K & T 2 Quality Meats

I’ve gotta say I love this place because it’s a local butcher and has a nice selection of meat. BUT EVERY single time I come in and order something I question the hygiene of the place and whether I’ll be coming back again because of it. The men who work there are never wearing gloves and just now the guy who was helping me was coughing and handling my meat. It’s gross. I’m gonna go home and remind myself that cooking this meatloaf in the oven tonight should kill the germs that are spread around but honestly, SHAPE UP! It’s not hard to wear gloves and be considerate about food handling guys.

As others have said, K&T is a great Astoria resource (again WHY leave Astoria?). Always better priced than supermarket cuts, and if you are there early, you will likely see the meat arrive still on the hook and hoof, as it is wheeled to the back to be broken down. I have been coming here for years, and it is simply the best shop in the area IMO. Always friendly, and you will always get an opinion or question about what you plan to do with your purchase. If you need something boned out, cut up or whatever, just ask.
BONUS: I was SOOO happy to see a woman behind the butcher counter (score one more for job equality) but must say, she is really a trainee. It took 2 other guys to help her bone out my lamb (I could have done it faster), but I gotta give them a big round of applause for breaking the stereotype.(She totally gets how I plan to cook the meat, now if she can actually LEARN the butcher trade…)

Use this place for meet for my family as well as for my pets. Whenever I let them know it’s for my pets, they’ll give me a fattier cut at a cheaper rate. Great service, GREAT PRICES, and always great quality. I can’t complain. Definitely leave there feeling like I do much better than I would at Key Foods, since it’s fresh and I can get it how I want it (they’ll even trim and slice the chicken for you – takes out the work).

Went it today to buy sausage casings and 6lbs of pork shoulder; kindly butcher offered to grind up my purchase for sausage — great service. They also have a good range of less popular cuts at good prices (veal neck, lamb breast, faggots wrapped in caul fat etc).
Recommended.

I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed my butcher yet!
What ever I’m trying to cook, I tell them and they just give me the meat I need.
I can’t see me ever buying meat in a supermarket again.
The meat here really really tastes better…
I look forward to popping into the butchers on my way home.
This place is GREAT!

Twice now I’ve gone in to get product that they only carry frozen (blagh), or refused to break a pack for me… I don’t need 9 lbs of lamb at a time. also I’ve purchased fillet there and while browsing along the case, they cut it into small steaks for me… he apologized, but nonetheless, unless i ask for it that way, it doesn’t fly with me. I’m still gonna use them for my neighborhood butcher, but i gotta take a star away :(

Turkeys may never fly, but you will always find the foundations of a delish meal if you stop by K+T instead of relying on super market «fresh’.
These folks are totally nice. The prices are not bad. have gone to other butcher shops in area and have seen similar cuts priced higher. The difference between fresh ground chuck and what you buy at the supermarket is worth the trip.
Ask for one of the huge (tasty) chicken breasts and they offer to slice it down for you. A pound of chuck ground — no problem. can i get placed in two ½ pound bags? no problem. The rib eye steaks when grilled are gastronomical masterpieces.
When I asked them recently for a bone to bring to a friend’s dog they kindly took the time to chop some. (Yes, like a good horror movie screech from the back).
why go anywhere else?

OK– I love them!
I called yesterday to see if they had any beef brisket– they didn’t but the guy I spoke to said he would order some for me for tomorrow (today) — perfect for me. I went in this afternoon and lo and behold, there was a GIANT full cut of brisket waiting for me. I wasn’t expecting something that big (14.5 lbs), but I love left overs and the price was pretty good…
One of the butchers offered to trim it down for me– big plus since I don’t have very good butchering skills.
I want to use them for all of my meat needs, but I have to break my self of the supermarket habit. :)

What is it about butchers that makes them GRUFF?
I stopped by after seeing shell steak at 4.99 a pound. The guy did offer to customize my steaks. I got three one pound steaks… gonna grill em up tonight and finish the review!
