Imagine shutting out the motor traffic on the busiest street in one of your neighborhoods. Wherein you and the kids, dogs, or just your unencumbered self, can stroll, meander, dance, bike, meditate, do Thai yoga, munch, or scores of other activities across a dozen city blocks and check out any of hundreds of local businesses. That just happened for an entire afternoon on Sunday, October 12. Sunday Streets Berkeley is a joint effort of businesses, civic groups and the local community. It was presented by Livable Berkeley and the City of Berkeley, as well as the Downtown Berkeley Association, North Shattuck Association, Office of Mayor Tom Bates, East Bay Bicycle Coalition, & Ecology Center. OK, I copied this. You get the picture, they’re involved in the improvement of the community and in supporting their local businesses. Already in place in San Francisco and other cities, Sunday Streets will hopefully continue here with growing patronage from anyone wanting to get to know their city on a more intimate level… or get a free salsa lesson in the middle of Shattuck Ave. without dodging cars.
