Maddon Eric B DVM

Dr. Maddon and the entire staff at Park Slope Veterinary Care have been taking care of our Lola for most of her life, and were with her at the end. We couldn’t ask for better, more caring vets. On two occasions, Dr. Maddon saved Lola’s life. Our introduction to the clinic, when she had stopped eating for a long time, and a famous Manhattan animal hospital wanted to perform exploratory surgery. Dr. Maddon took a more pragmatic and less intrusive approach and correctly diagnosed her with IBS. She was given a shot and was better within an hour. That’s after weeks of visiting high-​falutin’ specialists. Another occasion, years later, he again looked at test results carefully, and realized that another vet had overmedicated her. He’s not afraid to challenge the obvious and ask questions. That may seem brusque to some, but I don’t need coddling, I need someone who’ll explore every possibility to keep my pet well. If you want your ego stroked, go elsewhere. If you want a vet who puts your animal first (and I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t) Maddon is your guy.

We had the opposite experience; however, when one is grieving or is about to lose one’s beloved pet, it is easy to misinterpret the doctor’s intention or meaning. This is not to invalidate your comments. I’m just saying.
We see Dr. V who had to put away one of our cats. A year and a couple of months later, our other cat developed cancer-​BAM! The news hit us like a ton of shit bricks. We love Dr. V and had hoped to see her; however, she was away. Dr. Maddon is the one who made the diagnosis and was enormously helpful and compassionate. We had to let her go October 17, 2012. Dr. M euthanized her. The following day, we got a call from another Dr. at the office who had seen our cat’s cytology results. He knew we had put the cat down, so he was calling to offer condolences.
I love this veterinary clinic. I don’t love when a cat dies. I didn’t even like cats until seven years ago. Now getting my heart broken.
Also, the docs at this clinic don’t give you the bum’s rush. You get lots and lots of time.

We had our cat, Phoebe, put down in 2010 by Dr. Maddon at Park Slope Veterinary Care, but only now am I able to complete this review. She’d had kidney failure for years, and, in spite of her otherwise sweet nature at home, she was extremely difficult to treat at home and at the vet. We kept her healthy and comfortable for as long as we could, but it became obvious, eventually, that her illness had taken over her quality of life. Dr. Vinitsky had been Phoebe’s doctor for a number of years, and I still wish we had been able to come back when she was available. One couldn’t ask for a more decent, compassionate, and qualified person of ANY health profession. Sadly, Dr. Maddon’s who we got. I’d dealt with him briefly before, and, aside from some easily-​ignored arrogance, he seemed perfectly capable at his job. However, on this day, he made a point of letting us know that he disapproved of something about us or our cat. Or something. He never shook our hands or offered condolences, and he had his assistant do most of the talking. He did manage to blurt out, with pointed indignation, that Phoebe was «ONLY 13?!» After the assistant corrected him (she was 15), he spent the rest of the visit indulging in subtle eye-​rolling and head-​shaking. Admittedly, I automatically respond to passive aggression with passive aggression, so I don’t know what his issues were. What I do know is that his behavior was unprofessional, obnoxious, and a little revolting for a person whose business has the word «Care» in its name. Having my last memories of my first cat shat on by the condescending attitude of this guy has, unfortunately, stayed with me, and it’s a mistake I’ll never repeat. I’ve even instructed my cat-​sitters to go elsewhere should an emergency arise and only Maddon is available. I find the rave reviews he’s received from other posters perplexing, but I can only report what I experienced.
