In an anodyne world of pay per view, Apple TV and Foxtel on demand its nice to go and check out what used to be called Arthouse record and film type places. This one is really good. Why they were called ‘Arthouse’ I don’t know, maybe there was some art in them but then that would make my place an art house because I kept the kids school drawings? There are still some things that you can’t get easily. Which of course makes them highly desirable. Like Almodovar collections and rare out of print CDs. Title may not have them, but they will get them. A very cool place

Title is a little treasure chest of music, dvds and pop-culture books located on Crown Street in Surry Hills. The front room has a selection of music titles that are varied and more obscure than your typical cd selection at your local kmart and target as well as a small selection of DVDs including an animé section containing such cult classics like porco rosso and spirited away. The back room has a selection of vinyl, a bigger range of dvds and a range of music, fashion, and other pop-culture books. The best find when I was in the other day was a book titled Keep on Running: the story of island records, a book about the record label that launched the careers of such artists as Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. If you’re in the neighbourhood, pop in. You’re sure to find some item you’ll love amongst all the treasures in this place.

Title Music and Video is a spirited little shop that seems to be working hard to prove itself through the digital boom. And you know what, I think it’s succeeding. Nothing beats the feeling of actually flipping through albums(and I don’t mean with your index finger on your iPhone). In a store like Title where cheeky categories pull you in a direction you might not have previously gone, you’re more likely to stumble upon a treasure. I was tickled to find the film categories such as «Film Noir,» «Holliwood Cool» and«French New Wave,» proving that this shop houses much more than the latest Lindsey Lohan flick. With old yet rare films that might make your grandfather scratch his head in recollection, you can be prepared to jump out of the box. And if it’s music you’re after, don’t be shy. Again, I would deter you from trying to source anything mainstream here, but you could just get lucky and happen upon your favorite obscurity… and on vinyl. Let’s be honest, nothing sounds better than the honey smooth, yet vintagey rawness of a song played on vinyl. Grab a player at your local yard sale and head down to Title to bulk up your collection. You will be the instant envy of your coolest cool friends.

I really hate to say it, but stores like this are becoming obsolete in our world of digitized EVERYTHING. Regardless, it’s nice to hold on to the nostalgia of yesteryear, when it took more than 5 seconds to locate the record you want and physically insert it in an audio device. Thankfully, Title Music and Film is like a treasure trove. It is the ideal place that would have that CD or DVD you were always looking for, but never even knew it existed. What’s more, this is a great place to discover new music. The staff is helpful at suggesting new artists to expand your taste buds. I liked walking around Title. It reminded me of the days when I actually left my house to buy music or movies, and had to face the possibility that what I wanted was not in stock. Well, this place carries mostly rarities and cult releases on CD, Vinyl, and DVD. I guess the prices are pretty high, but you gotta think of these things as collectibles nowadays.

While it may not be as cheap as big corporations like JB HiFi, or as easy to get to as websites such as Amazon and the Book Depository, what Title has above both of these competitors is its range of interesting and obscure CD’s, DVD’s and books. If there’s a film you want that you can’t find anywhere, while I can’t guarantee that Title will have it, I can say with some certainty that they’ll most definitely have something equally as intriguing that will help sate your unusual filmic tastes for the meantime till you do come across that limited edition copy of «Hell Comes to Frogtown» with Rowdy Roddy Piper. I got a gift voucher for a birthday last year and I’d never heard of the small business which has shops in Surry Hills and in Crows Nest as well as online and interstate, but I went in there looking for nothing in particular and what I found was every thing in particular. So many books and films jumped out at me and shouted, «Buy me, you won’t find me again, I’m a rare commodity!» A magnificent marketing spiel; talking consumer products. As I mentioned earlier, they’re not the cheapest items, nor does the shop have the biggest range, though it is quite well stocked and even if you don’t find«Frogtown», you just might find«Night of a Thousand Cats», an Italian film about a recluse millionaire who feeds his cats beautiful ladies who have become ship wrecked on his island. My final words on Title? A shop both expensive and expansive but unparalleled for obscure anthology’s.
