I don’t know about you, but I’ve always wanted to get my face stenciled on a wall. And of that wall happens to be in Sydney’s only dedicated hip-hop bar, and I have to make my way through their entire 24-strong shot menu to do it, I am dow-diddily-own. And nah, you don’t need to do them in one night. In fact you’re not allowed, so don’t try. The best thing about this joint is the story behind it. Guy always wanted to open a small bar. Says to wife, ‘How about it?’ and she’s all like, ‘Bam.’ Cool, well what kind of bar? ‘Hip hop.’ ‘Perfect.’ Well, where? ‘Can only be Redfern. No Redfern, no bar.’ And then they made it happen. They had absolutely no bar expertise to speak of. Just a shared dream and willing hearts. And now, Hustle & Flow, because rap is music and hip hop is a lifestyle. Drop in and play some Playstation, or suck down an awesome and eclectic range of beers curated by the Tim, the main man, like Cinnamon Girl Spices Ale, brewed locally in South Sydney. Or a massive range of game-inspired cocktails(that’s game as in ‘the game’, as in hip hop, not, idk, a board game if that’s what you were thinking.) This place is as chill as it is ill, yo. That was my best attempt at talking like a baller and it still didn’t sound right. But yeah you wanna get all up in here, it’s a killer joint.

This place is fun and unlike anywhere else I’ve been in Sydney. It’s a pretty small bar, just off the Redfern train station. Definitely has a hip hop vibe and is a small skinny bar, with lounge chairs in the front and a teeny tiny dance floor in the back. They have a dj as well and throughout the night they had two girls come out in costume and dance. My favorite thing about this bar was their extensive shot menu. They have 26 shots on the menu and you actually get a sheet of paper when you walk in. You get to cross of each shot you do and if you make your way through all 26, you get your face stenciled on the wall. And the shots aren’t your typical shots. My favorite was the cookie monster, which they lit on fire so it was served warm :) If you’re looking for something different and a little more hip hop, I would definitely recommend!
