Last night was my second time at Jewel On The Bay. The first time was breakfast and all I can say is I definitely will be back for the food, the water view and the friendly welcoming staff. Breakfast in Sydney and surrounding areas is pretty basic but if you’re visiting from another country, not so basic. Turkish toast is a staple at most establishments but when you combine it with the wonderful staff and the oh so excellent view of the bay, it’s a true winner! The menu offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, milkshakes, desserts, coffees AND for added interest the place is set up so you can watch the Naan being tossed into the oven… by very happy and smiling staff in the kitchen area. I saw an older review mention stressed looking staff members and I completely disagree. The number of staff to patrons is amazing and every single one was smiling and very friendly. Just sayin’… Last night was my first time enjoying dinner here, emphasis on enjoying! The menu is quite varied and is clearly marked where mild and spicy meet. I like that so much because one of my dinner partners likes spicy and I tend to prefer mild so we all had just the right amount of heat for our palates. We ordered mains and shared them. We had prawns that were a touch spicy, butter chicken that was very mild with a tiny bit of kick and vegetable rice that was so de-lish I could have made a meal of it alone(rice also can be ordered with chicken)! And let’s not forget to try the potatoes with eggplant because that was soooo good, too. And we had 1 beef dish that was spicy… while I didn’t try that main dish, my partners in crime were very very happy!!! I can’t wait for my next visit to Jewel On The Bay… and believe me, your first time here, you’ll be asking yourself why you waited so long!!!

Not the cheapest Indian food, but very good across the board. The vegetable korma, garlic naan, and fried vegetable samosas all get high marks in my book. Even the baklava by the front counter is great — though I’m not sure why they have it at an Indian restaurant, I am glad they do! I also appreciate that they have their main dishes on display and ready to go, so you can just point to what you want for takeaway and be out the door quickly. If you are going for dinner, definitely call and make a reservation. They always seem to be totally booked.

For Indian in Sydney, this intimate setting on the shores of Rose Bay is more about location, ambience, and décor than food and service. The food is average, not to say that it is bland or tasteless, but I’ve certainly had cheaper, and tastier Indian food around Sydney. The starters of nan bread were probably the only above average meal, but the Tika Masala, was less than exciting. They do have an extensive wine list, and staff that can recommend the wine based on your meals, although they can get busy in the evenings, the staff try to pay attention, but often look stressed, and unprepared for the table service.
