Having lived in California this is definitely not authentic Mexican I mean it doesn’t taste too bad but not as good as the Mexican food I’ve had in Cali and wayyyyyy to overpriced!!! Around the $ 50 mark for two people. Eekk

Pretty excellent Chipotle impersonator in the heart of Prahran. The burritos are insanely huge but there are also tacos and burrito bowls(salads) available. The ingredients were good and the price was definitely right. It is hard to find a good deal in this town, especially on Chapel street, but Mad Mex is pretty good. I have tried some of the other ersatz Chipotles around and I think this was the best I have had. Not something earth shattering, but five stars for great value if you want something decent fast. Extra points for a great selections of hot sauces and for multiple, spicy salsas.

It’s nice for something different. However every time I go there I regret it because the meat just lets me down. The steak is really cheap(for them) i. e tough and chewy. The other toppings are rather plain and a bit like Subway sandwich toppings. At least they have gluten free tortillas though.

Alright, I understand this is a fast food joint but that’s no reason for the food to be just«eh». Quite honestly you could buy better corn chips at the supermarket. To be fair, the ingredients all seem fresh, the place is clean and staff friendly but after reading the other reviews I was so excited about finally eating some decent tacos(in Australia). I’m not comparing this place to Mamasita either, I’m just talking about good, basic, tacos and corn chips with guac. This place fell short and I won’t be going back. Food lacked flavour, corn chips didn’t taste fresh or home made. Don’t waste your time or cash, save your money and go somewhere else.

With the lack of quality Mexican food in Melbourne, Mad Mex is a welcome addition. If you’re looking for tamales and chiles rellenos, look elsewhere because this place is a burrito bar that also does tacos and quesadillas. The ingredients are fresh and there are bottles of the best hot sauce, Tapatio(from L.A.) on every table as well as sachets you can purchase for takeaway. They do pretty good churros compared to the churros I have had in Mexico. Their online nutritional calculator is also a great way to watch those carbs and fat content for the health conscious. Mad Mex sometimes give away freebies on their facebook page and twitter account, so it’s worthwhile to follow them.

There is no doubt about it — Mad Mex is pretty much a McDonalds equivalent for Mexican food. However, whilst I’d try to avoid eating way too much Maccas or Hungry Jacks, I’d be more keen to feast out on a Mad Mex more often. I’d say that the offering by Mad Mex easily measures up to that of the mediocre Mexican restaurants around Melbourne. The only differences are that it doesn’t cost you and arm and a leg and you don’t get the whole ‘restaurant experience”. For me though, I’d much rather have the option to get a cheap and tasty burrito rather than always having to go to a restaurant for mediocre food. For the concept, price and value, it has to be 4 stars.

Let’s be frank. It’s Mexican fast food. «Heavily inspired» by American chain Chipotle, Mad Mex brings affordable Mexican-inspired fare to the masses. Burritos, tacos and even salad bowls are made fresh to order. Well, that’s a bit misleading. Sure, they«assemble» everything fresh, but sometimes the meat sitting in the bain marie has the appearance of being dry and old. Best to go during peak times like dinner when they have to turn over the ingredients faster. I reckon as long as you concede that you’re eating a form of fast food, it a good, cheap and satisfying meal. I went when they first opened and paid extra for sachets of hot sauce, only to discover huge free bottles of hotsauce on all the tables. Bit of a facepalm moment. The corona chandelier, however, is pretty awesome. I am trying to drink my way to my own dining room feature.

Although I have never been to Mexico, and cannot validate claims that I have heard from numerous people telling me that Mad Mex is the most authentic Mexican food in Melbourne, I can say that it is firkin’ good. You do however have to put your thinking cap on when you have a look at the menu. There are all sorts of columns and numbers, as well as little descriptions for those who don’t speak Spanish. I am sure in Mexico when you order a burrito or taco the vendor just simply points to what is on offer and you simply say«si». I wish we had street food in Melbourne. Until that day finally comes I highly recommend Mad Mex, and don’t forget to use the chilli sauce on the table!

I was very pleasantly surprised by Mad Mex. Actually, make that extremely impressed considering I came with rather low expectations. I’ve already complained about the lack of good Mexican in Melbourne, there just aren’t enough good authentic options. Hopefully Mad Mex is paving the way for a culinary renaissance, because this place is seriously good. Don’t be put off by the takeaway diner feel. The atmosphere is buzzy and the food fast and delicious. There’s something nice about grabbing a tray, lining up and choosing your fillings. Well it’s nice when the food is this good anyway. All the favourites are here such as burritos, tacos, crispy tacos, quesadillas and nachos. And if you’re watching your weight you can grab a Naked Burrito, all the fillings minus the carbs. Although, this probably isn’t the most diet friendly establishment going. You’d hate to miss out on all that cheese, sour cream and guacaomole.
