Thankfully this place closed quite a few years ago. I went in with a bunch of friends after a movie. We ordered. It took at least an hour to get some of our food. Some of the dishes were not what we ordered. And the food was pretty terrible. When they brought us the bill they had charged us more for everything than it had been on the menu. When we protested, they told us the menu had lunch prices, but it didn’t say so on the menu and they did not inform us of that. I was very glad to see it went out of business about half a year later. There is now something else in this space.

Went here once a few months ago looking for Afghan food in the east bay. Was very disappointed, as nearly all the dishes on the menu seemed to be Indian, there were several Afghani dishes crossed off the menu, and the few that weren’t crossed off were also unavailable the night we visited. No Kadu, no Aushak, no bulani(burani?). We ended up ording a few Indian dishes, which were pretty typical(decent, but not what we were looking for, Afghan food!) The place was deserted. We haven’t been back.

Located in the 1910 landmark Shattuck Hotel, this huge dining room featuring Afghan cuisine seems dramatically out of place in its historic surroundings. The menu offers a wide variety of lamb, chicken, seafood, and vegetarian dishes. and while the preparations are decent, they pale in comparison to those at the Helmand in San Francisco’s North Beach.
