Good, the mala yummy pot is a bit overpriced and the waiter didn’t explain what the dish was.

There hot and sour soup was amazing. I find it a hit or miss with most Chinese restaurants versions of hot and sour soup… But this place does is REALLY good. My new favourite Chinese restaurant to eat at is here. A must try.

This place has been on my list of places to try out for a long time. I finally made it up there as I had to go to the brewing store across the street. I decided on just getting take-out because it’s a cold and rainy night and I just wanted to get home. I read several reviews and wanted to try out something from the Chinese menu. I decided to get the noodle in soup with beef slices. I also got a meat spring roll. The soup was delicious — very flavourful. The spring roll was good as well — noting exceptional but it hit the spot. I thought the soup might be a bit spicy but it wasn’t at all. I’m definitely going to go back again, to try out more of the offerings. Next time, I’m hoping to get something with some spicy bite to it!

Pretty good food. The service was really slow and when I waked in the waitress was asleep in the last booth. She wasn’t happy about being woken up to serve a lone woman. I had the beef fried rice ands hot & sour soup. Very good prices and good food. I will go bacl

We went finally on Wednesday, the place was semi-busy which was a good sign. They have a quaint little 25ish seater and it’s clean and in good condition. We sat and were greeted instantly by a server, given menus and drinks. I ordered the combo with beef and broccoli, fried rice, chicken balls and a egg roll. My wife got the Szechwan noodles I believe it was. We also got a appetizer steamed dumpling. The dumplings were great and the dipping sauce was tart and sweet at the same time. The mains arrived and the portion size was amazing!!! There was app much food that my first thought was that it must be poor quality, wrong!!! The food was wonderfully seasoned and cooked perfectly. Some local places make the fried rice taste burned, not here, this was perfect. The beef and broccoli was great as were the chicken balls. My wife loved her noodles, they were the right amount of spicy. We left stuffed and happy and the bill was insanely reasonable for the quality and quantity you get. Will be back for sure.

You must order the mala yummy pot. It is so spicy and so full of flavor. We decided to head here for dinner to try the mala yummy pot after reading all of the great reviews and it was well worth it. We had it with the chicken wings and the tofu and it was so delicious. We also got one of the stone pots but the mala yummy pot was the star of the show. It is an absolute must try!

As my self-designated month of Chinese food exploration continued in February, I had to give Loong 7 a try after reading some great reviews and seeing some even better looking pictures. Deciding to make this place our Chinese New Year meal, my fiancée and I hopped on the #7 for a long ride up Robie, but luckily there are stops essentially right in front of the restaurant. It’s a relatively small restaurant, with 10-ish tables and booths. I could have counted them quite easily actually, as each table oddly had a number next to it. I’m not sure I’ve seen that anywhere else and I don’t know why it’s necessary at a place with so few tables, but hey, it was no skin off my back. Despite the civic address numbers on the walls, it’s really quite cozy, with the wooden beams along the ceiling and mixed palette of yellow, orange and peach. After ordering some jasmine tea, we pretty much went all-in on the authentic Chinese items from the back of the menu, starting off with an order of dumplings, stir fried veggies for some greens, the stone bowl and Mala Yummy Pot. I didn’t know what those last two really entailed, other than a few pictures and brief descriptions from review here, so the waitress was kind enough to fill me in. Ten little steamed dumplings came out first. The filling was pretty much all pork, a bit salty(which is good) and tasted similar to your typical sausage meat(of the non-Chinese variety). My only complaint was the slightly dried out edges of the wrappers that were on the chewy side, but otherwise they were quite good. Our mains came out next, and I was immediately glad that we were seated at a table for four as we had enough food for at least that many people. The stone bowl with chicken and the stir fried veggies were on par with most family-style servings at other Chinese restaurants, but the Mala Yummy Pot was absolutely massive. Granted I did get it with both tofu and chicken wings, making it a large, but this was BIG. The stone bowl had small hunks of bone-in chicken and a couple hard boiled eggs of unknown origin in the centre of a neatly arranged ring of broccoli florets, with broth and noodles(possibly tripe) underneath and green onion and whole dried chilis for garnish. We eventually assumed that the eggs were duck eggs as they were too small to be chicken eggs and too big to be quail eggs. They were fine, but I did wish that they had been soft boiled instead, to add the rich yolk to the broth. The chicken had a great flavour(no boring, dried out chicken breast slices here!), although the tiny bits of bone in each bite were a bit of a distraction. The broth itself had a nice little kick from the odd chili pepper in it. And yes, all of this was in a ceramic bowl. The stir fried veggies were a mix of broccoli, zucchini, red pepper, snow peas, cabbage, mushrooms and onions, so it was a nice little spread to make me feel better about all the other food. They were expertly cooked, tender crisp and moist, with a sauce that was much more flavourful than your typical veggie dish at a Chinese place. Undoubtedly, the Mala Yummy Pot was the delicious piece de resistance of at least my meal. Basically served in its own wok, it is several times larger than the stone bowl, full of chicken wings, sizable hunks of fried tofu, and a terrifying amount of chili peppers. This and some rice would easily be enough food for four hungry people. You pay a good bit for the large, double meat dish but you definitely get your money’s worth in the amount of protein alone. Then there’s the fact that it’s damned delicious. The flavours of the spices, especially the also prominent Sichuan peppercorns, reminded me of the dishes that I had several years ago on my trip to China, and while it might not be my bag for everyday eating, it was refreshing to finally have here in Halifax. The big pieces of tofu were probably the best I’ve ever had — packed with flavour and spice, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, it was more like a spicy slice of fried cheese, than the tofu that inhabits carnivores nightmares and jokes. The jasmine tea was just the right temperature so that the tea didn’t get burned(heads up Starbucks and Tim Horton’s!) and our waitress kindly offered to refill the tea’s water midway through the meal. I have to say that service was really quite good. It can be hit-or-miss at any family-run spot, and language barriers only exacerbate things, but our waitress was fantastic. She helped explain dishes, checked in just the right amount during our meal, and was nice and friendly. What more could you want? We ended up leaving with enough food for a large meal for two, which heated up wonderfully in a frying pan the next day, as I figured a microwave would do the tofu no favours. Loong 7 definitely lived up to its burgeoning reputation here on the interwebs. I don’t know what their Canadian Chinese food is like, but with how good things like the Mala Yummy Pot were, I may not ever know.

I think this will be my new go-to Chinese spot! Went with a group of 4 and we all decided on a different combination plate. The combos were fairly cheap($ 10−14ish) and you get a good amount of food! We all left full and satisfied. The food was very fresh and arrived quickly and hot. So good! They also have an authentic Chinese menu and many other options outside of the combos but I haven‘t tried those so I can’t comment. I’m sure they’d be great though. The waitress was sweet and she checked in often to make sure we had water and that everything was ok with the food. No complaints at all about service! Also, for anyone who thinks wifi matters while you eat, this place has free wifi! All in all a very nice spot with delicious food. I’m excited to go back!

Ate here for the first time tonight. I had the sliced beef stone bowl. It was absolutely delicious. The beef was melt in your mouth tender and the soup had a lovely balance of flavors. I ordered the large and couldn’t quite finish it. I’ll be back.

Loong 7 is a new establishment on Robie Street that is located where the old Pars Restaurant was before they closed up shop in November. Having lived in this part of the North End most of my life, I have seen several businesses come and go over the last few years, so I was cautiously optimistic that Loong 7 would buck the trend. It’s not a large eating spot; however, the staff seems to have done a great job in making each and every customer feel important as we noticed on this night. As a previous poster mentioned earlier, the restaurant has a large number of selections ranging from ‘North American’ Chinese food to authentic Chinese cuisine; the latter being slightly more expensive as most of the food actually does come from China. I ordered combination plate 16(egg roll, lemon chicken, rice, and vegetables) while my buddy had the eggplant and noodles. There were only 2 other groups in the restaurant at the time, so we did not have to wait too long for the food. The staff were quite friendly and there was a funny moment when the waitress seemed surprised that my food was good for some odd reason. The only issues I had with the visit was the vegetables were a bit scorched and we had to wait close to 15 minutes for the bill after we finished our meal, but they made a good impression on both of us and we will definitely return in the near future.

It has finally happened. Real Chinese food in Halifax. If you are done suffering through any number of sad sac chicken ball and chop suey menus all over town, prepare yourself for the treat that is regional Chinese cooking. Not just any region, but northern cuisine. A variation of mala(literally«numbing» «spicy»…or so wikipedia tells me) foods and subtle clean flavors — it is my most favorite of cuisines. Shandong may do fish better, and Cantonese may be more recognizable but Sichuan has mala magic. What makes everything better at Loong 7 is that the chef is a young guy brimming with intense nerdy food energy — he is proud of everything he puts on your plate especially if you are ordering from the second half of the menu. The first part are the traps… just move on to the chef’s specials. The tingle you will feel is sichuan peppercorn a spice that numbs parts of your mouth — in a pleasant intensify feelings kind of way and not Novocain at the dentist kinda way. Oh and its vegan friendly too, the tofu hot pot was confirmed by the chef to have no animal products. Ideally go with friends order the mala yummy pot and pick a few things to toss in the pot(if you see the menu this will make sense). Pair it with a more subtle flavor such as the slice beef hotpot, order some rice and tuck in. Better yet just ask to see the chef and tell him what you feel like, he will be happy to tell you whats what Long short — I went back three times this week. Each thing I have ordered has been amazing, especially the spicy fish dish. You owe it to yourself to go. *Don’t fear the dried chilies, they are much milder than they look and are there for flash rather than bang. **I heard a patron rattling his dentures at the chef, winging about how the restaurant’s dumplings were too thick.- his hand made, gorgeous dumplings were thicker than the patron’s store bought and this ticked them off. I saw a single tear in the chef’s eye. I had to choke back my own.

Simply put… WOW! This little Chinese restaurant is the newest addition to the north end of Halifax. Having just opened this week, they offer your traditional«Canadian Chinese» fare, but more interestingly they specialize in northern Chinese cuisine with a wide variety of «Chef suggestions» that are sure to please. We had the spring rolls(one veggie one meat) which were absolutely amazing! The meat spring roll came with BBQ pork inside… MYFAVORITE! As a second appetizer we had the Hot & Sour soup which was in my opinion, the best I’ve had in the city! For mains we had the pork belly stone bowl and the Mala Yummy Pot, two dishes I had never heard of before, both of which were amazing! The stone pot is almost like a soup with a succulent and rich beef broth with noodles, seaweed, Napa cabbage, broccoli and pork belly. You can choose your meat option with anything from lamb, sliced beef, braised beef, ribs, belly, chicken and shrimp… It was delicious. The Mala Yummy Pot is a stir fried dish served in a big bowl. Again, you have a choice of different meats and tofu, bean sprouts, cabbage, potato. It is amazingly seasoned with chilis and«prickly ash», a type of Chinese pepper that gives your mouth a numbing sensation. This feeling combined with the flavors and chilis was mind blowing. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming and were very helpful in navigating the menu with new to me dishes. I’m very excited to have them as my new neighbors and will be back soon to try their noodle soups and other dishes!
