I tried a spicy basil chicken stir-fry and it was acceptable. The potion wasn’t huge and it was a bit expensive for what it was, but it was alright on the whole. The chicken, as noted, is pre-cooked, so it’s not that great to be honest. All in all, Thai Express offers some nice alternatives to the standard fast food places in the City Centre mall food court.

This little place located in the food court in the lower area of East City Centre mall is a unique surprise. They provide you with the optional ‘North American’ taste, or the fiery hot and spicy ‘original Thai’ taste with each dish. I have had the chicken pad thai with the thin rice noodles the spice fired up my cold winter day. I also recommend the basic chicken noodle soup, the fresh chopped cilantro and spring green onions mix along with the slow brewed broth that makes a wonderful low fat meal.

I tried Thai Express at the recommendation of someone who said the food was absolutely spectacular. It wasn’t. Maybe I am spoiled by eating at so many delicious, authentic restaurants in Chinatown, but Thai Express just did not cut if for me. I had a Pad Thai, and the flavour did not come anywhere near others I have had. It was mostly noodles, with a few veggies here and there. It did not taste awful, but it was pretty much a generic stir fry. OK, this is fast food, so it is convenient and reasonably priced, but it just isn’t the same. I have heard some good things about the soups, so I may just give one a try the next time I am in City Centre Mall, but I am certainly not going to go out of my way.

You can get Thai food in fast food? I’m absolutely shocked! I was pretty excited to try Thai Express. I actually kind of like how more Asian foods are moving their way into fast food. The downside is that the quality usually seems to suffer. I tried the Thai Express in Edmonton City Centre. Everything on the menu looked delicious. They have a variety of rice and noodle stir-fry dishes and curry too. I played it pretty safe and had the sweet & sour chicken stir fry. This came with peppers, onions, carrots, and pineapple. The food was prepared right in front of me, but I think the chicken was already cooked or half-cooked, so it wasn’t really cooked fresh. When I got my food, I was pretty dissapointed. Most of my plate consisted of rice; there were barely any veggies at all and not many pieces of chicken. It was the breaded type of chicken, so it’s supposed to be crispy, but it was soggy. I did see them put it into hot water, when they cooked it. It didn’t taste that good either, and I threw most of it in the garbage. I’ll probably stick to restaurant-quality food, when I’m in the mood for Thai again.
