South Berkeley Produce & Meat Market

Lots of fresh produce! So nice for a corner market. Also cheeses, salamis, and other things a corner market would usually shy from.

Definitely an oasis in a neighborhood otherwise entirely populated by low end corner stores. Very convenient to have a place in walking distance with decent produce, some spices, and a limited (but sufficient) selection of canned goods.
The produce is usually good quality, though a few times I have noticed it starting to spoil on the shelf, so definitely check it before you purchase it. The gentleman who runs the counter is very friendly. He also once saved me from buying a bad onion.
The prices are reasonable for produce, but the packaged goods are expensive, so I try to get those elsewhere when I can help it.
Haven’t tried the meats yet.
Bring cash if you’re only grabbing a few things — the credit card minimum is $ 4.

Finally — REAL FOOD in this neighborhood! This store is a refreshing change of pace from the usual corner market. Most prominently displayed is an impressive array of fresh fruits and vegetables. The rather small selection of «junk» food is out of the way, instead of piled right next to, and all over the counter — which must make our neighbor moms with little kids very happy!
Excellent meat, poultry and fish at the back of the store. Canned goods, fresh dairy products — it’s all here. Lots of great middle eastern stuff too: spices, packaged goods, prepared sauces and mixes. No more running to Berkeley Bowl for a bottle of pomegranate syrup for me.
Prices are just where you would want and expect them to be. GO THERE!
