I used to go to this shop fairly often. The food is ok and the portions were generous… until the menu changes hit. Now there is no free bonus food and the portions are quite small when compared to before.

The food is good overall. They deliver the fastest I have ever seen. I did not like that I have multiple times asked for provolone cheese on my food and they put some other cheese. It taste like white American cheese. But I still would recommend everyone to try Their steak and cheese sub.

Everything is good my favorite is the wings and fries can’t regret it, but everything else is pretty much your original Chinese carry out good place to go for a nice meal tho

Not a sub shop really… Its Chinese carry out place with subs on the bottom of the menu… Who ever heard of a sub shop with mostly Chinese food on the menu! Definitely shouldn’t be called a sub shop maybe Chinese food with subs & only 3 cold sub choices!!! And take the food to go because the dining room is gross and dingy!

DC residents of a certain age will wax nostalgic about the corner bulletproof Chinese carryout they used to loiter in before or after all-ages punk/go-go shows at 930 Club, WUST Music Hall, and the Howard Theater. You’d get your wings & mambo sauce, your steak & cheese(L/T/M), and your fries and sit on the curb and pound the grease down before you headed home at 3am. Relive those thrilling, artery-clogging days of yesteryear with an order of deepfried pork chops and crinkle cut Ore Idas(tell them to «fry them hard»). I have no idea how the«Chinese» food is because I can’t get past the wings, pork chops, and steak & cheeses. I suppose you could eat here, but it’s incredibly depressing. Get a to-go order, crack open that styrofoam so the fries don’t steam up and get soggy, and GTFO if you know what’s good for you. PS: I’ve never gotten violently ill off the food here. I give Johnny’s Sub Shop my second highest rating: Four Toilet Seats Up!

I only come here for the chicken wings when I have a craving for them. I will drive here all the way from Fairfax & back just for these wings. They really don’t have tons of flavor just lightly salted. You can eat in this place if you desire but i do try to get my wings before the sun goes down to be cautious lol! Don’t care too much for the sides(rice or fries) but the chicken wings are pretty solid!

Very unprofessional!!! Vert Rude!!! I must admit the food is ok. Over priced but ok. If you can deal with being talked down to, go with this company. Otherwise find another place.

All I wanted was a good steak sub. Yes that was to easy and should have read the review. I did not wanted hot wings. I was not in to American Chinese food. I wanted a sub and pay my price. Here my review. steak was dry and wish it was cooked medium and gotten sick over it. Don’t worry it’s well dune. Mushroom didn’t taste like it was cooked in it was out of a can. Yes I should have order extra cheese and didn’t. and with the rest. Coke and steak and cheese egg rolls. Yes dry as hell. I will never order from another Johnny’s Sub shop again.

Ah, Johnny Sub Shop, how you have been maligned in the reviews. Yes, you may not be the prettiest debutant at the ball, but I guess some of the others on your dance card are just concerned about a girl’s looks and not what she’s cooking in the kitchen. I have danced with you on many occasion, and you have never disappointed me. Yes, my old friend, you have always offered some tasty treats with savory subs and some pretty interesting Chinese food options; I’m a big fan of your steak and cheese egg roll. Yes, Virgina/Dana, there is a sub master here, and they do in fact sell subs(you just need to walk in and take a look at the menu). Now, I haven’t had many Chinese meals here – just egg rolls – and I wouldn’t use their dining area, for it is a bit dingy, but I would travel 15 minutes for a Johnny Sub any day of the week.

I would like to have given this place 0 stars, but it wasn’t an option. I called to order my dinner, and they told me 40 minutes. That seemed a bit long for what essentially amounts to Chinese fast food, but ok. An hour later, they still didn’t have my dinner to me. I called to cancel the order and the guy tried to argue me into waiting longer for it. Save your time– don’t bother.

Everyone giving bad reviews on this place based on just their experience — I’m sorry for you. Fortunately, I’ve never had a bad experience. The food is AMAZING and since I live right down rt. 1, they deliver for a small fee. The food is always piping hot, delicious and filling. I recommend the chicken cheese steak or the chicken wings. Never had any of the chinese food, but I’m sure it’s just as good.

Hmmm. .. I may be a little biased because I chipped a tooth on a chicken wing from this place. That was obviously the last time I had anything from Johnny’s. Thank Goodness it was a back tooth or they might have gotten their front window egged — just kidding — kind of. Anyhoo even when it didn’t injure me, it didn’t satisfy me in the least bit. To say there’s better chinese food out there is a SEVERE understatement — I mean I would definitely hope so. As you probably inferred from the name, they also sell equally disappointing sub sandwiches. It’s not all bad, it could have made me nauseous — that’s the only reason they got a second star.

Don’t do it. This may be the only review that I haven’t tried the food. It was THAT bad inside. Walked in and walked right out. Scarier than Taco Grande. Kind of deceiving if you ask me because they don’t sell SUBS!
