not packed. There were about 4 or 5 tables outside, a few people on the bar and 1 or 2 other tables inside that were occupied. I even noticed at one point that the waitresses were standing, laughing and talking to each other instead of doing anything! After my friend finally almost stood up and threw something at our waitress we ordered a margarita and a sangria mixed with red and white wine. The margarita was so-so.. .. it seemed a little heavy on the sour mix and a little too sour for a marg. The sangria was watered down. Booo. After our one crappy drink we had the munchies and asked another server to send our ‘actual’ waitress over and we ordered chips and salsa. Though we wanted our salsa super duper spicy. It was pretty spicy I’ll give them that credit. They just mixed it with red chili paste. I’m prepping my taste buds for the Brick Lane curry challenge. But it was definitely bareable spicy without having to chug water. We ordered one more round. This time red sangria and it was much better. More dense and less watery. I can’t speak for the food at this place. Our neighboring table looked like they had some tasty mini soft tacos going on. But the service is just awful. I don’t want to spend my evening flagging down waitresses for two stupid cocktails and a bowl of chips. It makes me sad and mad inside.

This is one of those friendly/grungy Prospect Heights brunch places that’s low on frills and nice for a lazy afternoon. The food was decent – my huevos rancheros were not what I expected. The eggs were in the center of a giant plate of tomato sauce, all on a tortilla bed(for some odd reason I was thinking it would come wrapped in a burrito). Others in our group were pretty happy with their cast iron pot dishes, so maybe that’s the thing to get. The margaritas were nice and strong, though I really wish they offered a boozy brunch(even $ 8 adds up when iterated). But sitting on a sidewalk catching spring rays after a short race at the park was a beautiful experience.

I find Pequena to be a pretty good spot. They’re not the best Mexican around but I’m not gonna go to the same spots all the time. They have the 2nd best Tacos around(I love their fish Tacos) and the 2nd best overall Mexican around. It’s not expensive(I know places that try to rip you on Mexican. This place is average) On a nice spring or summer day, it’s nice to sit down outside and sip on a good margarita. I’d say definitely give it a shot, may end up being your favorite.

Great tacos! Simple, no frills, flavorful — just as they are supposed to be! The chicken, carnitas, and spare ribs tacos are my favorites! This is a great place to try if you are looking for simple yet delicious tacos. Be prepared for a small intimate dining area with lots of colors and decorations around you. Pequena also has an outdoor seating area, perfect if you are walking your dog and want to take a quick snack break. Be prepared with cash because this is a cash only establishment.
