This place is one of my locals. The sangria is always strong as(like actually, they could afford to tone it down some… I don’t mind tasting the fruit!) and the tortilla chips are the perfect combo of salty and crispy. I’ve tried a variety of the mains and never been disappointed. It does get a little pricey though, so I try to visit on Sundays, when they run sangria specials, or the first Tuesday of the month, when they do $ 1 tacos. The chicken taco is my favorite, though I’m also keen to try the haloumi. Come with friends so you can try a few different things! Also, if you come in the summer, be prepared to fight for a seat outside… but it’s worth it, because the combo of sangria or margarita with local music played outside the train station is a real winner!

Beach Burrito Co used to be my favorite place to eat in Newtown. The Chimmichunga used to be one of my favorite quick meals in Sydney. However the last time I went here the menu has been revamped. They have messed with what I believed to be a great formula. The food has become more spicy, and this seems to be at the expense of flavour. The prices are a little high for the meal quality and considering the competition in Newtown. The quality of Mexican or tex-Mexican food in Sydney has never been great and it’s a shame that some guilty pleasure food like this has taken a turn for the worst. I will probably not be back.

Love this place! I’ve. Been here a few time. Friendly staff have always been helpful to us when we been there. Wife gets the burrito bowl and I’ve always had burritos. Never had an issue with either and love them. Frozen margaritas are good but only the original flavour the rest are weird.

Nice place with good food. I come here regularly with my friends and it’s great. Never disappointed. Staff are friendly and pretty chill and it has a very relaxed atmosphere with a cool interior. When in doubt go for the mucho burrito. It’s full of meaty goodness.

Rocked up on Saturday night after a few. Needed a little late night snack and possibly one last cocktail. Seems like the staff are trying to turn this place around and make it fun and chill. The hostess at the front was really nice and gave us a quick lay of the land, the manager made sure we got the goods, and the kitchen sorted out our desire for tasty snacks and churros. Will totally be back next time we’re around!

Even though you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a bad time here, the lure of a burrito so close to the station keeps me going back. Waited in line and copped all sorts of shade thrown by the sassy guy working the register. Takeaway Burrito took half an hour to make and was one big mess. 1 star for the massive hair wrapped up in the foil.

Totally awful. My husband and I used to go here a few years back and loved it. After a few years away we decided to come here again and it was beyond disappointing. Frozen margarita wasn’t actually frozen and tasted like cheap lemon and lime cordial. Tacos were so soggy they literally fell apart. The Chipotle chicken may have been in the same building as a Chipotle chili at some point, but it’s doubtful because it tasted like nothing. The pico was pretty much the worst pico I’ve had and tasted like watery, not very nice tomatoes, with no spices or herbs or you know, flavor. It did leave an enormous puddle of water in the bottom of my basket though, so yeah… Yum. It was woeful. Sorry Beach Burrito, we used to love you, but NEVERAGAIN.

We came here on Sunday afternoon as we saw sign — $ 20 Sangria. The place was very empty. When order the drink we were told that we need to order some food too to be able to drink the Sangria. So we just decided to order just chilli fries. You can’t go wrong with fries. They were actually pretty yummy. We got couple pieces of fruit in the glass with ice and a bottle of mix sangria. I must admit this was very average. I had better. We were not hungry so we didn’t order any more food at that time. I had burritos few times before from different locations at chains in Cronulla, Bondi and Coogee and the food was always average. Not sure if I will be back… I had better …

Not quite as bad as the Fortitude Valley Beach Burrito, but still pretty uninspired. The food is quite tasteless and it’s way too expensive. I just don’t understand why you’d go here when you’ve got all of the Newtown nearby. Hells, go to Guzman y Gomez instead(and I don’t advise that lightly).

Fun décor but really average food. Prawn and mango burrito was mostly rice and fell apart early on — very disappointing. I think chips and guacamole are probably the best bet here. Frozen margaritas tasted like chemicals — come on, its not that hard to make a proper margarita!

So as Mexican restaurants go, this is one the nicer ones. don’t hate me, I have a penchant for multicoloured skulls and funky artwork! The food is still lacking. Why oh why can’t a proper Mexican restaurant ever find it’s way to our shores! Speaking of shores, not sure how a beach burrito company found it’s way to Newtown as there are no beaches. Back to the topic however. I’m a huge huge huge fan of the chilli chips. Just huge. They are bloody marvellous. The guacamole is a bit special too. I’ve had the chipotle chicken burrito as well, which was nothing to really write home about. Big, squishy and I would have been happy to just eat the wrap bread thing by itself. And the margaritas comes in plastic cups. PLASTICCUPS!!! I was shocked and appalled. Who has a margarita in a plastic cup? Unless you’re walking down the strip in Vegas that is? So the hunt for the perfect Mexican in Australia continues…

Newtown may have finally reached both Hipster and Mexican food saturation point, all in one fell swoop with Beach Burrito. I love a good bit of Mexican food, and after these guys moved to town I was initially a fan. After what must be a year? I feel they’ve lost my favour due to the completely ‘also ran’ service that I seem to get each and every time I go there. I admit I’m not a fan of Hipsters. But this tops it off. I work in customer service, so it irks me no end to see people serving up, expressionless and not particularly happy to see you. One of the guys behind the counter seemed stoned. Each to their own, on their own time, but jeez man, I wouldn’t hire you. It’s not a swanky high end bar, lighten up. Gets extremely busy on weekends. You may have to queue order. Don’t bother trying to book a table either, unless you have a min of 10 people.

Had a lazy Sunday lunch here after a big night out, perfect cure for a hangover. Funky little establishment with a real Mexican feel about it, also great music and strange lighting. Had the Chips & Salsa and the Jalepeño Quesadilla as our entrees. The Chips(think CC’s and not potato chips, I incorrectly assumed the latter, haha) & Salsa were nothing special but the Jalepeño Quesadilla’s were fantastic, nice and spicy, a perfect match for the big serving of guacamole, sour cream and diced onions and tomatoes. Of note, the guacamole is amazing, best I’ve ever had and probably the highlight of my first time here. Don’t get me wrong, the food is great but the guacamole is amazing and deserves its own shoutout! For mains we orderred the Mucho Fajita Burito and the Lime Chilli Garlic Fajito Burrito. Servings are absolutely massive with a big dollop of sour cream and that fantastic guacamole. We went half half with our burritos, the Mucho has ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ in it, I’d almost say it was too much of a good thing, next time I might stick with a single-ingredient burrito, was good though! I finished off my meal(or attempted to anyway, servings are huge!) with the garlic prawn burrito which was nice and refreshing, tasty but not amazing. Without that awesome guacamole I’d just be happy with our experience, but because of it I’ll definitely be coming back for more! Also service was quick and the girl that served us was nice enough.

Great $ 3 tacos on Tuesdays — hard or soft shell and loads of tasty fillings. It gets busy so call ahead for pickup if you’re in a rush! Live band some nights and a good informal vibe with lots of energy. Lovely to sit outside in the summer and watch the people go by with a Corona or two! Overall a decent Aussie take on Mexican street food and a fun place to grab dinner.

The vibe is cool, but the food is truly average. Rice on tacos is really not OK. Even if they are cheaper than other places in Sydney. And they ALL have rice. Maybe it’s a way of cheating on real filling. Also, a mexican place that doesn’t actually make real margaritas is a let down. I was hoping for a potent, tequila, Cointreau, lime salt rimmed sensation and all they had on offer was frozen margarita slush or vodka margaritas… booo. So we go with a Coopers long neck instead. I know it’s a chain, but these guys could do with a field trip to Mexico or even California to get some hints on how this cuisine should work.

THEREVIEW I’ve tried Beach Burrito Co in Bondi a few years back so I’ll need to go back to rate that location but I do remember having a decent although not mind blowing burrito and semi hot salsa. This location of the BBC just opened in Newtown with throngs of young hipsters packing the place unconcerned with the fact that it’s in nowhere near the beach. I was hoping that the BBC Newtown would not fall far from the cactus but it really did. The boyfriend and I had the following: Chips and salsa — greasy, cold and brittle corn chips — like when you fry chips in oil that isn’t hot enough and you can feel them bend in your mouth instead of crunch. Tuna Baja tacos. Amigos… it was tinned tuna! Tuna out of a can and cold! How this tuna is in any way Baja style I don’t know! I paid 9.50 for this. I couldn’t eat it. Everything in the taco was cold and wrong. Also rice does not belong in a taco –it’s just blasphemy My boyfriend did not fair better with the prawn burrito. Not sure how BBC thinks that cold fillings belong in burritos or tacos but they don’t. Equally bad and I believe tinned pineapple was in the mix. Sure it’s in Newtown and the vibe is cool and they have a DJ but I still managed to walk out hungry — something that should never happen after being in a Mexican restaurant. Go to be seen if you must and then head to Guzman y Gomez for a better taco. Mexican food is not just tacos and burritos amigos. Set the bar higher!

I should preface this review by telling you all that I lived in California for years, specifically… in San Francisco’s Mission District in 2008, which is a traditionally Mexican neighbourhood and has some of the most amazing Mexican food EVER… EVEREVEREVER. So, walking past here one day I was REALLY excited to see this place open up with all of its Day of the Dead regalia and seemingly authentic(well, for the most part) menu. I had the fish tacos. It was nothing I couldn’t whip up at home in 10 minutes. Grilled fish, some cabbage, rice and black beans… in a single corn tortilla that fell apart after 10 seconds(hello… wrap them in TWO! Then they only fall apart after 20 seconds… plenty of time to shovel the entire thing into your mouth)… blah, blah, blah. The margaritas were pretty blah.

Our end of holidays dinner at Beach Burrito Company in Newtown was down and out dissappointing. The food was bland, the service flimsy and the place seem to have no-one in control. I know it was the last day of the New Year Public Holday(Monday, January 2) and most restaurants who have opened over this period are on their last legs with tiredness and exhaustion, but this was just BAD! One of the staff members bitch about how much of a tightass his boss is, whilst throwing a cloth in one of drinks he had assumed we had finished. The(plastic) glass had a couple of mouthfuls left of the frozen margarita and he still asked if we wanted a replacement. It’s a NAH from me!

I’ve long imagined a funky mexican place would do very well in Newtown. Something like one of my favourites — the original«Bimbo’s Bitchin’ Burritos Kitchen» in Seattle. Beach Burrito Company have done an admirable job with the décor and atmosphere, but unfortunately fall very far short on the food. Meals are particularly bland, and it seems while they have the fundamental ingredients right, they don’t have any idea of how to put them together into a tasty dish. The food is also quite overpriced for what you get(e.g. in a Burrito it’s 80% rice and wrap, a smattering of other ingredients). The meals at their Coogee outlet are only marginally better. These days(Dec ‘2011) the place is packed. It’ll be interesting to see whether they can keep ‘em coming for the decorations alone? Fortunately there are now plenty of Mexican places opening up in the area — this might force them to lift their game.
