It is hard to believe but in truth Bakersfield has one of the best, and longest, bike trails in California. I ride the west end of the trail two to three times a week from Finish Line to Enos Lane and back for a total of around 21.5 miles. When we went out on March 10th we saw our resident bobcat around mile marker 6. I can’t say if this is the same one we saw at the end of 2014 but it looked healthy. This time no coyotes although we saw them last month. We also saw squirrels, rabbits, hawks, quail, road runners, meadow larks, scrub jays, crows, and even a flock of red winged black birds in the trees surrounding the parking lot at Enos Lane. Most of the people riding are on two wheel bicycles unlike us who ride recumbent trikes. There are only a few other trike riders although every year the Ventura County Recumbent Riders spend a couple of days in Bakersfield for their TWERKy Trot ride. TWERKy Trot 2015 is tentatively scheduled for April 4th and 5th. The ride is free and all bike and trike riders are welcome to participate. The first day is usually the east end starting at Beach Park. The second day is usually the west end starting at Beach Park to Enos Lane and back again.

The Kern River Valley Bike Trail is a 20 mile paved trail that runs from Enos Ln to China Grade Loop(see website for a PDF of the trail map) along the Kern River. It makes for incredibly convenient and safe bike travel, except at night when there are questionable people lurking under the overpasses. I would not use the bike path after sunset, but any other time is great! I use it to get to work most every day and I also use it to travel downtown. The«exit» for downtown is Beach Park, which pops up after the skate park and horseshoe pits on your right going eastbound. The park takes you right out to Oak &21st. There is a bike like all the way downtown on 21st Street, which is an incredibly picturesque neighborhood. Be prepared for a throwback to quaint 1950s America. It is nice that Bakersfield has such a well maintained bike path through the city. I often see ground maintenance drive sweeper vehicles to remove pebbles from the bike path, which is wonderful for my road bike tires. Please keep Bakersfield clean by picking up your and other’s trash along the bike path!
