I suggest kay chicken rice as the best dish from this restaurant. Their miso is also delicious with deep fried pork. Super cheap meals here.

Quick, simple and cheap meals in a to go box. Very convenient for people who work close by and dont have alot of time to sit down and eat or have no time to pack their lunch.

The chicken and yellow pickle in the miso katsu don was rather delicious but the rice could have been a bit better.

One of Melbourne’s cheapest and best eats! I absolutely love this place the food here is just amazing. I have been here numerous times, and it never fails. The meals are under $ 10 and for what you get, its so authentic, tasty and you just become happy with excitement that you know a place like this exist. Staff are really friendly and always rushed. Everyone knows about this little Melbourne gem, so you will see queues out the door. So fantastic to see and is always filling with people. Its got a great indoor seating and outdoor seating. Or as I do get it take away go the the state library and eat whilst enjoying people watching. Only Tip i can give is don’t get a large, Regular is fine. Large its lots and lots of food, I’ve taken so many people here, they get Large and they never finish it. Oh and there own company made drinks are amazing, aloe vera and lychee yum :)

I think Hanaichi is moreso a 3.5 star place, but its quality is not good enough to be bumped up unfortunately. It strikes me as a decent and very reliable Japanese takeaway if you’re on your lunch break or you just want a snack in the city, but to assume that the food would be gourmet is a bad choice to make. I feel your frustration Miriam S., but to think that Hanaichi’s ramen can hold up to authenticity is unfair. I recommend Ajisen Ramen, Ramen Ya, or Momotahro. Location: I love QV Square, so Hanaichi has picked a great spot with ample outdoor seating away from the hectic food court one level lower. Customer Service: They’re actually quite nice and usually Asian customer service is shit. There was a man who walked in and wasn’t really sure what he was doing(he wasn’t very well acquainted with Japanese cuisine) so he just sort of stared blankly at the menu. The woman at the counter was very happy to give him some recommendations. Food: One thing I have to praise this place for is that it has great value for what you get. If you’re ordering a large rice bowl, be prepared to pay around 8 or 9 dollars and despite it’s small and unappealing takeaway display, the meal WILL fill you up. I can generally eat a lot and was disappointed with my small portions at first glance, but then I ended up struggling to finish my meal. The food itself is nothing to write home about — after all, Hanaichi is only a cheap and fast takeaway, but it was decent. A perfect 3 stars. Combined with its quick service and cheap prices, I’m sure you can understand why I lean more to a 3.5.

TLDR: Small menu, but its inexpensive, prepared quickly and completely delicious! I’ve walked past Hanaichi many times without really noticing it, but one day a colleague took me in there and I’ve never looked back. Meals are prepared quickly, and are VERY reasonably priced. Their Large size meal will easily get you through to dinner. Their Curry with Rice(of which I consider myself a bit of a connoisseur) is tip top, I have it most times I come to Hanaichi. Whenever I’ve been there, the meal is ready within a few minutes. One piece of advice: try to arrive around 12, or be prepared to spend a bit of time hunting for somewhere to sit.

Disguised as a run of the mill, food court worthy Japanese food joint, Hanaichi is anything but. The food is fast, but made fresh. Offering a wide selection of Japanese food(no sushi) that all hit the mark. Meals are served in a take away style bowl and can been eaten in or take away. I recommend Kay’s chicken(don’t think Kay is a Japanese name but don’t care coz its so damn good. Servings are fairly large, but with the way they are served you can simply put the lid on and throw in the fridge for later.

I was actually here for the opening(Well, promoted opening) of Hanaichi, where they were handing out free drinks to passer-byers(And yes i did indulge). I must say Hanaichi was a pretty good eating experience, there’s a diverse range of meals on the menu — Tempuras, Curries, Ramen and more, there’s a heap of different dishes to try. The meals are pretty large in size and i like the idea of the cardboard plate /bowl so you can eat in and take-away if you like. The Japanese cuisine here is quite good for something whipped up quick and take-away.

After coming back from Japan, I’ve been on a mission to find the best ramen in Melbourne. Something I learnt very quickly is that there’s a lot of not so great ramens out there, and finding anything that comes close to the magnificent bowls I had in Japan won’t be easy. My order of ramen at Hanaichi failed miserably. The fact it was just called Ramen on the menu and not Charshu Ramen or Miso Ramen or anything else should have tipped me off. Then there was the fact it was served in a styrofoam bowl, a tiny one at that. Maybe I was still on a high from my trip to the land of the rising sun, and was so bitterly disappointed that this would be my first ramen back home.

If you are into authentic Japanese food; and perhaps you would like to take a bit of a break away from sushi; make Hanaichi your next destination if you can. Pick a sunny day to enjoy some seafood udon; and you will feel like a child again consuming authentic Japanese food from a largish ice cream bowl type take away dish with chopsticks. Feel like your back at school and uni in QV’s open playground like space and sit down on one of the brown wooden benches with a mate; or even if you are alone this experience is still to be enjoyed — make the most of it in the sunshine and you lose yourself in a trance like state as you are consuming these noodles full of flavour and don’t leave you feeling bloated. Their lemon tea really packs some punch. It is so strong and lemony to the touch, yet so refreshing with that home made kind of taste. There is a real distinction in taste between their lemon tea and the tea’s you can buy in the supermarket. Great to also take home and enjoy fresh and cool from the fridge. Will definitely buy lunch here again on a sunny day.
