Not my first visit… won’t be my last! New Wind isn’t very far from where we live, and we swung in one night after a movie. The food is always great, and quick. It can get busy though. Always try their specials!

I have been a keen New Wind customer since it first opened in 2001 and I still am. This is because their food is authentic quality Vietnamese with a hint of Thai and is always deliciously fresh and flavoursome. I have introduced so many friends to this restaurant from interstate, overseas and locals and they always ask to go back there for a meal and are always pleasantly satisfied. Apart from the delicious freshness of the food it is still so inexpensive especially for the quality and freshness and it is probably one of the only BYO restaurants nearby. Sophie and Tom(sister & brother) are always friendly and welcoming. My favourite Vietnamese restaurant. Yum yum yummy!!!

Wasn’t bad but wasn’t great either. Service was great but the wait time was a while(90 minutes) and quality wasn’t anything to write home about. We had the Mongolian beef, chicken laksa and some rice paper rolls. All were okay but I wouldn’t be in a rush to go back. I’d recommend if you’re up that end of Chapel craving phở or laksa but skip if you’re after something quality.

This place serves Crocodile and Kangaroo. I didnt like my chicken dish though. They seemed to seat the restaurant on the sides and not the middle. Would be better to seat from front to back to give the customer a sense of fullness to the restaurant.

Not sure there are too many BYO restaurants along Chapel St these days so this place already got a tick of approval before arriving. Casual setting, with the typical Vietnamese favourites on the menu, the food is solid but probably not the best Vietnamese Melbourne has to offer. Service was quick, not Thy Thy quick, but good enough. Good for a cheap, relaxed dinner with friends. Enjoy!

This is probably my favourite Thai/Vietnamese/Asian Restaurant in Melbourne. Everything on the menu is amazing, and not to mention surprisingly cheap! There are so many things I love it’s hard to just recommend a few, but here goes; the starters I love are the traditional rice paper rolls they have Green salad with Vermicelli, Prawn and Pork and are served with peanut dipping sauce; healthy, tasty, incredible. I am also a lover of Tom Yum Soup, I often get the chef to make me one as a main rather than entrée because I just can’t get enough! The flavours are so fresh and tasty in this tomato based soup with fresh veggies, prawns, tofu and coriander, my stomach is rumbling just thinking about it! Some other favourites are the Nasi Goreng, The Green Curry and any of the Vermicelli Salads. All of which will cost you less than $ 14 leaving you just enough money to BYO a bottle of wine for only a fraction of a corkage fee.

So, unfortunate name notwithstanding, I was seriously hoping I would walk into this place and have me some delicious phở to rival Melbourne’s approximately 8 million other Vietnamese restaurants. Sadly, it was not to be. The would-be ambience of New Wind was positively ruined by a small child located somewhere in the(no doubt windy) bowels of the restaurant kitchen, who was screaming bloody murder throughout the duration of our meal. There were points in the evening where he would burst out of the kitchen, run to the tables and start smashing cutlery on the floor whilst blowing one of those party whistle thingys. It was… unnerving, to say the least. In terms of the food, New Wind bills itself at Vietnamese AND Thai– good in theory but the result was half the number of dishes done half as well. I had phở which was average at best, and the rice paper rolls were really hard. This restaurants saving grace is its SERIOUSLY cheap cocktail menu– $ 7.50 for a Long Island Iced Tea? $ 6.90 margaritas? In summary, all we could do was drink copious amounts in the hopes our drunken ears would block out the sound of screaming children. Good luck!
