Stop #3 of my 2016-tour-de-Solano-Restaurants, Cactus offers casual Mexican fare that you can take to go or eat in house. I got a pork burrito. It comes with chips. I also had Horchata. They have a salsa bar, making me wonder if this place is also related to some of the other Mexican joints in town. My burrito was great, and I always love chips, but the server behind the counter seemed tired and bored.

Horrible service, ok food. My friend ordered nachos and asked what kind of beans they had, wanted those beans but asked for no olives. It comes out with olives and no beans, which isn’t a huge deal. So we ask them to remake it, in which they responded by trying to not remake her food and saying that she asked for it that way. We argued and eventually they remade it, but after being treated rudely. And again, there are no beans on it!!! So she walks up and asks for a side of beans and the lady doesn’t say anything and walks away grabs a bowl of beans and hands it to her. There was no «I’m sorry» no nothing. Honestly it was their mistake and a simple I’m sorry would have been good. It’s not okay to mess an order up then be upset with the customer for asking to make it right. Will not return.

This place is not pure Mexican cuisine, but if you want some crazy good Californian-Mexican food you come to this taqueria. The crispy tacos are go think to get in my opinion and the service is always good.

Meh, I suppose local Albany residents come here for the organic meats and the kid friendly space. Load up on salsa and hot sauce because the food here is bland. The burritos are about 1⁄3 the size of a standard taqueria-probably good for the waistline. If your looking for Mexican food for your kids or grandmother this might be a good look.

I ised to come here 2 – 3 times a week but lately have beeN really dissatisfied. I really like their food but the service is terrible. The counter staff is extremely slow and forgetful and bad at taking phone orders. The staff at the college ave location is a lot more attentive and efficient. They recently raised prices and that combined with slow service makes me a lot less interested in coming here.

Hands down the best taqueria where I like to get tacos. I’m not always craving a taco but when I do, it’s a Catcus Taqueria taco. Other food items on the menu are good too. They have a variety of choices to choose from and the atmosphere in the restaurant is really nice.

Eating there for 20 years both Rockridge and Solano. Love it. Try the crispy chicken tacos

I guess it can depend on who cooks the food, but usually this place has pretty tasty food; been coming here for years! Yum! This last time Veronica was at the register and I love how she didn’t rush me like some of the girls before! Thanks Veronica!

Everything over priced. They charge for everything on your item. –lettuce, cheese, etc. charge everything individually. Be careful. Had better for less.

This is a pretty decent fast food Mexican place. If you get a soft chicken taco, be prepared because they are giant. Two soft chicken tacos have to be brought out on two separate plates. They also have really good guacamole here

Not impressed. This place was absolutely packed during lunch, we couldn’t find anywhere to sit inside or outside so we had to take our food home… and I just didn’t really have a good experience here in any way. I asked for two chicken tacos(on the menu) but without the cheese. The woman at the counter said that’s impossible because their tacos are pre-made… I look to the left at the enormous kitchen and then look to the right at the chipotle style assembly line and can’t possibly fathom how they couldn’t make a taco without cheese! I also was bothered that items on their menu — that I’m sure many people order — are pre made — not only pre-made but pre-made in such a way that the cheese couldn’t be removed. It is confusing. So I ended up getting the breakfast burrito, which was enormous but tasted okay. I was able to finish it all but I probably would never go back for it or for anything else here really.

Decent place. Has a fast food vibe, but the food was a bit slow in coming. They have a wide menu. We had enchiladas, which were ok; nothing to complain about nor rave about. And the chili relleno, which was actually very good. Though my tummy was not sitting right in the drive home… we also had nachos with cheese and beans… the cheese was really mild, and the chips are basically out of a bag. All in all, I’d go back if I was right there and really craving Mexican, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get there.

I have had issues with the chile rellenos here multiple times, but the remainder of the plate is always quite good. Beans and rice are always on point. The sauce is spicy, and seasoned to my liking. The chips and guacamole delicious. My complaint with the chile rellenos is that more often than not they are undercooked. Leaving the pepper hard and not easy to cut. The location on College Ave. always seems to get this dish right every time, making it hard for me to come back to this location. Solano is closer but the cooks at the College location have perfected it! Thankfully the manager listened to us about the chile, and when we went back they were fully cooked. I forget her name but she was really helpful and worked through our issue. All in all I like Cactus. It is reasonably priced, and has fresh delicious food. Definitely order the guacamole if your dining in!

We had takeout from Cactus tonight and they are just too inconsistent for 4 stars. They’re not even 3 stars tonight. Sometimes the food is really good and the next time it’s lacking. Last time we had takeout from them I ordered al pastor and it was succulent, w/fat chunks of pork and pineapple along the other accoutrements. Tonight the pork and pineapple were overcooked, shriveled up, almost dessicated. I didn’t finish most of it and I’m not sure I’ll be eager to try them again.

Cactus is mediocre at best. The service is inconsistent, and those working there make you feel as if you are somehow inconveniencing them when placing your order. Don’t even bother calling in an order, either. More often than not, you’ll end up on hold for way too long, and they’ll forget you’re waiting while they deal with in-store customers; leaving you to call them back and be put on hold again… usually the second time you call they remember you’re on hold. The food itself lacks flavor, and is very basic. Anything deemed«spicy» is not spicy by any means. The meats are often overcooked, and are either too salty or entirely bland. I have grown impatient with Cactus and their declining quality in food and service. There are far better Mexican restaurants in the area, Cactus needs to go!

Their street tacos are a perfect lunch. The chicken one is my favorite. They make their salsa there. It’s yummy. I really like the feel of the place. It is sweet and friendly. It beats Gordo’s even though Gordo’s tastes more authentic.

I’m annoyed. Tonight I attempted to order the pollo verde I’ve enjoyed at Cactus since college, and was told they don’t make it any more. I asked what types of chicken they now have and was told they now serve only one: grilled. No verde? No mole? Only grilled? Boring. I ordered it, and because it wan’t particularly good I didn’t know whether to be happy or sad that the portion was so small. Not the Cactus I remember, no sir. I also don’t like that you can no longer speak directly to the person making your burrito. The special bond only customer and burrito maker can share should be honored and nourished, not eliminated in a misguided quest for efficiency. Jeez — is it too much to ask that this place remain frozen in 1995?

Food: cheap food, large portions and great quality food Ambiance: a bit cramped but has a nice homey feel Service: you order at the cashier and you can see your food being made. Everyone is nice. They messed up my order once but were really apologetic about it and remade my order.

Best crispy tacos on the planet! The ingredients are always very fresh, particularly the lettuce. I’ve never seen such crisp, green, fresh lettuce anywhere else. I usually get the chicken tacos and my wife always gets the shrimp. Some places skimp on shrimp, but Cactus always gives us our money’s worth. I definitely recommend their salsa verde. Can’t get enough of the stuff.

Cactus is nothing fancy, and the food is good while not being over the top. The concept is simple. Order your taco type and filling, order sides if you wish and your number will be called. The décor, like the food, is no frills. There is a fountain, the walls are colorful, but nothing will stand out in your mind 2 days later(the number of days since I’ve been). The food is similar; it’s average, good even, but nothing memorable. I had a chicken taco with rice and beans and sampled a few salsas that were all decent. The guac was average as well. The real standout, in my mind, was the corn and red chili tamale, which was sweet but not overly so and delicious to the last bite. I’m not sure I’d hurry back, but Cactus is perfect when you’re not looking to longer over a long meal and you’re not ready to dish out top dollar. It’s fast, quick, and good enough.
