So., after a long time of having a few of guitar building projects left at the wayside, I finally went to the tool library. I had a few people during my travels suggest the Tool Library as a valuable and affordable alternative to buying expensive tools for one off jobs. After reviewing their website I was surprised by how much they have to offer. Their inventory is quite extensive in fact. Their website is easy to navigate and it actually will show you what tools they have as well as which tools are currently on loan. As mentioned by other reviewers, the cost is actually quite low when you consider that many tool would cost roughly the price of buying into the co-op. I paid the upfront fee and the yearly fee as well as rented a power tool for: $ 52.00. So for comparison I bought a heat gun to remove old paint from an electric guitar to the tune of $ 54.99. The heat gun is great, but it isn’t really a tool I can see myself using frequently. Power tools cost a small fee to rent and the rental time is quite short: five days. So for someone like myself who works in the evenings I usually would require a week before I could return borrowed tools, luckily the gentleman at the counter said I can phone to extend the time if need be. Apparently they recently started being open on Fridays which was supposedly not a regular thing for them. So in short the Tool Library is wonderful resource, the staff are helpful the location is not far off the beaten path and is quite easy to get to via skytrain, vehicle, bike, bus, longboard or boot.

Holy cannoli! This place is amazing! For a super low yearly cost, you can take out a huge range of tools for a week to build your DIY anything. Gardening tools, routers, all kinds of saws, foldable saw horses, handtools for artisan woodworking, a dolly… Walking in should fill your imagination with possibilities. The tools are rugged but in good shape. The short time line on the rental motivates you to get that project finished, rather than let it languish in the corner. Plus they hold regular workshops so you can learn how to use the tools properly. This is exactly the kind of community-based service Vancouverites need and should line up around the block to join!

This place is a blessing to any and all DIYers in the Vancouver area. I curently live outside of Vancouver and am still very excited that I can borrow just about any tool I need for no cost(other then the low up-front fee and yearly membership of 50 $ combined) with just a short drive. It has already made my life easier and I can’t wait to use their services time and time again! The only draw back is the not so normal hours of opperation but they do make sence. Get on board.
