There are two iconic bakery treats from my childhood that are harder and harder to find. They used to be completely ubiquitous at any bakery in the tri-state area, but in-comprehensively are becoming impossible to find. These two items are the black and white or half and half cookie and crumb cake, the kind that is ¾ crumb and ¼ cake. I was in the general vicinity of Mueller’s and made a special trip based on Unilocal reviews in regard to their crumb cake. When I arrived, I was thrilled to notice that they had black and white cookies as well and bought one of each. The crumb cake came in a bunch of different variations, frosted, powdered, with jam… I went for a piece of the classic frosted and one black and white cookie. The crumb cake was pretty good, there was plenty of crumb but I found it a little bit dry and the cake part, which I hoped would taste like a soft buttery pound cake, was super dry and had no flavor. On the other hand, it was still good enough to bask in it’s existence and eat my way down memory lane. I saved the black and white cookie for last as it is really what I search for. A few years I found the Holy Grail at Baldanzas Bakery, it was perfect, a delicious, huge buttery cakey cookie, frosted in the exactly right consistency with vanilla and chocolate icing. Sadly, Baldanzas closed awhile back and I continued my search. Sure you can buy them at the grocery store now in mini form, but those knock offs have absolutely nothing to do with the cookie that I knew. With great anticipation and hope, I bit into the black and white cookie at Meuller’s and… no…(sigh). This is an extremely thin cookie frosted with what appears to be the right kind of vanilla icing on one side and some kind of buttercream chocolate hybrid on the other. Major disappointment. So I would recommend the crumb cake, there were also many many other delicious looking baked goods that I did not try. On the other hand, save yourself the let down and stay away from the black and white cookies.

Don’t leave Mueller’s without their crumb cake. Either iced or powdered sugar, both are remarkable!!! Breads, rolls, cakes and cookies are superb! Locals and visitors alike must stop in if they haven’t already!

I have never been to the location but… MULLER’S MAKESTHEBESTCRUMBCAKE I HAVEEVERHADINMYENTIRELIFE. This is a very intense statement coming from me, because I have such a sweettooth. Extra crumbs on top covered in frosting, with a thin(not too thick like Starbucks) layer of cake that is sweet, smooth, buttery and addicting. I am dreaming about having another piece right now, and it is hard to hold back.

Jamie and the employees at Mueller’s are as stellar as their baked goods. I was concerned about ordering a crumb cake to San Antonio, Tx. Jamie took my order and was patient, kind, understanding, extremely knowlegeable and helpful. She went above and beyond what any employee would do. In a day and age where customer service is non existant, Jamie(and the other staff) is the exception. I truly hope the owner appreciates the value of their employees, great customer service is impossible to come buy these days. Jamie and the other staff are a true asset to this bakery — oh and did I RAVEABOUTTHEBAKEDGOODSYET? Amazing and delicious EVERYTHING– come for the exceptional customer service and baked items.

i came up to bay head for a wedding/long weekend. mueller’s bakery is very well known and the house that we rented was conveniently located right around the corner. i stopped in one afternoon because i was hungry(looking for a something like a sandwich) but they only had bread and pastries so i left. the pastries looked awesome so the next morning i had my husband bring me breakfast in bed: coffee and crumb cake. i had the plain and powdered and the powdered is definitely where it’s at! i hear in the summertime the lines can get pretty long but it moves quickly!

Delicious treats! Especially the powdered coffee cake(Or is it crumb cake?). One caveat, long line on summer weekend mornings. If you know you will need something, call a day ahead and they will have it ready for you then(Skip the line!).

This place makes some truly amazing pastries, that’s for sure! We ordered a half sheet cake for my dad’s birthday which everyone raved about how good it was. We got cannoli filling with whipped cream frosting which a marble cake. Everything paired perfectly together. Their black and white cookies were also very impressive as is the crumb cake. This place is worth the wait in line. One more note: when they call your number you better be ready, because they move through very quickly.

The bakery may have wonderful products but the service was incredibly rude. I called in asking if they had a product and the girl repeated my question as if I were asking for her to chop her finger off. Then she asked someone else and they said three. I live in Lavallette and was going to head right over so I asked if I could put it on the side and she said«No, we don’t put anything on hold.» Before I could finish asking and hung up on me. So disappointing.

Literally the most amazing crumb cake to have ever hit my mouth! I have dreams of the crumb cake and when we get the chance to stop by the bakery we buy a lot of them and they don’t last! My favorite is the iced but the powdered sugar one is just as amazing! The brownies are delicious as well they r so moist and fudgy. And on Sunday I bought an apple crumb pie to bring to my parents for dessert and everyone demolished it! Can’t say enough good things about the sweet treats that come out of that bakery!

It is a blessing and a curse living near here! It is my go to spot for bringing treats to friends and various occasions. Reasonably priced and always fresh and delicious. Jelly donut is ridiculously good, and my old standby is the glazed crumb cake. Wow. Recently tried the applesauce cake and it was incredibly moist and flavorful. Don’t think, just go!

I understand high school students need jobs, I applaud hiring them. However there needs to be an adult in place at all times. Kids just are not equipped not handle people with issues effectively. I counted 4 teenagers on my recent visit on Sunday Oct62014 Only one was actually waiting on the line of customers at 130pm The other two were busy beginning unloading the shelves of baked goods I presume in anticipation of the 3pm closing. The other was busy spraying windex all over everything. When I was asked my order the young lady was way less than cordial and when my husband corrected her on our order we got the full eye roll!!! Wow, that’s very poor customer relations indeed. Thais young lady does not belong in the service business All 6 of our donuts were lumped in a bag, really a box would have been much better suited Just because you think your the only game in town, you still might want to do a good job. Overall average product, awful service

Very good and messy coffee/crumb cake. The cake is probably a half inch thick while the layer of cinnamon crumble on top is around one inch thick. Strange proportions but it works because the cinnamon sugar part is what tastes good anyway! I usually don’t like coffee cake but this was quite nice but a tad too sweet for my tastes. Tip: microwaving helps with eliminate some dryness.

A good bakery and local institution. Coffee is better than Dunkin and their cranberry nut bread is excellent. Best in the area and worth a stop. Very crowded from 8 – 11.

This is my dad’s favorite bakery on the shore. He’ll go out of his way to make sure he gets his baked goods here… and he is an impatient man. Delicious apricot dainties, crumb cake, cinnamon buns, and bagels!

Delicious breads & pastries at reasonable prices. A long wait on a Saturday morning(around 10 a.m.) but so worth it. The line moved at a pretty steady pace. You can pour your own coffee while you wait which is nice. The ladies were friendly once my number was finally called. Cheese Danish was fabulous!
