Service was great. Location is beautiful. I actually left with a food baby and did not feel guilty at all.

It’s a chic café in a unique location. And ever since the first time I came here, I have been wanting to go again. I thought the menu items all seemed very interesting. There was so much that I wanted to try. Portions were generous, and the food compliments the coffee and hot chocolate that they have. Each table is preset with an arrangement of different homemade jams and spreads to try. It’s so much fun for your taste buds, opening each jar up to unveil a like or dislike pairing with your bread. I appreciated the look it had: rustic, artsy, very open. It’s almost like it was meant to go along the river, it’s just part of the landscape. As you sit down you can see bike riders swerving past, the whole scene gives you the sense of a healthy, easy going, one-with-Earth vibe. Kanteen is a vibrant and pleasant café, perfect to enjoy some brunch with.

Nice design, quiet place by the river. Coffee was excellent. Menu was rather limited and dull. Not having eggs florentine or raspberry custard Muesili for breakfast was disappointing. Salads were generously portioned but way, way overpriced.

Bewildered staff, no decaf coffee, refusal to accommodate allergies(no dairy on steak sandwich).

Great brekkie spot. Baked eggs are a favourite, as is the fact that man’s best(4 legged) friend can join the fun. Used to be a cash-only establishment but now takes plastic, albeit with a high minimum purchase.

Some things I like: location and food(notably, the avocado mash on cornbread, and the sticky black rice with coconut milk). Some things I like less: the inflated prices and ho-hum service. Is it worth going? Sure. But only as part of a walk or bike ride in the area — don’t go out of your way.

Great location and good looking menu. Actual food is very average, and portions are actually oversized. Coffees are nice, but no iced coffee on a hot day is kind of a fail. Won’t be pedaling back here in a hurry, might just keep on spinning by…

Kanteen is this great café that used to be an old toilet block near the parks at South Yarra. This makes it sound like it should be disgusting and smelly, but its not. They have made a really cool café out of the space they’ve got. Nice outdoor seating with different styles of tables, and really cosy indoor setting where it can be opened up or closed during different seasons. The menu is appealing with lots of yummy items like the ‘Avocado Pide’ with goats cheese where I was completely satisfied sitting outside with my food and coffee enjoying the view of the river. This is also a bit of a hot spot for bike riders who love to ride down and get a coffee and a snack before heading off again. I can see why. It was relaxing and the service was fast and friendly. Also, it was a chilly day when we went so we were offered blankets to keep us warm… extra brownie points there!

Most of the time when I am riding my bike along the beautiful Yarra Trail I am on the wrong side of the Yarra to stop here and have a fresh juice whilst soaking up the sun and atmosphere of this unique spot that Melbourne has to offer. What makes this spot so unique is not just its location, or its lovely openness but the fact that it used to be a public toilet. Don’t let that discourage you from coming here as the renovations have definitely made this place germaphobe friendly. This new little fun fact will also be a great topic of conversation.

Delicious Sunday breakfast. Were seated straight away because weather was bad and café is a little exposed to the elements. We were rugged up so it was fine but would’ve been nicer if the gas heaters were on. Had three wait staff ask to take orders which was a bit overwhelming. Think they were overstaffed due to weather. I had avocado on toast, bestie had the banana and date bread with mascarpone and berry compote and said it was unbelievable. Both meals were served up quickly and were delicious and the perfect size. Food + fresh OJ and latte came to $ 47. A bit exxy but a good breaky. Warning — they serve their coffee lukewarm here, something about not scorching the bean?

The small open air style café is located on the banks of the Yarra just before you take the first turn in the bend. Its location makes it the perfect spot to meet with groups hang with friends or reward yourself after an active morning on the trail with an amazing selection on breakfast & lunch options. Any of the breakfast pide options will not disappoint. Depending on what time you crawl out of bed, you may have to wait for a table due to early morning gym goers, groups of cyclist and those who just come to sit and soak up some sun and enjoy the fresh air. Great for a summers morning but be weary of the colder months, although they do supply blankets it can get extremely fresh especially if you’ve chose a seat outside. Kanteen is also an easy & convenient place to bring your four legged friends with ample space usually a refreshing dog bowl or two and the Yarra trail-walking track a stones throw. Kanteen offers enough to please all parties!

Dog owners are always on the look out for places they can bring their four-legged best friends to. Kanteen is one of my favourite spots on a warm, sunny day. Situated along the Yarra River but tucked away just minutes from the city — the relaxed ambience is unlike any other and makes for the best start to a good weekend. Most people who live in the South Yarra area love this little indoor and alfresco eatery which has a certain charm about it. With the river on one side, large trees providing shade and the curious chatter from native birds, there’s just something so surreal about having a meal or enjoying a coffee here. And if you own a dog and are looking for somewhere you can bring your pooch to, Kanteen is the perfect spot and is just opposite Como park — one of my favourite dog-friendly parks where your pooch can run around and socialise off the lead. But besides the overall atmosphere, Kanteen is also known for its good quality food and coffee. Its serves breakfast till 3pm so you can have that lazy sleep in and the lunch menu includes tasty sandwiches — try the roast beef or tuna pide. But it’s the specials menu that I usually choose from. They usually have one pasta, one Asian dish and a meat or fish dish and from past experience — the flavour, value for money and fresh ingredients used will satisfy even the worst critics.
