We were looking for a new tasty Japanese spot in Surry Hills, and we found it here. We had a group of 6, and we may have gone a little wild with the ordering(I have a habit of over-ordering). But every dish was delicious, so what’s a little over-ordering when every bite is amazing? We got the Futafuma sake, which was described as fruity and complex, and it was exactly that. Other highlights: teriyaki wagyu rissoles, miso cod, and the furi furi(sp?) chips. And the portions are a good size(part of what contributed to the over-ordering), but again, who’s going to complain about portions that are too big? Not me. It’s a small space, but nice and intimate on a winter night, and the staff were all attentive and helpful. So, win.

Man, what a pleasant surprise this place is. Down Crown/Cleveland street, there are several choices for Japanese food but the girl and I wanted to try some place we’ve never been Saturday and Devonshire popped up in our heads. Found next to bustling Suzuya(which is a casual eatery kind of like Sushi Suma,) Katsu Yachiyo is much more intimate and home-y. For dinner it’s dim lit, and while the place can be considered casual, service is super friendly and attentive and this is definitely a great spot for a date in a burgeoning romance. The menu is a mix of traditional and modern Japanese. While we didn’t order any of the namesake Katsu, I have no doubt in my mind it is good based on the other dishes we ordered. We had the mini pork belly buns, Yachiyo-style chicken karaage, sushi/sashimi platter(small,) blue swimmer crab roll, and a reduction eggplant dish where the name escapes me. Everything was great. I love the soy sauce they use as there’s more of an umami flavour, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was mixed with oyster sauce. I kind of wish we noticed the chalkboard with all the daily specials as we would have loved to try some of them. Would love to come back to try other stuff… definitely would order any of those dishes again.

Only just recently discovered this little gem and am very keen to go back for more. We had about 6 share dishes between the 2 of us and found all of them to be faultless. I’m a huge fan of japanese food and eat it at every opportunity(including the legit stuff in Japan!). Well, these guys are the real deal — they know what they’re doing. Fantastic food, brilliant service. The restaurant itself is very quaint, but with great ambiance and atmosphere. They’ve got really dim lighting, so it’s not very conducive to taking photos. But who cares as you’ll be so preoccupied with the food that you won’t even bother with the photos! Can’t wait to return and try some of their other offerings. PS. Try the lamb croquettes and the soft shell crab tacos — really really good!

Perfect food. Everything on the menu is the best example of that dish. Sashimi heaven. Snapper carpaccio is not to be missed. Whatever the eggplant miso dish is called — get it. Very filling. Sake also great. A bit noisy but maybe that was just the loud table next to us. Lovely staff. Highly recommended.

An overlooked gem. Yachiyo sits next to another similarly cute looking Japanese restaurant and for a while I thought they were actually the same establishment. There is no signage at the front, but it’s the more darkly decorated and casually charming of the two. Dropped in for lunch. We both had the Sashimi lunch set which was essentially 6 little courses. Thick miso soup to start, then a green salad with a nutty dressing, some fresh warm edamame, a square of agedashi tofu and finally a plate of 6 chunky cuts of mixed sashimi. All fresh and well-prepared. Our server was the sweetest little lady, taking care with each dish and explaining to us the ingredients. At the end we were surprised with the included dessert — a dollop of rich and sweet chocolate soybean paste(yum!). If you put a jar of this at my desk — id easily nail whole thing. In a couple of hours. There was enough interest on the main menu(including some curious daily specials) to license a weekend dinner visit.
