This has been my St Kilda favourite for 10+ years. Perfect coffees, great simple food, a locals hangout.

So as many of you know I do not cross the Yarra very often so a venture out St Kilda way is worthy of a mention. Meet at Galleon Café for lunch? Yeah sure why not. The café is a bit like walking into a time warp or jumping into the set of a secret life of us. It is very St Kilda cool and there are people and dogs wandering around everywhere. The menu has some great breakfast options and I like the way you can build from eggs on toast cheaply and without hassle. I had the sweet potato and haloumi salad and it was delicious. To finish off they indulged me in an ice cream sundae and gave me extra topping on the side. This makes it an awesome place to be, I mean who ever gets and says no to extra topping on their sundae :)

Visiting from Los Angeles, California and really loved the breakfast! The ambiance was retro, with 1950’s music playing. Not the most beautiful café, but food does not disappoint. The Sweet Potato Basil Hash with poached egg looked as good as it tasted. The lemon butter and strawberry Pancakes were divine! They do fresh juices, we had a carrot apple juice which was wonderful. Highly recommend this place for breakfast, if you are looking for something yummy.

Absolutely delicious breakfast options that leave my belly full of goodness for hours afterwards. The sweet potato hash, so yummy. If you can manage it, go with a friend for brunch, get a savoury breakfast and a sweet breakfast and share them both, its a foolproof plan with the best of both worlds. Great staff members who deal with the bustling atmosphere with a good humour that makes you feel at home. Comfy booth seating and retro furniture almost make the place feel like your holiday beach house. You sometimes have to wait but its totally worth it especially if you’re hungry and there’s a haloumi salad on the specials board.

As many of my friends are vegetarian — the galleon is my top pick for breakfast in Melbourne. Their vegan offerings are tasty, the food is served warm and the coffee is consistently good. Their retro theme is reminiscent of my auntie’s house in the early 90’s giving the place a no-frills, casual, we’re-here-for-the-service vibe. Try and get there early during the weekend as at brunch they write names on a brown paper bag wait-list. Also, if you’re in a small group(2 – 3) be prepared to make some new breakfast buddies at a big table!

This place is great! Friendly service, good coffee and delicious food. I had the salmon and spinach and it came on amazing dark rye bread. Nice and chilled atmosphere too. I only wish we got to sit at the boat table :)

We waited in the wind for maybe five minutes to get into this extremely popular café in St Kilda on a Sunday morning. It’s obviously a place people go to the morning after the night before with Bloody Mary’s on the menu. I ordered a Virgin as it was too early for vodka for me. I find it hard to get a decent Bloody Mary in Oz, so this was nicely spiced with two(!!!) stalks of celery. Perfect. The tables are straight out of the fifties, laminex and chrome in bright, mismatched colours. Totally cute and kitschy. Do not come if you are looking for a quiet chat however. It’s intensely noisy, clattering dishes, espresso machine, bells, loud conversations. But staff are friendly and smiling though under great pressure to squeeze through the tables to deliver the orders. The place has a fabulous breakfast/brunch menu with vegan options such as tofu scramble. I ordered the vegetarian sweet potato hash with a poached egg and spinach. Oh wow. So delicious. Hints of apple and cinnamon in the hash and relish. I would come here every Sunday if I lived here. Good coffee too. Awesome.

Amazing experience here yesterday. We arrived at the café to a line out the door and decided if this was the line in an area with an abundance of cafes it must be worth the wait! The friendly waiter took our name and around 10−15mins later he apologetically took us to a shared table. A different experience, we were unsure whether to greet our new companions or pretend they weren’t there. I opted for an awkward hi and began to peruse the menu. I had seen a photo of the meatball pide on a bagel and couldn’t get it off my mind so once our coffees arrived I made this request to the waitress and she obliged to make this happen for me! My partner opted for the Galleon burger which was my second choice. Our coffees were amazing, both in taste and size! Now for the food. OMG!!! I can’t begin to describe the taste sensations that arrived to our table. Let me say we’ll be back and both of our meals are definitely recommended. All in all a great place to stop and we got out for $ 40 for two coffees and two meals! Got to be happy with that!

Been coming here for a while… The food is still solid but there tends to be a bit of a wait. Good vegetarian options as well as full meat.

Yum! This place is cool and the food is great. Our table was in the shape of a boat. How many times have you said that? The kids enjoyed porridge and eggs and soldiers(or something like that) and of course babycinos. The adults enjoyed a ver nas latte to start with. I have to add the water bottles being recycled Absolut bottles really made me like the place more. I had the bacon and egg sandwich which was delicious. My wife had the BLAT and enjoyed that. The large bowl of chips is quite large, so for 2, you can probably deal with a small. All in all, for our second meal here, it is well worth returning to and I’d go again tomorrow. Howsat?

Fairly busy on a Saturday morning. Managed to squeeze seven people in. Nice coffee and a pretty good feed. The girls love the porridge.

Love the venue & what they have done with it the décor is a bit of step bak in time but I like it, It has a nice warm cosy feeling to it. The staff were really cheerful which was refreshing, I had a salad roll which was the nicest 1 I’ve had in ages the ingredients were so fresh & the coffee wasn’t to die for but it wasn’t that bad, I’ll keep this place bookmarked for the next time I’m in the area.

Stepping into this café feels a little like stepping back in time — which is exactly what the people at Galleon Café are trying to maintain. A retro, Australian diner-esk café serving up simple food and smiles. The food options are easy, the coffee isn’t bad and the atmosphere was more hushed than a lot of cafes. Not in an awkward silent way. The retro style also means no exposed-brick-warehouse fit out, so I could hear my breaking companion perfectly while we caught up over bagels. It was nice. Breakfast was cheap and cheerful, and while I wouldn’t necessarily race here or make it my new local, I would happily stop by again when in the area.

Galleon has been on my Melburnian brunch to-do list for months, but the wait is usually so long on weekends(and my stomach is usually so grumbly) that I haven’t given it a chance. Until a recent Wednesday morning. The place was still pretty busy(considering it was a weekday) but we got a table right away. It has a real diner-y feel with the retro tables and mismatched chairs, but I think that’s part of the charm of the place. They do a solid eggs benny — perfectly poached eggs, creamy hollandaise sauce — just the way I like it. And the coffee is quite good too. The prices are also pretty reasonable. I’ll happily go back — even if it means a bit of a wait next time.

Galleon has been on my to — do list for a very long time. Today however, feeling a bit under the weather, I decided to go somewhere I didn’t have too travel to far to and Galleon popped into my mind in an instant. Pretty popular spot amongst the locals and I love that feel of it. I wanted breakfast a good breakfast so chose ‘eggs any way I wanted’ scrambled and just one, with a side of mushrooms avocado and smoked salmon. The good thing is that you get what you pay for so $ 6 for scrambled egg on multi grain toast and $ 3 for extras. Great deal. I found their coffee to be delicious too. I like how the interior is decorated with posters of perfomers playing and I like how you can grab a random business card — I grabbed a few yoga/meditation ones. I enjoyed my Galleon experience, glad I finally got to tick it off my list Its So St Kilda.

A highlight of our rugby tour to Australia! And for a café, that’s saying something. Usually we come home talking about great bars, clubs and the local sights, but the lads haven’t stopped talking about the daily trip here for breakfast. Except on the weekend days that is, when we couldn’t get a table for love nor money. It’s a popular place this. The reason we loved it so is that the hearty and very tasty breakfast offerings were the perfect foil to the sore head and needy stomachs that tend to accompany such a rugby tour. Especially when we’re staying at the very nearby hostel and attempting to drink them dry. My highlight was the bubble and squeak. I’d usually throw an extra poached egg on top for perfection, but it was tasty enough without. The coffee here was excellent, it is in Melbourne usually, but it was worth the extra dollar or so than its competition over the road. As a collective of rugby gents, we couldn’t be any more different from the usual folk who frequent here(think yoga mats under the arms and overgrown beards), but the staff looked after us and treated us like locals. Hungry, hungover and needy locals. Expect to queue for a long time on the weekend. Even for a takeaway coffee. Much love, Hammersmith and Fulham RFC.

Ok, so had the veggie burger today and it was deee-licious. Chickpea patty with olive tepenade, spinach and feta on a really nice bun. I’m not veggie, but this burger didn’t have me missing meat at all. The service was quick considering it was packed. The servers were both really friendly and they let us split our bill at the end to make it easier for the four of us work colleagues.

Even if you’re not a fan of veg or vegan breakfast, there’s another thing galleon is good for… the virgin Mary’s !! So many choices @.@ and what the hell is clamato juice? Clam and tomato? But aren’t these guys vegan? I don’t know. Whatever clamato is, they taste bloody good.

Galleon almost turned me vegan. Almost. Until I remembered how awesome bacon is… They have the most delicious dish of sautéed tofu, mushroom and spinach that comes coated in a light sweet and salty sauce. A huge mountain of the stuff, served on grainy toast is the perfect way to start the day with a pot of tea on the side. Read the papers, share a big retro table with some random people and enjoy the charming community vibe of Galleon. Big love for their extensive menu, but especially that vegan dish that makes me feel virtuous and healthy.

Another all-day, energetic breakfast café that you’ll have to wait anywhere between 5 –30 minutes for a table on weekends and it’s because the food is so damn yummy! The coffee is more often than not spot-on, and the menu is extensive, catering for vegetarians and vegans, so there is always something new to try. Coffee and food always come out hot and fast, and the prices are very reasonable, which is why I give it two thumbs up. The décor is retro, and the walls are splattered in music posters and art work for sale, which gives the café a casual and funky vibe. The service is a bit rushed, but understandable because the café is constantly flat out from open ’til close. The seats are getting a little bit ratty, and the saucers do sometimes come out grubby, but i’m certain this is the vibe these guys are going for anyway, so since the food and coffee are consistently good, I can look past these few flaws. Tip: If you have a thing for old-school celebrities, then you’ll probably come across one or two in here!
