Just went through the drive through and the workers were rude and cursed. Not pleased with the service at all.

Used to come here all the time but the past few recent visits have been bad. Went inside and ordered an app and an entrée about a month ago. Entrée came out before my app. When they did bring the app out it was wrong. Told them to just take it off my bill because at that point i was half way finished with my meal. 2 seconds later I hear the waiter scream through the kitchen«cancel that chili» along with other employees asking why and complaining followed by everyone looking over at my table. Very unprofessional. Another encounter here a couple weeks ago, I drove through the drive thru around 10pm to get a late night burger and fries. Skimmed the menu quickly then informed the male employee I was ready to order. I hear nothing. Waited about 5 minutes then very rudely i hear«Um hello?!» «Are you gonna order?!». No reason to speak to anyone, let alone your customers, like that. A simple«What can i get for you» would have sufficed. I went elsewhere.

I gave 5 stars because the wait staff is well trained, the cooks are quick and accurate and the management takes the time to handle anything that comes up. It’s a burger joint! Their steakburgers are the best around — not on a steam table for sure! And you can get a salad or chili in place of fries(all of which are very good). There are always coupons and if you don’t have one the $ 4.99 menu is very filling either through the drive-thru or inside. If you have a problem and you don’t tell the manager it is your fault if you are unhappy because they are the best! I wish all the restaurants in the Alton/Godfrey area had their employees trained here! Service would definitely have a new name in town if they did! My only tip to management would be your hash browns should be brown — not white but that is a personal preference and when I tell my waitress — I get them brown!

I used to love Steak and Shake but anymore their food is so greasy you can barely eat it. Also they dont know what heat is in there. Its freezing whether you go in the winter or the summer.

Great 50’s feel. My favorite meal is; double cheeseburger, fries and a cup of their chili. The place is always clean. Large selection for a fast food restaurant

Hello I didn’t know that Steak and Shake has a happy hour. You cant get much happier than with a strawberry shake and it be half price. I went through the drive thru. The lady quickly took my order, but did not give me a total. She told me $ 1.63, and I asked her to repeat… Her response«Its happy hour.» Okay. I paid and grabbed my drink, however, she did not wipe off the cup and now I have sticky strawberry on my hand. Great strawberry shake…

This Steak n Shake is a true Alton establishment. I have a lot of fond memories from coming here late at night and being served by the dead-eyed middle aged blonde waitress who seems not to be working there anymore. I think she probably hated us, but then again, she hated everyone. A lot of people like Steak n Shake fries, but I have to say I never did. They are too small, and it’s awkward to eat them after you put ketchup or cheese on them unless you use a fork, which is less enjoyable. But everything else here is great. I never leave Steak n Shake without having a shake, usually one of the side by side shakes. Some of the seasonal shakes are good. The frisco melt and varieties of the chili mac tend to be my go-to entrees, as I look for more complex flavors than the standard steakburgers can provide(although those are usually good, too). I’m not gonna say that I always get great service here. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don’t, and sometimes the food is better than others. But if it’s after midnight and you’re looking for a place in Alton that’s open and you’re liable to find someone you know to chat with, or else some good weirdos to look at, Steak n Shake is your place. There’s really never a bad reason to go here. I’ve been with friends, with family, on dates, after a party, after the downtown bars. I’ve even gone by myself to sip coffee and read a copy of Hamlet. My tradition is to always get a gumball on the way out.

All Steak ‘n Shakes are not the same, when it comes to serving breakfast. The one near my home in STL serves up a fantastic breakfast, but this one was just sad. I would of been better off going to the IHOP down the street and paying full price instead of trying to save money with a coupon. Let me start by giving the positives which really make this a 2.5 Stars( Unilocal needs to give us the power of the half) review. My waitress was friendly and hustling being the only server working. My Hash-Browns was crispy and a large serving. They also got my eggs done right, I like over medium and most places either over or under fry them. Negatives; only got a half cup of coffee to start out, had to wait for fresh to be made. My refill was hot & fresh, but I was done eating and only enjoyed two sips. Even though my eggs were cooked correctly, they were greasy. The biscuit, was hard, dried our and almost flat as a pancake. I will revisit this location for a steak-burger, but it is out of my breakfast rotation.

Nasty! This place has such greasy burgers! The only great thing about Steak n Shake are their shakes… they are amazing. The food is not quality, but it’s a typical fast food place… although I think McDonalds is better. Overall they deserve the 2 stars I have given them.

This is a beautiful Midwestern delicacy. The steakburgers are delicious, and having an opportunity to get something besides just french fries as a side is refreshing. My favorite is the baked beans. Anything with them makes it a win. It’s usually pretty quick, although when I’ve eaten here twice, we sat down inside and hadn’t tried the drive thru. Worth a stop in if you have a try.

Nothin beats a good«steakburger,» fries and a huge ass milkshake after a night of hootin and hollerin like good olé boys in the Midwest. Still cracks me up when you walk in they ask«Smoking or Non?» Like some invisible wall between the sections somehow manages to keep the entire place from smelling like smoke. Yeah…
